About the Author
Garrett J. McAuliffe is University Professor of Counselor Education at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. He received his doctorate in counseling from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, his master's degree from the University of Albany, and his bachelor's degree in literature from Queens College in New York City. McAuliffe’s work focuses on culture, constructivism, counselor education, and career, and he has written or co-written six books on topics ranging from working with troubled youth to culturally alert counseling. He has created models for cultural de-centering and health-oriented client assessment. He spent thirteen years as a community college and university counselor, and prior to that, he served as a public school teacher in New York.

Dr. Karen Eriksen, founder/CEO of the Eriksen Institute, has spent the last 35 years successfully transforming organizations by inspiring leaders to become intentional and ethical team builders; more creative and innovative problem solvers; and outstanding communicators, influencers, and conflict resolvers. She is an expert change agent and instructional designer; award winning trainer, teacher, presenter, and author; soft skills and systems expert, and accomplished leader. As a result of her trainings, supervision, instructional design, group facilitation, and coaching, leaders and employees regain their enthusiasm and effectiveness, and skillfully transform their organizations toward improved morale, increased innovation, and optimal productivity and profitability. Her primary work has been designing and conducting leadership training with follow up coaching in the health care, government, and education industries. About the Author

William A. Corsaro was the Robert H. Shaffer Class of 1967 Endowed Chair of Sociology and is currently professor emeritus in the Department of Sociology at Indiana University, Bloomington, where he won the President’s Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1988. He teaches courses on the Sociology of Childhood, Childhood in Contemporary Society, and Ethnographic Research Methods. His primary research interests are the Sociology of Childhood, Children’s Peer Cultures, the Sociology of Education, and Ethnographic Research Methods. Corsaro is the author of Friendship and Peer Culture in the Early Years (1985), “We’re Friends, Right”: Inside Kids’ Culture (2003), and I Compagni: Understanding Children's Transition from Preschool to Elementary School (2005, with Luisa Molinari). He was a Fulbright Senior Research Fellow in Bologna, Italy, from 1983-1984 and a Fulbright Senior Specialist Fellow in Trondheim, Norway in 2003. Corsaro was inaugural recipient of the Distinguished Career Award from the American Sociological Association Section on Children and Youth in 2013.

Required for Class, but would recommend to anybody interested in the topic

Not quite a "read on the beach book", but a very easy read for a class-required text. William Corsaro is the leading authority on the sociology of childhood, making this book the foundational text in the field. I'd love a more timeless cover... but the content more than makes up for it. Recommend.

About the Author

Thomas R. Chibucos received a Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology from Michigan State University in 1974. He is a Professor of Human Development and Family Studies at Bowling Green State University, where he also served as Director of the School of Family and Consumer Sciences for a decade.  Previously, he taught at Northern Illinois University in the Department of Human and Family Resources for 17 years.  At both Bowling Green and Northern Illinois, Dr. Chibucos developed and taught courses on child abuse and neglect, child and family policy, research methodology, and theory at the undergraduate and graduate levels. He is an active member of numerous professional organizations (serving, for instance, as chair of the NCFR Public Policy Committee), and his publications include Serving Children and Families Through Community-University Partnerships (Kluwer, 1999), which he co-edited with Richard M. Lerner.



 James M. White is a Professor in the School of Social Work and Family Studies at the University of British Columbia and resides with his wife and three daughters in Vancouver, Canada. His research interests include family development as well as marital interaction and communication. He is the author of Dynamics of Family Development (published in the U.S. in 1991 and translated into Japanese in 1994), as well as numerous articles that have appeared in the Journal of Family Issues, Journal of Social & Personal Relationships, Journal of Marriage and Family, and elsewhere. His authored and co-authored book chapters include a chapter with R. H. Rodgers on family development in the Sourcebook of Family Theories & Methods (1993). He has served as referee for numerous journals in family relations and public health and is an Associate Editor for the Canadian Journal of Public Health, Journal of Comparative Family Studies, and The International Encyclopedia of Family Relationships. About the Author
Kendall Zoller is president of Sierra Training Associates and provides professional learning seminars and keynotes on facilitation and presentation skills and leadership to schools, districts, universities, state agencies, and corporations throughout North America. His international research focuses on identifying nonverbal patterns in the learning environment and their influences on thinking, memory, and learning. In 2007 he introduced Nonverbal Communicative Intelligence as a framework to explain the cognitive, neurological, physiological, behavioral, and social foundations of nonverbal communication.

He has extensive experience presenting to and coaching a diverse range of audiences, including sales teams, senior managers, university faculty and staff, law enforcement leaders, administrators, and teachers. He is a contributing author to Robert Garmston’s Presenter’s Field Guide and is a Cohort I Fellow and mentor to the National Academy for Science and Mathematics Education Leadership.

Claudette Landry is the principal of an elementary school in Davis, California. She has taught all grades, from kindergarten to eighth grade, and has worked extensively with teachers in implementing effective instructional strategies and in developing collaborative communities that maximize learning and human development. She has been a leader in professional and organizational development for the past 20 years, offering workshops, trainings, and presentations at the school, district, and national levels. Claudette has facilitated dialogues and discussions with groups from many different industries and fields to generate common understandings and to develop go-ahead strategies for overcoming challenges. She keeps teams task focused and goal oriented by further developing group members’ communication, presentation, and facilitation skills.

About the Author
Paddy Scannell worked for many years at the University of Westminster (London) where he and his colleagues established, in 1975, the first undergraduate degree program in Media Studies in the UK. He is a founding editor of Media, Culture and Society which began publication in 1979 and is now issued six times yearly. He is the author of A Social History of British Broadcasting, 1922-1939 which he wrote with David Cardiff, editor of Broadcast Talk and author of Radio, Television and Modern Life. He is currently working on a trilogy. The first volume, Media and Communication, was published in June 2007. Professor Scannell is now working on the second volume, Television and the Meaning of 'Live.' The third volume, Love and Communication, is in preparation. His research interests include broadcasting history and historiography, the analysis of talk, the phenomenology of communication and culture and communication in Africa.

Ted H. Hull completed 32 years of service in public education before retiring and opening Hull Educational Consulting. He served as a mathematics teacher, K-12 mathematics coordinator, middle school principal, director of curriculum and instruction, and a project director for the Charles A. Dana Center at the University of Texas in Austin. While at the University of Texas, 2001 to 2005, he directed the research project “Transforming Schools: Moving from Low-Achieving to High Performing Learning Communities.” As part of the project, Hull worked directly with district leaders, school administrators, and teachers in Arkansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Texas to develop instructional leadership skills and implement effective mathematics instruction. Hull is a regular presenter at local, state, and national meetings. He has written numerous articles for the NCSM Newsletter, including "Understanding the Six Steps of Implementation: Engagement by an Internal or External Facilitator" (2005) and "Leadership Equity: Moving Professional Development into the Classroom" (2005), as well as "Manager to Instructional Leader" (2007) for the NCSM Journal of Mathematics Education Leadership. He has been published in the Texas Mathematics Teacher (2006), Teacher Input Into Classroom Visits: Customized Classroom Visit Form. Hull was also a contributing author for publications from the Charles A. Dana Center: Mathematics Standards in the Classroom: Resources for Grades 6–8 (2002) and Middle School Mathematics Assessments: Proportional Reasoning (2004). He is an active member of Texas Association of Supervisors of Mathematics (TASM) and served on the NCSM Board of Directors as regional director for Southern 2.

Don S. Balka, Ph.D., is a noted mathematics educator who has presented more than 2,000 workshops on the use of math manipulatives with PK-12 students at national and regional conferences of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and at in-service trainings in school districts throughout the United States and the world.

 

He is Professor Emeritus in the Mathematics Department at Saint Mary’s College, Notre Dame, Indiana. He is the author or co-author of numerous books for K-12 teachers, including Developing Algebraic Thinking with Number Tiles, Hands-On Math and Literature with Math Start, Exploring Geometry with Geofix, Working with Algebra Tiles, and Mathematics with Unifix Cubes. Balka is also a co-author on the Macmillan K-5 series, Math Connects and co-author with Ted Hull and Ruth Harbin Miles on four books published by Corwin Press.

He has served as a director of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics. In addition, he is president of TODOS: Mathematics for All and president of the School Science and Mathematics Association.



Ruth Harbin Miles coaches rural, suburban, and inner-city school mathematics teachers.  Her professional experiences include coordinating the K-12 Mathematics Teaching and Learning Program for the Olathe, Kansas, Public Schools for more than 25 years; teaching mathematics methods courses at Virginia’s Mary Baldwin College; and serving on the Board of Directors for the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematic, and both the Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the Kansas Association of Teachers of Mathematics.  Ruth is a co-author of five Corwin books including A Guide to Mathematics Coaching, A Guide to Mathematics Leadership, Visible Thinking in the K-8 Mathematics Classroom, The Common Core Mathematics Standards, and Realizing Rigor in the Mathematics Classroom.  As co-owner of Happy Mountain Learning, Ruth specializes in developing teachers’ content knowledge and strategies for engaging students to achieve high standards in mathematics.

disappointed

I was really excited to get this book. I am a big believer in making math visible whether through manipulatives, drawings, descriptions, ... Thought this book would give me many more ideas for making math visible. I ended up being disappointed. The book said things that should and should not be happening in math classrooms but gave few ways to actually make this happen...that is specific strategies for teaching with elementary students. The most valuable part were the assessment examples showing lower level and higher level questions for the same concept. Sure wish there had been more I could take back to my staff to help improve their instruction.

About the Author
Klaus Krippendorff (PhD in Communication, University of Illinois, Urbana, 1967) is Professor of Communication and Gregory Bateson Term Professor for Cybernetics, Language, and Culture at the University of Pennsylvania's Annenberg School for Communication. Besides numerous publications in journals of communication, sociological methodology, cybernetics, and system theory, he authored Information Theory, Structural Models for Qualitative Data, a Dictionary of Cybernetics, edited Communication and Control in Society, and coedited The Analysis of Communication Content and Developments and Scientific Theories and Computer Techniques.

Besides supporting various initiatives to develop content analysis techniques and continuing work on reliability measurement, Klaus Krippendorff’s current interest is fourfold: With epistemology in mind, he inquires into how language brings forth reality. As a critical scholar, he explores the conditions of entrapment and liberation. As a second-order cybernetician, he plays with recursive constructions of self and others in conversations; and as designer, he attempts to move the meaning and human use of technological artifacts into the center of design considerations, causing a redesign of design – all of them exciting projects.

The Leading Content Analysis Methods Reference

Klaus Krippendorff has updated his influential treatment of content analysis methodology (Content Analysis: An Introduction to Its Methodology). The author acknowledges that two decades have changed how content analysts work. Changes include the pervasiveness of computers, diffusion of content analysis methods to other disciplines, large text archives on the web, and increased coordination between teams of analysts. The 14 chapters are organized into three sections that present foundational material, content analysis design, and analysis and interpretation.

The author begins with the history of content analysis. He includes well-chosen examples ranging from its origins in Renaissance analysis of religious texts, through early 20th century focus on newspapers, World War II concerns with propaganda, and postwar expansion into broadcast media and advertising. Starting in the sixties, he chronicles the emerging influence of computers, electronic storage, and the web.

His review of computer-aided content analysis tools does not descend into a "shoot-out" feature comparisons, but develops a framework based on how they support the researcher. Adopting a cautionary tone about the limits of computers, Krippendorff distinguishes between simple text management and search tools, computer-aided content analysis software such as WordStat and DICTION (Campaign Talk: Why Elections Are Good for Us), and interpretive aids such as NUD*IST used by qualitative researchers. He emphasizes semantic validity--the need for computer generated solutions to be validated by informed human judgement--and proposes strategies for establishing it. He distinguishes between research projects motivated by knowledge-driven research questions, and those motivated primarily by availability of software tools. Tool-driven approaches merit extra scrutiny because of the possibility that researchers will pursue them carelessly.

The book contains some fascinating case studies. My favorite is the subtle differences in meaning of the word "rights" as used by Republicans versus Democrats (p. 266). Researchers will also appreciate his list of large electronic text archives (p. 274) and his guidance for building content dictionaries (p. 287). The review includes not only dictionary approaches, but statistical association, semantic networks, and "memetic" strategies (p.299) which trace the flow of ideas between documents--such as cascades of newsgroup messages and genealogies of plagiarized college essays. The author speculates about future innovations from computational linguistics, artificial intelligence, and the commercial marketplace.

This book is the classic methods reference on content analysis by one of the field's senior researchers. Content analysts are its natural audience, but it should be read by computer text analysts, too. Not for its perspective on software, which is limited, but for a much-needed research design perspective on the disciplined analysis of text.

About the Author

Leah E. Daigle is associate professor in the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology in the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies at Georgia State University. She received her PhD in criminal justice from the University of Cincinnati in 2005. Her most recent research has centered on repeat sexual victimization of college women and responses women use during and after being sexually victimized. Her other research interests include the development and continuation of offending and victimization across the life course. She is author of Victimology: A Text/Reader, coauthor of Criminals in the Making: Criminality Across the Life Course and Unsafe in the Ivory Tower: The Sexual Victimization of College Women, which was awarded the 2011 Outstanding Book Award by the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences. She has also published numerous peer-reviewed articles that have appeared in outlets such as Justice Quarterly, Journal of Quantitative Criminology, Journal of Inter­personal Violence, and Victims and Offenders.

Love it! plus its really interesting

Very thorough research because it provides extra readings in it that allows you to grasp a better understanding of what is being said. I enjoyed reading all the chapters, and learned plenty!
