About the Author
Lee Michael Johnson is an assistant professor of criminology at the University of West Georgia. He earned a PhD in Sociology from Iowa State University, and his background includes work with behavior-disordered and delinquent youth in residential treatment. His research and writing interests are in juvenile delinquency, victimology, and criminal justice policy and practice, and he has published articles in journals such as Youth and Society, Journal of Social Psychology, Czech Sociological Review, Southwest Journal of Criminal Justice, and the International Journal of Criminal Justice Sciences. Dr. Johnson regularly teaches juvenile delinquency, victimology, family violence, race and crime, and research methods courses.

About the Author
Joseph F. Healey is Professor Emeritus of Sociology at Christopher Newport University in Virginia. He received his PhD in sociology and anthropology from the University of Virginia. An innovative and experienced teacher of numerous race and ethnicity courses, he has written articles on minority groups, the sociology of sport, social movements, and violence, and he is also the author of Statistics: A Tool for Social Research (10th ed., 2014).

An average textbook with some flaws

This is an introductory level sociology textbook. There are numerous negative reviews for previous editions of this book based on the concepts, but I would like to focus on the book itself rather than the ideas. Leaving the subject matter aside I have noticed a few issues with this textbook that I have issues with. The main text itself is somewhat dry as most textbooks tend to be but there are some more interesting perspective articles that were not written by the author. There are several small things that I think could be done better but I would like to focus on two issues that I think are particularly bad.

It seems that the author of this textbook takes a biased view on some of the theories that are discussed. Unlike hard sciences there is not a great deal of acceptance among sociologists about several of the theories that are covered in this book. For some of these theories the author clearly identifies contention among sociologists, but for other topics some things are presented strictly as facts without mentioning any alternative. As a lot of students will just be taking one required sociology class I think that this does everyone a disservice as they will be leaving their classes thinking that things are facts when they are not. These are even presented as factual answers on some quiz questions.

The other issue that I have is with the quiz questions. I think that for a concept oriented class such as one that would require this book the quizzes are very much trivia oriented rather than idea oriented. For example knowing the name of a researcher that conducted one social experiment should not be what students are trying to focus on, but that is what the quiz question was. Not the experiment itself, the result of the experiment or what could be learned from that experiment but the name of the sociologist. Useful for Jeopardy perhaps but not for learning concepts.

Used for my human relations course, was a great book. I was surprised how much I really enjoyed it. It did a great job of covering things in full honestly. I learned going to a South Dakota University many have no idea about the American Indian Movement and all of the history with it in their own state. This book talked about AIM, was a big eye opener to many of my classmates about the history in the 1970's in their of state.

bought this book for my minority studies class. the book of course was the book and i cant offer the rating based on the content of the book. The cosmetic appearance of the book was surprisingly free of your common wear and tear. The edges and binding were in perfect tact. I had to look at the book twice because of its lack of highlighting and cosmetic defects. I thought I accidentally rented the book, but in reality I actually bought it to keep it.

Very satisfied with the price and the professionalism of the vendor. Would definitely recommend to other struggling college kids on a budget

Kikanza Nuri-Robins helps people to close the gap between what they say they are and what they actually do.  Whether she is in a corporate boardroom, the fireside room of a retreat center, or a convention center auditorium, Kikanza uses her skills and insights to help people and organizations that are in transition – or ought to be.  She shares her observations and recommendations with clarity and candor, while gently encouraging them to face the difficult situations that challenge their skill sets and their values.  She leads people to this growing edge with unswerving focus, an understanding heart, and laughter that rises from the seat of her soul.

 

Since 1978, Kikanza has worked as an organizational development consultant in a variety of settings includ­ing education, health care, criminal justice, and religion, focusing on leadership development, change management, and cultural proficiency. Her clients range from school districts, to university faculty, to government offices and non-profit organizations.  The connecting thread is her passion for working with people who want to making a difference for others.

 

Kikanza studied at Occidental College, the University of Southern California, and the San Francisco Theological Seminary.  She is the author of many articles and five books, including: Cultural Proficiency and Culturally Proficient Responses to the LGBT Communities. Kikanza lives in Los Angeles where she spends her discretionary time as a textile artist.



Delores B. Lindsey, Ph.D., retired as Associate Professor of Education at Cal State San Marcos, San Marcos, CA, but did not retire from the education profession. As a former middle grades and high school teacher, assistant principal, principal, and county office of education administrator, her primary focus is developing culturally proficient leadership practices aimed at closing educational gaps. She helps educational leaders examine their organizations' policies and practices, and their individual beliefs and values about cross-cultural communication. Her message to her audiences focuses on socially just educational practices, culturally proficient leadership practices, and diversity as an asset to be nurtured. Dr. Lindsey offers keynote address and facilitates educators to develop their own inquiry and action research. Her favorite reflective question is: "Are we who we say we are?"

She is also a Training Associate for Cognitive Coachingsm and Adaptive Schoolssm. Delores and husband Randall, her favorite Sage/Corwin author, continue to co-write about the application of the four Tools of Cultural Proficiency. They enjoy working together with school districts to guide school leaders on their journey toward equity and socially just practices for all learners.

Randall B. Lindsey is emeritus professor at California State University, Los Angeles and has a practice centered on educational consulting and issues related to equity and access. Prior to higher education faculty roles, he served as a junior and senior high school history teacher, a district office administrator for school desegregation, and executive director of a non-profit corporation. All of his experiences have been in working with diverse populations and his area of study is the behavior of white people in multicultural settings. It is his belief and experience that too often white people are observers of multicultural issues rather than personally involved with them. He works with colleagues to design and implement programs for and with schools, law enforcement agencies, and community-based organizations to provide access and achievement. He and his wife and frequent co-author, Delores, are enjoying this phase of life as grandparents, as educators, and in support of just causes that extend the promises of democracy throughout society in authentic ways.

Raymond D. Terrell, EdD, served as special assistant to the dean for diversity initiatives in the School of Education and Allied Professions at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. A former secondary English teacher, elementary school principal, professor of educational administration, and dean of the School of Education at California State University, Los Angeles, he has more than 40 years of professional experience with diversity and equity issues.

About the Author
Mark E. Hill is an Associate Professor of Marketing at Montclair State University with more than 20 years of academic and professional experience. He has taught graduate and undergraduate courses in Marketing Strategy, Marketing Research, and Consumer Behavior, and has published numerous articles on subjects related to marketing thinking. In 2006, he was honored with the Best Article for 2001 award by the journal of Marketing Education Review on “Teaching and Effectiveness: Another Look,” at the 2006 Society for Marketing Advances Annual Conference. While Dr. Hill’s research provides the academic foundation of Marketing Strategy: The Thinking Involved, it is a culmination of his years of teaching, observing students, and listening to what employers are looking for from graduating marketing students that led to his interest in developing a different approach to teaching marketing. He received his Doctorate degree in Marketing from Southern Illinois University and has an MBA and a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. Prior to his academic career, Dr. Hill worked as an Aerospace Engineer for General Electric, a Technical Manager for American Airlines, and a Marketing Representative for Unison Industries. He has been a consultant to companies across the United States, providing services in the areas of marketing research and marketing strategy.

About the Author
David M. Newman earned his B.A. from San Diego State University in 1981 and his graduate degrees from the University of Washington in Seattle (M.A. 1984, PhD 1988). After a year at the University of Connecticut, David went to DePauw University in 1989 and has been there ever since. David teaches courses in Contemporary Society, Deviance, Mental Illness, Family, Social Psychology, and Research Methods. He has published numerous articles on teaching and has presented research papers on the intersection of gender and power in intimate relationships. Recently most of his scholarly activity has been devoted to writing and revising several books, including Sociology: Exploring the Architecture of Everyday Life (SAGE, 2014); Identities and Inequalities: Exploring the Intersections of Race, Class, Gender, and Sexuality (McGraw-Hill, 2012); and Families: A Sociological Perspective (McGraw-Hill, 2009). He is currently working on a book-length manuscript that examines the cultural meaning, institutional importance, and social limitations of “second chance” narratives in everyday life.

Jodi O'Brien (Ph.D., University of Washington) is Professor of Sociology at Seattle University. She teaches courses in social psychology, sexuality, inequality, and classical and contemporary theory. She writes and lectures on the cultural politics of transgressive identities and communities. Her other books include Everyday Inequalities (Basil Blackwell), Encyclopedia of Gender and Society (Pine Forge Press), Social Prisms: Reflections on Everyday Myths and Paradoxes (Pine Forge Press), and The Production of Reality: Essays and Readings on Social Interaction, Fifth Edition (Pine Forge Press).

About the Author

Curt R. Bartol was a college professor for more than 30 years, teaching a wide variety of both undergraduate and graduate courses, including Biopsychology, Criminal Behavior, Juvenile Delinquency, Introduction to Forensic Psychology, Social Psychology, and Psychology and Law. He earned his PhD in personality/social psychology from Northern Illinois University in 1972. He was instrumental in creating and launching Castleton State College’s graduate program in forensic psychology and served as its director for 6 years. As a licensed clinical psychologist, he has been a consulting police psychologist to local, municipal, state, and federal law enforcement agencies for over 25 years. In addition to editing Current Perspectives, he has written Introduction to Forensic Psychology (forthcoming in its 4th edition), Criminal Behavior: A Psychosocial Approach (now in its 10th ed.), Juvenile Delinquency and Antisocial Behavior: A Developmental Perspective (3rd ed.), Criminal and Behavioral Profiling, and Psychology and Law (4th ed.). 



Anne M. Bartol earned an MA and a PhD in criminal justice from State University of New York at Albany. She also holds an MA in journalism from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. She taught criminal justice, sociology, and journalism courses over a 20-year college teaching career and has worked as a journalist and a social worker in child and adolescent protective services In addition to editing Current Perspectives, she has co-authored Introduction to Forensic Psychology, Juvenile Delinquency, Psychology and Law, and Criminal Behavior. She has served as book review editor and managing editor of Criminal Justice and Behavior and has published articles on women and criminal justice, rural courts, and the history of forensic psychology.

Book of Articles

This book is really a collection of "current" articles. This means it does not read like a textbook which is not a problem per se it just takes a minute to realize the format is a little different. Some articles were of course better than others and the actual content varies widely. Some sections will seem outdated others are very helpful. Overall, it is a fairly good resource.

I only ordered this book because I was told I have to have it. Most of the time I find the books to be cheaper on Amazon than with the school or their book stores. Make sure you shop before using the schools to obtain the materials you need to complete your courses. This is a college book that I had to order to fulfill my class work. The book provided the information I needed to complete the entire task assigned by the facilitator. To most people there will be nothing special about this book. And I would imagine that if you are buying this book you are not doing so out of fun. Good luck in your future courses and positions. May all your classes bring you much knowledge.

Blah.

Criminal behavior analysis is my field of study. I had to have this for a course in my master's program and advise against it. While this book attempts to explain things through other authors and articles, it is extremely biased. I stopped using the book after it blatantly insulted criminal profiling by comparing it to a belief in alien abduction. Really? Try again, Bartol and Bartol.

About the Author

Jeanne H. Ballantine (far right) is University Professor of Sociology (emeriti) at Wright State University, a state university of about 17,000 students in Ohio. She has also taught at several 4-year colleges, including an “alternative” college and a traditionally Black college, and at international programs in universities abroad. She has been teaching introductory sociology for more than 30 years with a mission to introduce the uninitiated to the field and to help students see the usefulness and value in sociology. She has been active in the teaching movement, shaping curriculum, writing and presenting research on teaching, and offering workshops and consulting in regional, national, and international forums. She is a Fulbright Specialist Scholar and serves as a Departmental Resources Group consultant and evaluator. Jeanne has written several textbooks, all with the goal of reaching the student audience. As the original director of the Center for Teaching and Learning at Wright State University, she scoured the literature on student learning and served as a mentor to teachers in a wide variety of disciplines. Local, regional, and national organizations have honored her for her teaching and for her contributions to helping others become effective teachers. In 1986, the American Sociological Association’s Section on Undergraduate Education (now called the Section on Teaching and Learning in Sociology) recognized her with the Hans O. Mauksch Award for Distinguished Contributions to Teaching of Sociology. In 2004, she was honored by the American Sociological Association with its Distinguished Contributions to Teaching Award. In 2010, the North Central Sociological Association awarded her the J. Milton Yinger Award for Distinguished Career in Sociology.



Keith A. Roberts is Emeritus Professor of Sociology at Hanover College, a private liberal arts college of about 1,100 students in Indiana. He has been teaching introductory sociology for more than 30 years with a passion for active learning strategies and a focus on “deep learning” by students that transforms the way they see the world. Prior to teaching at Hanover, he taught at a 2-year regional campus of a large university. He has been active in the teaching movement, writing on teaching and serving as a consultant to sociology departments across the country in his capacity as a member of the American Sociological Association Departmental Resources Group. He has written a very popular textbook in the sociology of religion, has coauthored a book on writing in the undergraduate curriculum, and for 22 years ran an annual workshop for high school sociology teachers. He has chaired the Selection Committee for the SAGE Innovations and Professional Development Awards since the program’s inception. He has been honored for his teaching and teaching-related work at local, state, regional, and national levels. The American Sociological Association’s Section on Teaching and Learning awarded him the Hans O. Mauksch Award for Distinguished Contributions to Teaching of Sociology in 2000. He was honored with the American Sociological Association’s Distinguished Contributions to Teaching Award in 2010. In 2012, the North Central Sociological Association awarded Keith the J. Milton Yinger Award for Distinguished Career in Sociology.

Scientifically Disappointing

I find this book appallingly unscientific; many of the examples contained in the text are steeped in bias and ill-supported - either through lack of scientific backing, or misuse of scientific findings. It's disappointing to think that this text will instantiate 'social science' to so many students. I'll give it two stars only because it's an easy and interesting read, however untrustworthy.

Great book, but it's so heavy...

I have heard of heavy reading before, but really, this book takes the cake. I get the sense it would have been much better suited as a hardbound to give it the extra support that you feel it needs. By the end of reading a chapter, my wrists are sore from holding this book -- though it's a GREAT read.

This book covers a lot of current events as well as the sociology behind them.

About the Author
Michael Bamberger has been involved in development evaluation for fifty years. Beginning in Latin America where he worked in urban community development and evaluation for over a decade, he became interested in the coping strategies of low-income communities, how they were affected by and how they influenced development efforts. Most evaluation research fails to capture these survival strategies, frequently underestimating the resilience of these communities – particularly women and female-headed households. During 20 years with the World Bank he worked as monitoring and evaluation advisor for the Urban Development Department, evaluation training coordinator with the Economic Development Department and Senior Sociologist in the Gender and Development Department. After retiring from the Bank in 2001 he has worked as a development evaluation consultant with more than 10 UN agencies as well as development banks, bilateral development agencies, NGOs and foundations. Since 2001 he has been on the faculty of the International Program for Development Evaluation Training (IPDET). Jim Rugh has had 41 years of professional involvement in rural community development in Africa, Asia, and Appalachia. He has specialized in evaluation for 25 years―the past 10 years as head of Design, Monitoring and Evaluation for CARE International, a large nongovernmental organization (NGO). His particular skills include promoting strategies for enhanced capacity for evaluation throughout this worldwide organization. He is a recognized leader in evaluation among colleagues in the international NGO community, including InterAction. He has been an active member of the American Evaluation Association since 1986, currently serving on the Nominations and Election Committee. He was a founding member of the Atlanta-area Evaluation Association. He has experience in promoting community development and evaluating and facilitating self-evaluation by participants in such programs. He has provided training for and/or evaluated many different international NGOs. He brings a perspective of the “big picture,” including familiarity with a wide variety of community groups and assistance agencies in many countries, plus an eye to detail and a respect for inclusiveness and the participatory process.

Linda Mabry is a faculty member at Washington State University specializing in program evaluation, student assessment, and research and evaluation methodology. She currently serves as president of the Oregon Program Evaluation Network and on the editorial board for Studies in Educational Evaluation. She has served in a variety of leadership positions for the American Evaluation Association, including the Board of Directors, chair of the Task Force on Educational Accountability, and chair of the Theories of Evaluation topical interest group. She has also served n the Board of Trustees for the National Center for the Improvement of Educational Assessments and on the Performance Assessment Review Board of New York. She has conducted evaluations for the U.S. Department of Education, National Science Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts, the Jacob Javits Foundation, Hewlett-Packard Corporation, Ameritech Corporation, ATT-Comcast Corporation, the New York City Fund for Public Education, the Chicago Arts Partnerships in Education, the Chicago Teachers Academy of Mathematics and Science, and a variety of university, state, and school agencies. She has published in a number of scholarly journals and written several books, including Evaluation and the Postmodern Dilemma (1997) and Portfolios Plus: A Critical Guide to Performance Assessment (1999).

An excellent resource - well organized

This book was the assigned text for a doctoral course in policy evaluation in a college of education. The book lays out a thoughtful process for program evaluation, and this was easily adapted by the instructor and students to apply to the policy analysis domain.

The book is well-organized and uses easy to understand concepts and flow charts that could assist anyone charged with a program or policy evaluation.

This book will be a reference book on my shelf for many years in the future.

Bloated mess needs editing

Should you be unfortunate enough to be required to slog through this epic I have a few suggestions:
1. Read the chapter summary
2. Scan the chapter subheads throughout
3. Choose any paragraph at random
By doing so you will have gained 95% of the knowledge contained herein.
This is a bloated, repetitive mess of a book. A glorified checklist, endlessly reiterated. There are few examples given other than third-world NGO work, and these are thin on useful application to corporate or Western evaluations. Some chapters merely repeat and repackage others, with the apparent goal of seeming comprehensive. It could easily have been edited to half its current length. But that’s not how the textbook world works, is it? Weight = Import. A cleaner knife might have allowed the type size to get larger and be more legible. It is condensed, too small and unpleasant to read (a sure sign of an author resistant to cuts, a lazy editor, or an amateur designer). The boxed material is legible, but so drastically different than the main text as to be painful to encounter.

I am not making a judgment about the quality of the content. I’m a student. I don’t know whether it’s complete, skewed, or thin. I do recognize repetition for repetition’s sake though. And here it is. Avoid if possible.

About the Author
Betty J. Alford is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Secondary Education and Educational Leadership at Stephen F. Austin State University (SFASU) in Nacogdoches, Texas, in addition to serving as doctoral program coordinator and teaching in both the principal preparation and doctoral programs at the university. Since 1999, she has served as lead writer for federal and state educational partnership grants totaling over ten million dollars. She has served as project director of the East Texas Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) grant, as principal investigator for a second GEAR UP grant, as co-principal investigator for a College and Career Readiness grant, as project director for a School Leadership grant, and as project director for the Project English Language Acquisition Center of Excellence (ENLACE). In 2008, she received the SFASU Foundation Faculty Achievement Award for Research. Previous awards include the department’s Teaching Excellence Award and the SFASU Chapter Phi Delta Kappa Educator of the Year award. From 2004 to 2007, she served as a member of the Board for the National Council of Professors of Educational Administration and serves as editor of the NCPEA Yearbook for 2011. She holds a bachelor’s degree in education from The University of Texas at Austin, a master’s degree in educational supervision and counseling with certification as a school principal from SFASU. Her doctoral degree in Educational Administration was from The University of Texas in Austin. Her experiences in public school include service as a school principal, a school counselor, and an elementary, middle, and high school teacher.

Mary Catherine Niño is Associate Director for Project ENLACE, a school-university professional development partnership aimed at increasing English language learner achievement at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas. Dr. Niño was a secondary English, Social Studies, and Reading teacher for ten years in Texas before entering educational leadership. She holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in English and graduate degrees in Educational Leadership. Realizing the need for a stronger development of content teachers’ knowledge of second language acquisition processes, she worked with faculty at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas to foster this knowledge in pre-service teacher curriculum and in professional development school sites. Responding to the changing demographics of her students, Dr. Niño developed a responsive curriculum approach which incorporated student experience, interest, language needs, and content into a cohesive approach to student learning. From this work, she has developed quality professional development for pre-service and in-service teachers and principals. Dr. Niño continues to consult with area schools, model teaching in classes, working with area ESL coaches and teachers, and sharing her experiences as a content teacher integrating language development into core curriculum.
