About the Author

Evan M. Berman is Professor of Public Management and Director of Internationalization at Victoria University of Wellington, School of Government. Prior, he was the Huey McElveen Distinguished Professor at Louisiana State University. His areas of expertise are human resource management, public performance, local government, and public governance in Asia. He is past Chair of the American Society for Public Administration’s Section of Personnel and Labor Relations. He has over 125 publications and 12 books, including People Skills At Work (CRC Press, 2011), Essential Statistics for Public Managers and Policy Analysts, Third Edition (CQ Press, 2012), and a trilogy of books on Public Administration in Asia (2010, 2011, 2013, CRC Press). He has published in all major journals of the discipline, is Senior Editor of Public Performance & Management Review, a Distinguished Fulbright Scholar,  past University Chair Professor at National Chengchi University (Taipei, Taiwan), and a former policy analyst with the National Science Foundation.



James S. Bowman is a professor of public administration at the Askew School of Public Administration and Policy, Florida State University. Noted for this work in ethics and human resource management, Dr. Bowman is author of over 100 journal articles and book chapters, as well as editor of six anthologies. He is co-author of The Professional Edge: Competencies in Public Service (2nd ed., Sharpe, 2010) and Public Service Ethics: Individual and Institutional Responsibilities (CQ Press, 2015). For nearly two decades, he served as editor-in-chief of Public Integrity, a journal owned by the American Society for Public Administration. A past National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration Fellow, as well as a Kellogg Foundation Fellow, he has experience in the military, civil service, and business.



Jonathan P. West is a professor and chair of political science and director of the graduate public administration program at the University of Miami. His research interests include ethics, public administration, and human resource management. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters as well as nine books. He is co-author of Public Service Ethics: Individual and Institutional Perspectives (CQ Press, 2015) American Politics and the Environment (2nd. Ed., SUNY Press, 2015) and The Professional Edge: Competencies in Public Service (2nd ed., Sharpe, 2010.) For nearly two decades he has been managing editor of the  Public Integrity journal. He served as a Captain in the U.S. Army as a management analyst in the Office of the Surgeon General.



Montgomery Van Wart is a professor at California State University San Bernardino and a visiting professor at the University of Hong Kong. His publications include nine books and a substantial number of articles in the leading journals in his field. His most recent book is Leadership and Culture: Comparative Models of Top Civil Servant Training, with Hondeghem and Schwella (Palgrave Macmillan, 2015).  His research areas are administrative leadership, human resource management, training and development, administrative values and ethics, organization behavior, and general management. He also serves on numerous editorial boards and as the Associate Editor for Public Productivity & Management Review. As an instructor, he has spent as much time teaching and facilitating programs for executives and managers in public agencies as he has teaching graduate students. His training programs have been for individuals in all levels of government in the United States and executives and elected officials from foreign countries.

Best textbook for human resources!

Human resource management in public services was a great textbook for my college class! I have learned so much about how to be successful in human resources. Before reading this textbook, I knew only very little about management. This book helped to open my eyes on the many different tasks and duties of human resource management.

This book was really good and I enjoyed reading it

This book was really good and I enjoyed reading it! I know, right? It was easy reading and chalk full of good information, there are areas where the author can cut it short and be more concise, but it did teach me a lot and I feel like I learned something useful! Which now days in our educational system you have to teach yourself, thank God for the internet and reliable resources! The professor for this class was strict, no nonsense and I loved that she did care if we learned or not. She was not excessive and she provided great feedback with needed corrections.

About the Author
Stacy L. Mallicoat is a professor of criminal justice in the Division of Politics, Administration and Justice at California State University, Fullerton. She earned her BA in Legal Studies and Sociology, with a concentration in Crime and Deviance from Pacific Lutheran University (Tacoma, WA) in 1997 and received her PhD from the University of Colorado at Boulder in Sociology in 2003. Her primary research interests include feminist criminology and public opinion on the death penalty. She is the author of several books, including Women and Crime: The Essentials, Criminal Justice Policy, and California’s Criminal Justice System. Her work also appears in a number of journals such as Feminist Criminology, Journal of Criminal Justice, Journal of Ethnicity and Criminal Justice, and Southwestern Journal of Criminal Justice, as well as a number of edited volumes. She is an active member of the American Society of Criminology, the ASC’s Division on Women and Crime (where she currently serves as an Executive Counselor), Western Society of Criminology, and the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences.

"40 Active Learning Strategies for the Inclusive Classroom" is nothing short of a literary success. Every chapter addresses another invaluable component of special education and professional instruction. Within this text you find tips and ideas along with example strategies to help both students and teachers improve their academic environment. Simply after reading the book I felt more comfortable and better prepared to teach in an inclusive setting. Recently implemented in my classroom was the active strategy titled "Ball Toss". This active strategy not only engaged my more energetic students, but was a fun and new way to help my class review for their weekly spelling quiz. Ball Toss is just one of the many strategies just like "Round Robin", and "Puzzle Pieces" that I executed within my classroom that aided in my specialized instruction.

Great Book for Teachers

40 Active Learning Strategies for the Inclusive Classroom is chock full of ideas to get students of all learning levels to participate, work, and achieve. Drs. Casale-Giannola and Schwartz-Green have had the opportunity to use and fine tune these strategies in an inclusive classroom. It is written for easy reading and simple implementation. I have only had the book a month and I have successfully used flexible group (Chapter 3)to much success. This book is great for the beginning teacher and a great addition for any teaching library.

Best Coaching Book EVER!

I have been a literacy coach for 6 years and this book is by far the most helpful resource I have come across. The math coach and technology coach in my district are reading it with me and soon our principals will be as well. It doesn't matter what content you teach or support, the ultimate goal is student learning. This book helps you to focus on that goal. Ever wonder if your coaching is making any impact on student learning? This book offers you tools to measure your effectiveness. Wondering how to divide your time or where to focus your time/energy? The suggested coaching cycles in this book might be what you've been looking for. Ever consider small group coaching? I hadn't until I read this book.

Next steps in coaching

Diane Sweeney's book "Student-Centered Coaching" has arrived just in time for many districts across the country who are frustrated with lackluster results from the instructional coaching movement. She argues that for too long we've focused coaching efforts on teachers' practices and hoped to see results in student achievement rather than focusing on students from the get-go. She includes ways to make classroom visits more student-centered, specific data management tools and protocols for analyzing data, and a "results-based coaching tool" for coaches to measure their effectiveness with student progress. This book is a must for anyone who's a coach or principal.

What a great find!

I love this coaching book. Not only does it explain the role or purpose of a coach (which a lot of books and articles/blogs have done for me), but it guides me in creating a schedule for coaching. I understood why I was instructional coaching; what I needed was how is this done. A very easy to read book for myself and now all of the instructional coaches in my district will be reading this book for a book study!

About the Author

William E. Wagner, III, Professor of Sociology at California State University, Channel Islands, served as a member of the faculty and director of the Institute for Social and Community Research (ISCR) at CSUB prior to coming to CSU Channel Islands. His MA and PhD degrees in sociology are from the University of Illinois, Chicago. He holds two separate bachelor’s degrees, one in mathematics and the other in sociology/anthropology, both from St. Mary’s College of Maryland. His work on topics such as urban sociology, sports, homophobia, and academic status has been published in national and regional scholarly journals.



Fred Halley, Associate Professor Emeritus, SUNY-Brockport, received his bachelor’s degree in sociology and philosophy from Ashland College and his master’s and doctorate degrees from Case Western Reserve University and the University of Missouri, respectively. Since 1970, he has worked to bring both instructional and research computer applications into the undergraduate sociology curriculum. Halley has been recognized for his leadership in the instructional computing sections of the Eastern and Midwest Sociological Societies and the American Sociological Association. At Brockport, he served as a collegewide social science computing consultant and directed Brockport’s Institute for Social Science Research and the College’s Data Analysis Laboratory. Off campus, Halley directed and consulted on diverse community research projects that were used to establish urban magnet schools, evaluate a Head Start family service center, locate an expressway, and design a public transportation system for a rural county. Now residing in Rochester, New York, he plays an active role in a faith-based mentoring program for ex-offenders, and he volunteers for Micrecycle, an organization that refurbishes computers used by those on the other side of the computer divide in schools, daycares, youth centers, and other community organizations.

Jeanne Zaino, Associate Professor of Political Science, Iona College, earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and a master’s degree in survey research at the University of Connecticut, Storrs. During that time, she worked as a research assistant at the Roper Center for Public Opinion Research. She went on to earn a master’s degree and PhD in political science from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She is currently chair of the Political Science Department at Iona College in New Rochelle, New York, where she teaches courses in American government, institutions, research methods, social statistics, public opinion, scope, and methods. She and her husband, Jeff, are the proud parents of two sons, Maxim and Logan.



Earl Babbie was born in Detroit, Michigan, in 1938, but his family chose to return to Vermont 3 months later, and he grew up there and in New Hampshire. In 1956, he set off for Harvard Yard, where he spent the next 4 years learning more than he initially planned. After 3 years with the U.S. Marine Corps, mostly in Asia, he began graduate studies at the University of California, Berkeley. He received his PhD from Berkeley in 1969. He taught sociology at the University of Hawaii from 1968 through 1979, took time off from teaching and research to write full time for 8 years, and then joined the faculty at Chapman University in Southern California in 1987. Although he is the author of several research articles and monographs, he is best known for the many texts he has written, which have been widely adopted in colleges throughout the United States and the world. He also has been active in the American Sociological Association for 25 years and currently serves on the ASA’s executive committee. About the Author
Carolyn Chapman is an international educational consultant, author, and teacher who has taught in kindergarten to college classrooms. Her interactive, hands-on professional development training sessions challenge educators to use strategies that ensure success for learners of all ages. Chapman has written many books about differentiated instruction, multiple intelligences, multiple assessments, and the brain-compatible classroom. She is coauthor with Gayle Gregory of the landmark Corwin Press book Differentiated Instructional Strategies: One Size Doesn't Fit All.

Rita King has more than 20 years of teacher training experience and administrative experience as principal and director of Middle Tennessee State University's teacher training program in the laboratory school. Most recently, she was an adjunct professor in the Department of Educational Leadership at the university. She now consults internationally in the areas of multiple intelligences, practical applications of brain-based research, differentiated learning, reading and writing strategies, mathematics instruction, creating effective learning environments, and strategies for test success. About the Author

Jerrold R. Brandell, Ph.D., BCD is Distinguished Professor and Coordinator, Doctoral Concentration in Clinical Scholarship, Wayne State University School of Social Work (Detroit), where he has taught since 1992.  He has held visiting professorships at the Zurich Höchschule für Angewandte Wissenschaften (Switzerland), Lund University (Sweden) and the University of Canterbury (New Zealand), and has led workshops and lectured widely on clinical topics in the United States and abroad. A practicing child, adolescent, and adult psychotherapist, and psychoanalyst, he is the author or editor of twelve books, including Countertransference in Psychotherapy with Children and Adolescents (1992). Psychodynamic Social Work (Columbia, 2004), and Essentials of Clinical Social Work (2014). He is the (Founding) Editor of Psychoanalytic Social Work, and also serves on several other editorial boards. Recognized as a distinguished practitioner by the National Academies of Practice, he maintains a part-time practice in psychoanalysis and psychotherapy in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Bought this for a course in my MSW program. I enjoyed the class and we really used the book from front to back. This book has a lot of usuful information if you are looking to start running groups or working with clients in your practicum. I plan on keeping this text and not selling it back because of all the information that you can gain from this book. Im glad that I took the course because of this book!.

 Kimberly A. Neuendorf holds a Ph.D. from Michigan State University, which has one of the country’s top ten doctoral programs in communication. She has taught research methods and media criticism, among other courses, at Cleveland State for over a decade and has published her own research, in which she used content analysis, in numerous journal articles.

About the Author
Dr. Markward earned her both MSW and PhD from the University of Illinois-Urbana. She is currently an associate professor in the University of Missouri’s School of Social Work in Columbia where she teaches policy focused on women, poverty, and mental health, children’s mental health, and evaluation of clinical practice. Although Dr. Markward’s research and scholarly publications focus on women, children and youth, her research on women is related to violence against women. She co-edited a book entitled Reassessing Social Work Practice with Children and has contributed chapters in six books. Dr. Markward is particularly interested in gender-specific violence prevention research with females who are in the prepubescent stage of development, especially in the the ability of young females to cope with violence. Dr. Markward has practiced social work in hospital, public welfare, and school settings, primarily with low income women and children who have physical and/or mental disabilities.

Dr. Bonnie L. Yegidis currently serves as Director of the School of Social Work at the University of South Florida in Tampa and served as Dean of the School of Social Work at the University of Georgia. Dr. Yegidis is also an accomplished author, having co-written several text books and contributed to chapters in eight books, as well as having produced numerous conference papers, book reviews, and articles published in peer reviewed journals. Her areas of expertise include social work practice with families, practice with women, and international education for social work. Her book, Research Methods for Social Workers, is in its sixth edition and is widely used in schools of social work nationally, and she developed a measure to assess abuse among women. She has practiced with women abused in intimate partner relationships, conducted research with women in the Ukraine, and is a certified family mediator in the state of Florida.
