About the Author

Michael Middleton is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Education Department at the University of New Hampshire where he researches and examines the relation of classroom and culture to adolescent identity and motivation in diverse community settings. Currently, he holds the John and H. Irene Peters Professorship in Education to support his teaching, research and service and has been a recipient of a UNH Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award. Primarily,  his teaching focuses on the preparation of educators to meet the complex demands of classroom teaching.  Early in his career, Michael was a high school mathematics teacher working with at-risk youth.  He currently lives in New Hampshire with his son.



Kevin Perks is a program and research associate with Learning Innovations at WestEd who works with schools and districts across the country to support motivation, engagement and achievement in such areas as standards-based education, literacy, and educational reform. Most recently, Kevin has been working with districts to support the implementation of the Common Core State Standards across all content areas. Kevin began his career in Ohio where he taught at a private school dedicated to addressing the needs of under-served learners with dyslexia and other learning disabilities. Since then he has taught a variety of subjects from K-12 to the university level. Kevin currently lives in Maine with his wife and daughter.

About the Author
At the time Hurricane Katrina struck, Valerie J. Gunter was an associate professor in the department of sociology at the University of New Orleans.  She spent most of the 2005-2006 academic year as a visiting associate professor at Michigan State University, from which she had received her PhD in sociology in 1994.  She has spent over 20 years researching the controversial processed by which environmental issues become registered on community and national political agendas.  Articles reporting the results form this research have been published in such journals as Social Problems, The Sociological Quarterly, The American Sociologist, Sociological Inquiry, and Rural Sociology.  She is a co-editor of Illness and the Environment: A Reader in Contested Medicine.

Erin Gibbs Van Brunschot is an Associate Professor of Sociology and Associate Dean of Social Sciences at the University of Calgary, Canada. She received her BA and MA in Sociology from the University of Calgary, and her PhD from the University of Alberta. Her research focuses on the concept of risk as it primarily applies to criminal offending and victimization. Her current research projects include an examination of how past experiences with various types of hazards influence self-protective behavior and expectations for the future, and the means by which individual and institutional efforts to enhance security work together and/or at cross-purposes. She has published articles in such journals as the International Journal of Law and Psychiatry, Canadian Review of Sociology and Anthropology, Alberta Journal of Educational Research, Women and Criminal Justice, British Journal of Criminology and has made major contributions in books such as Juvenile Delinquency by Creechan and Silverman; Crime in Canadian Society 6th edition by Silverman, Teevan, and Sacco; The Process and Structure of Crime by Meier, Kennedy, and Sacco; and the Encyclopedia of Crime and Punishment by Levinson.

About the Author
Wilbur R. (Bill) Miller received his B.A. from the University of California at Berkeley in 1966 and his Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1973. His teaching is varied and includes such courses as Civil War & Reconstruction, Gilded Age & Progressive Era, Immigration & Family History, and History of Crime & Criminal Justice in the U.S. His research interests include comparative police history, state and federal policing, representations of crime and criminal justice in popular literatures, and the general theme of authority in America. His prior publications include Cops & Bobbies: Police Authority in New York City & London, 1830-1870 (University of Chicago Press, 1977; second edition, Ohio State University Press, 1995) and Revenuers & Moonshiners: Enforcing Federal Liquor Law in the Mountain South (University of North Carolina Press, 1991). Prior to coming to SUNY-Stony Brook in 1975, he was a lecturer and assistant professor at Princeton University.

Good- But Pricey

Because I teach in the CJ field, I bought this work (with a lot of bonus points from my account). While it is certainly a very good product, I would only give it four stars for several reasons: The price - at $600 plus (even for 5 volumes and a very good index, pretty expensive). Secondly, there are articles, perhaps that really don't contribute much to a treatment of the subject i.e. CJ from an historical perspective. One major example of unnecessary articles are those dealing with every US president and developments under their administration. Simply stated, not every president had any significant CJ developments occur during their tenure in office. Not much really happened, CJ-wise under Buchanan, for example, yet there they are.

Now the positives. There are very good summaries of some very important trials that helped shaped the CJ "landscape," such as Miranda and Gideon. Also included are wonderful cross-references for nearly every article. I say "nearly every," as I certainly have not read all of them!! Overall, the articles seem to be a very good treatment and or summary of the topics they cover. The index is also quite good here. The articles are written without an obvious slant, i.e. from either the liberal (throw the system out - failed beyond repair) or the "cops can do no wrong" crowd. This is in stark contrast to Friedman's Crime & Punishment in America - where according to the author, the CJ system has not and never will, "get it right." Last but not least, it appears that the work is printed with a very durable library binding and very good quality paper - meant to last - I hope!

I hope this helps for anyone who is thinking about buying this work.

About the Author
Jan Miller Burkins is currently completing her sixth year as a full-time coach at Chase Street Elementary School, Athens, Georgia. She has worked as a language arts consultant for a regional educational service agency, a district-level literacy coordinator, a reading specialist, and an elementary classroom teacher. Her work as a consultant has taken her into elementary, middle, and high schools where she has helped school leaders examine their reading instruction, modeled lessons, and facilitated professional learning.

Burkins is also a part-time assistant professor at the University of Georgia, where she teaches classes to students pursuing graduate degrees in literacy education. She has also developed a series of courses for educators interested in becoming literacy coaches. Burkins is the author of Coaching for Balance: Meeting the Challenges of Literacy Coaching.

In 1989, Burkins received her undergraduate degree in early childhood education from Birmingham-Southern College in Birmingham, Alabama, and in 1993 her master’s from the University of Alabama. She later earned her reading specialist certification and her doctorate from the University of Kansas in 1999. Her dissertation, which was a meta-analysis of the research on phonemic awareness, was the Dissertation of the Year for the University of Kansas School of Education and one of three finalists for the International Reading Association’s Dissertation of the Year.

About the Author

Donald L. Anderson, PhD, University of Colorado, teaches organization development and organization design at the University of Denver. He is a practicing organization development consultant and has consulted internally and externally with a wide variety of organizations, including Fortune 500 corporations, small businesses, nonprofit organizations, and educational institutions. Dr. Anderson’s research interest is in discourse in organizational and institutional settings, and his studies of organizational discourse and change have been published in journals such as the Journal of Organizational Change Management, Gestion, and Journal of Business and Technical Communication. He is also the editor of the text Cases and Exercises in Organization Development & Change (2nd ed., Sage Publications, 2017). Dr. Anderson serves on the editorial board of the journal Management Communication Quarterly and he is a member of the Academy of Management.

Critical Grad Student Review

This text served as required reading when I took Dr. Anderson's Organizational Development course during the Spring 2013 quarter at the University of Denver. Despite being largely disappointed with the majority of required reading throughout my graduate study, this was by far the best and most helpful text. Dr. Anderson does a wonderful job of synthesizing what many OD, consulting, and organizational design experts say and compiling it into a solid text. The text combines solid theory with realistic case studies and even personal anecdotes. Instead of being a generic, monotone work, it is almost as if you can hear his voice and passion for the subject. Chapters and sections are very well-organized, making it easy to revisit previous sections. He also provides some solid insider advice and is quite honest about what works and what doesn't. The built-in case studies offer many chances to practice what you just learned. I highly recommend this text to be used in conjunction with Cases and Exercises in Organization Development & Change. Finally, Dr. Anderson does well to appeal to learners with a visual sense by including many easy to follow diagrams and charts.

Perhaps my only critical advice would be to include a section at the end of the text with a graphical organizer which breaks down the different types of interventions and categorizes them by individual, group, and organization.

Nice examination of organization development

This is a relatively brief introduction to the study of organization development (OD). What is organization development? The text notes that (page 2) ". . .an area of academic study and professional practice focused on making organizations better. . . ." This is an interdisciplinary field of study, drawing upon work from business, psychology, human resource management, and so on. The author notes further that (Page 3): "Organization development is the process of increasing organizational effectiveness, and facilitating personal and organizational change through the use of interventions driven by social and behavioral science knowledge."

How does this volume try to outline the study of organization development? First, it covers basic elements of the field. Second, it provides a variety of case studies.

The volume begins by discussing the nature and history and values of OD. Later subjects include the consultation process of OD practitioners, the nature of organizational change, diagnosis of organizations, intervention tactics, sustaining organizational change, and so on.

A useful introduction to the subject. . . .

About the Author
Barry Brummett is the Charles Sapp Centennial Professor in Communication and Department of Communication Studies Chair at the University of Texas at Austin. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. Brummett has authored several articles and books, including Rhetoric in Popular Culture (Sage), A Rhetoric of Style (Southern Illinois University), and Rhetorical Homologies: Form, Culture, Experience (University of Alabama). About the Author
Shannon M. Barton-Bellessa is a professor of criminology and criminal justice at Indiana State University. She earned her undergraduate degree from Kentucky Wesleyan College, her master's degree from Eastern Kentucky University, and her PhD from the University of Cincinnati. Her journal publications have been in the area of community corrections, correctional officer job satisfaction, cognitive programming, and the juvenile justice system.

Robert Hanser is the Associate Director of the School of Social Sciences and the Coordinator of the Department of Criminal Justice at the University of Louisiana at Monroe. Dr. Hanser has an extensive background in treatment provision and administration. He sits on the 4th Judicial District's Youth Services Planning Board and also serves on regional advisory councils and community boards related to juvenile services for substance abuse and mental health treatment programming. He is a National Certified Counselor, a Licensed Professional Counselor in the states of Louisiana and Texas, a Licensed Addiction Counselor, and a Certified Anger Management Therapist.

About the Author
For over two decades Dr. McKenzie-Mohr has been working to incorporate scientific knowledge on behavior change into the design and delivery of community programs. He is the founder of community-based social marketing, and his best-selling book, “Fostering Sustainable Behavior: An Introduction to Community-Based Social Marketing,” has become requisite reading for those who deliver programs to promote sustainable behavior. Dr. McKenzie-Mohr is also the author of the Fostering Sustainable Behavior website and digest. The digest links together over 7000 environmental program planners globally. Dr. McKenzie-Mohr has worked internationally with a diverse array of governmental and non-governmental agencies, assisting them in identifying the barriers to behavior change and in developing and evaluating community-based social marketing initiatives to overcome these barriers. Dr. McKenzie-Mohr has served as an advisor for Canada’s public education efforts on climate change, as the coordinator of the international organization, “Holis: The Society for a Sustainable Future,” and as a member of Canada’s National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy. He has been awarded the Canadian Psychological Association’s “Psychologists for Social Responsibility Research and Social Action Award,” and the “Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues Public Advocacy Fellowship.” He is a former Professor of Psychology at St. Thomas University in New Brunswick, Canada where he co-coordinated the Environment and Society program.

Nancy R. Lee, MBA, is president of Social Marketing Services, Inc., in Seattle, Washington, and an adjunct faculty member at the University of Washington, where she teaches social marketing and marketing in the public sector. With more than 25 years of practical marketing experience in the public and private sectors, Ms. Lee has held numerous corporate marketing positions, including vice president and director of marketing for Washington’s second-largest bank and director of marketing for the region’s Children’s Hospital and Medical Center. She conducts seminars and workshops on social marketing around the world, and has been a strategic adviser for behavior change campaigns in the areas of health, safety, the environment, and financial well-being. She has been a keynote speaker on social marketing at conferences for improved water quality, energy conservation, family planning, nutrition, recycling, teen pregnancy prevention, influencing financial behaviors, and tobacco control. She has coauthored ten books with Philip Kotler.



Wesley Schultz is Professor of Psychology at California State University, San Marcos. His expertise is in social psychology, environmental psychology, and statistics. His work in these areas has focused particularly on social influence, and effective strategies for promoting conservation behavior. He has published extensively in these areas, with recent books on the Psychology of Sustainable Development (Kluwer, 2002), Attitudes and Opinions (Erlbaum, 2005), and Social Psychology: An Applied Perspective (Prentice-Hall, 2000). Over the past 10 years, he has published more than 40 book chapters and peer-reviewed articles, and given hundreds of professional and invited presentations around the world. In addition to his academic research and teaching, Professor Schultz maintains an active schedule of training and consulting with organizations interested in developing and implementing principles of social marketing. He has worked on projects for a variety of organizations, including the Environmental Protection Agency, National Institute of General Medical Science, National Institute of Justice, Keep America Beautiful, California Integrated Waste Management Board, and Opower. His work has been featured in Business Week, the NY Times, BBC International, National Public Radio, Time Magazine, and numerous other media outlets.

Philip Kotler is the S. C. Johnson and Son Distinguished Professor International Marketing at the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University.  His most recent book, Confronting Capitalism: Real Solutions for a Troubled Economic System (2015) calls for both strong economic growth and a better sharing of the gains of economic growth. Professor Kotler is the author of over 50 books on markets and marketing.

Trained as an economist at the University of Chicago (under Nobel Laureate, Milton Friedman) and at M.I.T. (under Nobel Laureates, Paul Samuelson and Robert Solow), he has applied his economic knowledge to how markets and marketing works was an early developer of modern marketing and the emerging field of behavioural economics. As an expert on how buyers make their buying decisions, he broadened marketing to explain how buyers make their voting decisions on all kinds of issues.

A great introduction to CBSM & environmental applications

I used this book for a conservation psychology class and it was great for that purpose. It is organized and it explains community based social marketing very well along with clearly connecting it to application for multiple environmental issues. It also suggests certain strategies to more effectively induce behavior change. This book was very helpful to me.
