About the Author
Dr. John Oliffe is an Associate Professor at the School of Nursing, University of British Columbia. Focusing on masculinities as they pertain to men's health and illness, his men's health research encompasses diverse issues including prostate cancer, smoking patterns in men, men's depression and suicide, and other health promotion initiatives. His studies address the tripartite of men's health research issues - empirical, methodological, and theoretical. Moreover, his contributions include applications of qualitative methods and descriptive findings as interventions addressing gender and health issues. His findings are featured in over 200 academic conferences and workshops, and 100 peer-reviewed publications.

Lorraine Greaves is a senior investigator with the British Columbia Centre of Excellence for Women’s Health, and a clinical professor in the School of Population and Public Health, Faculty of Medicine, University of British Columbia. She has a doctorate in medical sociology from Monash University and has published widely on a range of women’s health issues and the integration of gender and women’s health into program, policy, and practice. Her special areas of research interests focus on women, substance use, trauma, and violence. Her extensive research on women, gender, and tobacco use and policy has influenced national and international bodies. She has received numerous awards including an honorary doctorate from the University of Ottawa for her contributions to women’s health in Canada.

Rule One for teaching writing: Use this book as a text!

Canavor and Mierowitz do a wonderful job of orienting people to the ins and outs, ups and downs, and vital essentials for writing professionally in today's media-saturated workplace. They cover everything from Tweets and emails to blogs and proposals. The book is long enough to provide full coverage and short enough for students to actually get through in less than a typical college quarter. It's written in a very approachable style. I use this as one of my texts for a graduate course in Professional Writing, and I recommend it to one and all.

About the Author

Joseph F. Murphy is the Frank W. Mayborn Chair and associate dean at Peabody College of Education at Vanderbilt University. He has also been a faculty member at the University of Illinois and The Ohio State University, where he was the William Ray Flesher Professor of Education.

In the public schools, he has served as an administrator at the school, district, and state levels, including an appointment as the executive assistant to the chief deputy superintendent of public instruction in California. His most recent appointment was as the founding president of the Ohio Principals Leadership Academy. At the university level, he has served as department chair and associate dean.

He is past vice president of the American Educational Research Association and was the founding chair of the Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium (ISLLC). He is co-editor of the AERA Handbook on Educational Administration (1999) and editor of the National Society for the Study of Education (NSSE) yearbook, The Educational Leadership Challenge (2002).

His work is in the area of school improvement, with special emphasis on leadership and policy. He has authored or co-authored 18 books in this area and edited another 12. His most recent authored volumes include Understanding and Assessing the Charter School Movement (2002), Leadership for Literacy: Research-Based Practice, PreK-3 (2003), Connecting Teacher Leadership and School Improvement (2005), Preparing School Leaders: Defining a Research and Action Agenda (2006), and Turning Around Failing Schools: Lessons From the Organizational Sciences.

The authors compile a review of research on homeless students in the K-12 setting. I appreciate that how the book relies on research -- not assertion -- in summarizing what is known about this particular issue.

This book is not a 'how to' manual. Educators would not find a specific outline of how to address the issue within a particular school or district. However, educators would find the discussion about the complexity of the social situations useful. In addition, the review of research on policy and implementation of programming would be useful. Further, the authors provide a few guiding themes based upon the research that would be useful in figuring out how to address these issues within a local context.

This book had so much potential from the title, however the overwhelming amounts of quotes and citations seemed to be the book instead of author's own analysis. The text did not lack intellectual stimulation, but any sense of emotion, feeling, or human connection for the reader. I would return but it is already too late unfortunately.

About the Author

Jeanne H. Ballantine (far right) is University Professor of Sociology (emeriti) at Wright State University, a state university of about 17,000 students in Ohio. She has also taught at several 4-year colleges, including an “alternative” college and a traditionally Black college, and at international programs in universities abroad. She has been teaching introductory sociology for more than 30 years with a mission to introduce the uninitiated to the field and to help students see the usefulness and value in sociology. She has been active in the teaching movement, shaping curriculum, writing and presenting research on teaching, and offering workshops and consulting in regional, national, and international forums. She is a Fulbright Specialist Scholar and serves as a Departmental Resources Group consultant and evaluator. Jeanne has written several textbooks, all with the goal of reaching the student audience. As the original director of the Center for Teaching and Learning at Wright State University, she scoured the literature on student learning and served as a mentor to teachers in a wide variety of disciplines. Local, regional, and national organizations have honored her for her teaching and for her contributions to helping others become effective teachers. In 1986, the American Sociological Association’s Section on Undergraduate Education (now called the Section on Teaching and Learning in Sociology) recognized her with the Hans O. Mauksch Award for Distinguished Contributions to Teaching of Sociology. In 2004, she was honored by the American Sociological Association with its Distinguished Contributions to Teaching Award. In 2010, the North Central Sociological Association awarded her the J. Milton Yinger Award for Distinguished Career in Sociology.



Joan Z. Spade is professor emerita of sociology at The College at Brockport, State University of New York, in Brockport, New York. She received her PhD from the University of Buffalo. She has been teaching and writing in the field for more than 30 years: highlights include a semester teaching in Budapest, Hungary, as a Fulbright Scholar, and authoring articles on rape culture, meaning of work in men’s and women’s lives,  gender and family, and gender in education. She is a coauthor of Schools and Society:  A Sociological Approach to Education, coeditor of Implementing Educational Reform: Sociological Perspectives on Educational Policy, and coauthor of articles in sociol­ogy of education on stratification and grouping practices in education. Currently she is researching academic governance in higher educa­tion. She is a member of the ASA, the Eastern Sociological Society, and Sociologists for Women in Society.

About the Author
Pat Mora, a popular presenter across the country at conferences, campuses, libraries, and schools, speaks and offers workshops on literacy, creativity, leadership, the writing process, and serving diverse populations. "Sharing Bookjoy: Creative Literacy Leaders" and "ZING! Seven Creativity Practices for Educators and Students" are among her more popular themes.

The author of award-winning books of nonfiction and poetry for adults and of many children's books, Pat received honorary doctorates in letters from North Carolina State University and SUNY Buffalo and is an honorary member of the American Library Association. Among her other awards are the 2006 National Hispanic Cultural Center Literary Award, a Civitella Ranieri Fellowship, a Visiting Carruthers Chair at the University of New Mexico, a Poetry Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, and a Kellogg National Leadership Fellowship.

A former teacher, university administrator, and consultant, Pat is the founder of the family literacy initiative El día de los niños/El día de los libros, Children's Day/Book Day (Día), now housed at the American Library Association. The yearlong commitment to linking all children to books, languages, and cultures and of sharing what Pat calls "bookjoy," culminates in national celebrations in April.

Pat was named one of the "Fifty Most Inspiring Authors in the World" by Poets & Writers magazine in February 2010.

Creativity Practice...and Practice Some More

This is a book educators can justify buying for their professional library that never actually makes it to school. It inspires introspection as it explores seven "creativity practices" Mora recommends to assist in opening oneself to creativity.

She uses a number of quotes, and many of them are worthy of printing and displaying on a fridge near you.

In the first chapter, "Value your Creative Self," the ideas flow like water. One of my favorites was to reflect upon the message you've left for yourself in your space and being more deliberate about creating space in which to create that inspires rather than dampens enthusiasm for the creative process.

The second chapter, "Enjoy Quiet," made the most impact on me. Her discussion of labyrinths led me to an hour of online searching until I found the perfect finger labyrinth I could print out to have students follow and made me add a wooden finger labyrinth to my "wish list."

The chapter on "Gather Your Materials" contained such an excellent idea for a writing prompt with students ("I come from a place..." - but you've got to read the background to make this worthwhile) that it was worth reading the book just for it.

The other chapters are strong as well, and I particularly enjoyed the images of the handmade offerings of the Balinese and reflecting on how that can manifest itself in a store-bought world.

Each chapter is essentially a "letter" followed by exercise and teaching connections. They are most valuable for language arts teachers, however I believe any teacher could benefit from the ideas. Administrators, too, could learn some techniques for improving campus dynamics (a high school poet laureate? genius!).

The pro-Latino message is zealous and could be off-putting to some, so be forewarned. As a gifted education specialist, I saw many similarities between the dynamic Mora describes Latino students' experiencing and the "outsiderishness" that gifted students encounter as well. Looking at it from that lens helped me open my mind to practical ways educators can make concrete inroads in making school more open to all students, both culturally and cognitively different from the norm.

One of the most valuable things to me in any book I look at for my professional library is the references it shares to lead me other resources. I inevitably turn to the back to look for this, and Mora's book does not disappoint. In addition to the expected ("Bird by Bird"), there are other less well-known recommendations.

Overall, it's a fairly quick read with a long afterlife.

About the Author

Dr. Kenneth E. Clow is a professor of Marketing in the College of Business Administration at the University of Louisiana at Monroe. Previously, he served as the Dean for the University of North Carolina at Pembroke and as the MBA Director at Pittsburg State University. He obtained his PhD from the University of Arkansas in 1992. Dr. Clow has published over 220 articles in academic journals and proceedings and has written a number of books, including Integrated Advertising, Promotions, and Marketing Communications, 6th edition, Essentials of Marketing, 4th edition, Sports Marketing, and Marketing Management. His articles appear in journals such as Journal of Business Research, The Journal of Marketing Management, the Journal of Services Marketing, the Journal of Contemporary Business Issues, the Journal of Restaurant and Foodservices Marketing, Journal of Professional Services Marketing, Services Marketing Quarterly and The Journal of Hospitality and Leisure Marketing.



Dr. Karen E. James is a professor of Marketing and Chair of the Department of Management and Marketing at Louisiana State University Shreveport, where she holds the Joe and Abby Averett Professorship in Business. Dr. James earned both her DBA (1994) and MBA (1987) degrees from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. She also received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Purdue University in Mass Communication after completing a double major in Public Relations and Radio and Television Production. Dr. James has extensive consulting experience, including health care marketing and focus group moderation consulting. She has created numerous educational supplements for various publishers and teaches marketing research on a regular basis. Her writings have been published in the Business Communication Quarterly, The Journal of Marketing Management, Services Marketing Quarterly, the Higher Education Management and Policy Journal, and the Journal of Education for Business and Marketing Management, among others.

Allen F. Repko, PhD, is the former director of the interdisciplinary studies program in the School of Urban and Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Arlington where he developed and taught the program’s core cur­riculum for many years. Repko has written extensively on all aspects of interdisciplinary studies, has twice served as coeditor of the interdisciplinary journal Issues in Integrative Studies, and has served on the board of the Association for Interdisciplinary Studies (AIS). Though recently “retired”, he continues to write and speak at AIS conventions where he conducts annual workshops on interdisciplinary program development and assessment. A comprehensive festival of extravagant academic narcissism.

Well, the description did get one thing right: this book is comprehensive.
Unfortunately, there genuinely is not enough material to justify a book this size on the topic of interdisciplinary research.

Allow me to give an example:
Here is a list of a few of the terms that you will have the joy of getting to know if you labor through Allen Repko's comprehensive text on interdisciplinary research.

Disciplinarity
Interdisciplinarity

Conceptual interdisciplinarity
Critical interdisciplinarity

Not only do all of these terms appear before page 45, they generally have very counterintuitive meanings. If this doesn't seem a little excessive to you, perhaps you should become a professor of interdisciplinary research. Usually when I see this many unique terms at the beginning of a scholars work, it indicates to me a desperate desire to be considered legitimate by the academic community. Basically, if you have to invent a bunch of fancy words to try to validate your area of study, I wonder about your academic legitimacy.

If you still haven't made up your mind about the book, consider this other example:
Starting on page 28, six interdisciplinary critiques of the disciplines are given:

"Specialization can blind the students to the broader context."

"Specialization tends to produce tunnel vision."

"Disciplinarian sometimes fail to appreciate other disciplinary perspectives."

"Some worthwhile topics fall in the gaps between disciplines."

"Creative breakthroughs often require interdisciplinary knowledge."

"The disciplines are unable to address comprehensively complex problems."

Does anyone notice anything funny about the first four of the six critiques? I'll give you a hint: they are all the same thing. Mr. Repko just felt the need to say it four times. You know what else? The last two critiques are really only one as well. The only two real critiques that Mr. Repko has are that disciplinarians are unable to consider topics outside of their disciplines, and that disciplinarians are unable to address complex problems because of this.

Mr. Repko goes on and on and on saying the same things. He uses big words and long sentences to try and make himself sound smart. It is this kind of pompous and absurd academic circus that makes academia largely inaccessible to so many students.

Before I finish up this review let's try to look at the bright side: Chances are, that with all Mr. Repko says, there isn't much that he leaves out. Still, Mr. Repko's book is hugely inefficient at delivering the necessary information.

Chances are if you're reading this review, you don't have a choice. You are required to read this book for your interdisciplinary studies class.

A Cure for Insomnia

I was required to use this book for an interdisciplinary studies class. Fortunately, my professor is kind and we've made very little use of it so far halfway into the semester.

This book is the literary equivalent of hardtack: dry, dull, and tasteless. As other reviewers have said, the author seems to repeat himself over and over; using different phraseology but not introducing any new ideas.

While reading, one has to wonder if Repko is getting paid by the word. For example, chapter 1 is called "Defining Interdisciplinary Studies." Fine; it makes sense for that to be the introductory chapter. So how does he do it? By spending several pages breaking down the phrase "interdisciplinary studies" into his definitions of "inter," "discipline," and "studies." Please wake me when it's over.

The only reason I gave this book two stars instead of one is because when used as a reference handbook while doing an interdisciplinary research paper, it can actually show some value. But trying to read it cover-to-cover is, for all intents and purposes, the same as trying to read the tax code cover-to-cover.

Keep it if you are an interdisciplinary studies major, as it may prove helpful in the future. Otherwise, I advise you to sell it back as soon as the semester is over before the bookstore changes their minds.

So many words, so little meaning

I love interdisciplinary work; I think it is so necessary in this day and age. Unfortunately, Allen Repko's attempt at clarifying interdisciplinary process and theory is inadequate. I am typically not a harsh reviewer, but I genuinely believe this book deserves 2 stars, maybe 3. If you are not reading this for a class, do not waste your time on this book. Repko's writing style is tiresome. He repeats himself over and over again. I'm not kidding when I say that after reading more than ten chapters of this book (for a class), I learned no more than "Sometimes, disciplines are inadequate. Therefore, interdisciplinary research is important." In my honest opinion, I feel as if Allen Repko's writing style in this book is like that of a high school student trying to reach a word count. He says a lot, and uses many words, but ultimately says nothing new. The 'chapter questions' after each chapter are not thought provoking. In fact, they are a joke. They feel like a last-minute addition to an incomplete product in an effort to make this book seem more grounded than it really is. $50 is a lot of money; I recommend you save it for something more substantial.

About the Author
Wendy Murawski is an associate professor and graduate coordinator at California State University, Northridge, in the Department of Special Education. She is an experienced co-teacher (for K–12 and university, general and special education) and an accomplished presenter. She is often requested to work with state departments, districts, and schools; present keynote addresses at conferences; and provide training seminars. Murawski has won prestigious awards including the Dissertation Award from the Division of Learning Disabilities and a Publication Award from the Division of Research for the Council for Exceptional Children, and she was the 2004 California Teacher Educator of the Year. Murawski’s research in the area of co-teaching has been widely disseminated through her numerous publications. Murawski is the author of Co-Teaching in the Inclusive Classroom: Working Together to Help ALL Your Students Find Success, an extensive resource handbook on co-teaching, as well as the co-creator of the CTSS (Co-Teach Solutions System) software. Her educational consulting company, 2 TEACH LLC, was created to provide professional development specifically in the areas of inclusive education, collaboration, and co-teaching. Murawski is a dynamic speaker who utilizes humor, personal experience, and research-based methods in her seminars while keeping them in the context of practical, ready-to-use strategies for general and special educators to implement in their inclusive classrooms. Murawski holds a master’s degree in special education, an EdS in educational administration, and a PhD in special education with an emphasis in research, collaboration, and co-teaching.

Sally Spencer, Ed.D. is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Special Education at California State University, Northridge, where she teaches courses in assessment, special education teaching methods, reading instruction, and collaborative processes. Prior to that, she was a special education teacher for the Los Angeles Unified School District, where she experienced the joys and challenges of collaboration as a teacher of self-contained special education classes, as a resource specialist, and as a co-teacher in a fully-inclusive elementary school. In 2001 she was awarded Outstanding Special Educator of the year by the Southern California branch of the Council for Exceptional Children, and her heart is still in the classroom with the hundreds of students who touched her life and taught her everything she knows about special education. Sally is a presenter nationally on the subject of teaching reading to students with mild to moderate disabilities, and is published in the areas of reading instruction, collaboration and inclusion. She lives in Northridge, CA, with her husband, three dogs and six birds.

A great book for teachers! It is a rather slim book that covers a lot of topics on the special education and differentiation spectrum. I was required to read this book for one of my education courses, but I am keeping it for reference and all of the resources it lists. A must!
