About the Author

Clifton F. Conrad has been Professor of Higher Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison since 1987. He previously taught at the University of Denver (1975-1977), The College of William and Mary (1977-1981), and the University of Arizona (1981-1987)―where he also served as a Department Chair and as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. His research program is centered on college and university curriculum―at the undergraduate and graduate levels, in the liberal arts and sciences as well as in professional fields. Books that he has authored or co-authored include The Undergraduate Curriculum, A Silent Success: Master's Education in the United States, and Emblems of Quality in Higher Education: Developing and Sustaining High-Quality Programs. While he has published quantitative studies in journals such as the American Educational Research Journal and the Journal of Education Finance, the majority of his research has been fueled by qualitative approaches to inquiry―work that appears in journals ranging from Sociology of Education to the Journal of Higher Education. A former President of the Association for the Study of Higher Education, since 1980 he has been a key expert witness and consultant to the U.S. Department of Justice and the Office of Civil Rights (U.S. Department of Education) in major civil rights cases and inquiries involving race and gender in higher education in nine states. Two of these cases led to landmark decisions by the U.S. Supreme Court, including one in which his scholarship was cited approvingly.



Ronald C. Serlin is an Emeritus Professor in the Department of Educational Psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He teaches courses in nonparametric statistics and the philosophy of science and statistics. His mastery in teaching earned him a Chancellor's Distinguished Teaching Award early in his career. His expertise as a statistical consultant has led to long and fruitful collaborative efforts with colleagues in the School of Nursing and the Departments of Neurology, Art Education, and Journalism & Mass Communication, among others. Currently, he is engaged in two major lines of research. One examines the effects of violations of assumptions on known and proposed parametric and nonparametric tests, a knowledge of which helps to increase the validity of statistical conclusions. The other investigates the philosophical underpinnings of statistical hypothesis testing, an effort linking modern philosophy of science and statistical practice to delineate the role of statistics in the scientific endeavor. He has published regularly in Psychological Bulletin and Psychological Methods and in such wide-ranging journals as the Journal of the American Medical Association, the Journal of Research in Music Education, and Pain. An article he co-authored won the Annual Research Report award competition for Division D of the American Educational Research Association. He won an award for Outstanding Contributions to Nursing Education, and recently he won a School of Education Distinguished Achievement Award. He served three nonconcurrent terms as Department Chair.

About the Author
John Hollingsworth is president of DataWORKS Educational Research, a company originally created to use real data to improve student achievement. Although DataWORKS started by analyzing learning outcomes (test scores), it soon refocused towards analyzing learning inputs (classroom instructional practices).  DataWORKS now focuses mainly on providing staff development to schools on classroom instruction.  John is an active researcher and presenter and has published numerous articles in educational publications.  He spends much of his time on the road training teachers.

Dr. Silvia Ybarra, Ed.D., began her career in education as a physics and chemistry teacher at Roosevelt High School in Fresno, California.  Next, Silvia became principal of Wilson Middle School in Exeter, California, which under her leadership became a prestigious Distinguished School.  Silvia was then named assistant superintendent of Coalinga-Huron School District. Her focus progressed from helping one classroom to helping one school to helping an entire district.  Silvia is the head researcher at DataWORKS.

About the Author
Laura K. Guerrero has been at Arizona State since 1996 where she teaches undergraduate and graduate level courses on relational communication, nonverbal communication, statistics, and research methods. Her research focuses on communication in close relationships, emphasizing nonverbal messages, emotion, and the "dark” and “bright” sides of interpersonal communication. She is the co-author/co-editor of Nonverbal Communication in Close Relationships (Erlbaum), The Nonverbal Communication Reader, Third Edition (Waveland Press), Nonverbal Communication (Pearson), and the Handbook of Communication and Emotion (Academic Press).

Peter Andersen (PhD, Florida State University) is a professor at San Diego State University. The author of five books and more than 150 book chapters, research papers, and journal articles, he has received recognition as one of the 100 most published scholars in the field of communication.

Walid A. Afifi (PhD, University of Arizona) is professor in the Department of Communication at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he teaches interpersonal communication, relational communication, nonverbal communication, and social marketing. His research revolves around people’s experience of uncertainty and their decisions to seek or avoid information in relational contexts.

One of the reviewers mentioned that there aren't a lot of changes to this edition, but don't be fooled into buying an old edition for a cheaper price. Although the chapters cover the same general topics, there is a lot of new information in this book. For example, this edition includes new versions of Duck's theory of relational dissolution and Baxter's dialectics theory, as well as research on chemical attraction, intimate terrorism, antisocial maintenance behavior, just to mention three of many topics, that aren't anywhere in the 2nd edition. Plus the chapter on closeness is really different.

This is a great textbook for those who are interested in interpersonal communication. This textbook breaks down the theories and techniques we use in our day today lives. Not only that but it has a link with the textbook that is great fr studying and more articles on the content of the chapters.

The editors share a passion for waste, and experts in the field author entries on a wide range of topics, including the culture of garbage, in more than 40 different geographic regions. Entries take an interdisciplinary approach; for example, the one on kitchen appliances lists the number of children who have died by being accidentally locked in landfill refrigerators and discusses landlord appliance-upkeep requirements and the environmental consequences of CFCs. Entries include a small number of citations and provide suggestions for further reading. The writing is clear and focused, and it is appropriate for advanced students who have minimal background information on the subject. This reference work is (a) trash, (b) garbage, (c) junk, (d) detritus. Of course, the answer is (e) all of the above! This is the first encyclopedia to focus exclusively on garbology—what society throws away. It covers the usual environmental topics but with a definite archaeological, historical, and social orientation. Rather than discuss recycling and the science of waste, the work discusses their sociological implications from ancient times through the present day. Major topic areas include “Archaeology of Garbage,” “Industrial and Commercial Waste,” “Consumption and Personal Waste,” “Municipal Waste,” “Waste Collection and Disposal,” and “Sociology of Waste.” Although there is a definite focus on the U.S., including an entry for every state, the editors have given the work an international flavor by including entries on major cities, nations, and regions of the globe. All articles were contributed by scholars but are written for the general adult reader. Each entry includes a bibliography of additional readings from books, journal articles, and websites. Black-and-white illustrations accompany some articles but do not do much to enhance the text. The encyclopedia contains a glossary of terms; a short chronology of major developments in waste disposal and management; and a resource guide–bibliography. One of the most interesting features of this work is the Garbology 101 section, an almost 100-page narrative appendix written by contributing editor Rathje. In a sometimes humorous, sometimes sobering, but always idiosyncratic and engaging tone, it presents a comprehensive review of the issues surrounding consumption in today’s society. This appendix alone is almost worth the price of the encyclopedia. Unfortunately, the appendix does not appear to have been indexed, which means that many readers will miss out on the content provided by this gem. About the Author
John DeLandtsheer has served as the GATE Coordinator in the Redlands Unified School District for sixteen years. He has recently retired from his role as principal of Mariposa Elementary but continues to teach at UC Riverside and serve as the GATE Coordinator in Redlands Unified School District. He is a private consultant and trains GATE teachers and others throughout California and the west in differentiated curriculum through his company, JD Seminars. DeLandtsheer has a master's degree in school administration and has devoted over thirty-five years of his educational career to gifted students at the district, county, and state levels. He has served on the board of directors for the California Association for the Gifted and he currently in their GATE Certificate Program. He is a frequent presenter at state and national conferences.

Wonderful

Met the author, went to his GATE training. No kidding! All teachers and parents should read this book. The author talked about how environment, food and our attitudes or what we say/do as a teacher or parents can affect the achievement of all children. Worth reading. It does not just care about children's academic but also care about the character development of the children. This book is a very sincere contribution and experience of Mr. DeLanstsheer. He is truly an educator who cares about success of all students. Mr. DeLanstsheer is one of the humorous, fascinating speaker I have ever met!

Enjoyable read with great information

This is an excellent resource for teachers and gifted specialists looking to differentiate in the classroom. The book opens with a discussion on the characteristics of gifted children and the necessity of helping these children develop their gifts. From there, the book launches into a review of how the brain learns.

Different components of differentiation are presented as well as very practical ways to utilize these components in the classroom. Multiple strategies are given to help enhance learning and differentiate material including year-long themes, ways of questioning, and creativity. Throughout each chapter examples and models are presented of how to apply the material to a classroom environment. This book uses very clear language and is extremely well organized.

While being a fantastic resource for teachers and other personnel working with gifted students or even curriculum, this book is also simply an enjoyable read.

About the Author

Neil J. Salkind received his PhD from the University of Maryland in Human Development, and after teaching for 35 years at the University of Kansas, he remains as a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Psychology and Research in Education, where he continues to collaborate with colleagues and work with students. His early interests were in the area of children’s cognitive development, and after research in the areas of cognitive style and (what was then known as) hyperactivity, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of North Carolina’s Bush Center for Child and Family Policy. His work then changed direction and the focus was on child and family policy, specifically the impact of alternative forms of public support on various child and family outcomes. He has delivered more than 150 professional papers and presentations; written more than 100 trade and textbooks; and is the author of Statistics for People Who (Think They) Hate Statistics (Sage), Theories of Human Development (Sage), and Exploring Research (Prentice Hall). He has edited several encyclopedias, including the Encyclopedia of Human Development, the Encyclopedia of Measurement and Statistics, and the recently published Encyclopedia of Research Design. Very helpful BUT....

This book was great at explaining the principles behind the math. However-- THERE WERE HUGE MISTAKES!!! The formula for the correlation coefficient for example, had a misplaced parenthetical that changed the formula. As a rookie in this area I was in tears trying to figure out my homework. This was not the only error, but it certainly was the worst!!!
Otherwise, the examples make it easy to understand the concepts of statistics, and certainly made it so I was able to ace the course. I just wish it hadn't had so many errors.

At last...a book that students can follow!

This is an easy to follow, well written book that students find useful. I have used it for teaching undergraduate research and statistics and as a supplement for graduate level research. It is written on a level so that almost all students can follow it and it provides excellent examples.

Conceptually deficient
By not a natural
I used an earlier version of this text in teaching an introductory statistics class. While I laud the author for trying to introduce statistical concepts and computer software conventions in the same introductory level text, I think he tries to do too much. As a result, statistical concepts are trivialized. Students may learn to compute, but they have little understanding of the meaning of their computations.

At one time or another, I think that all of us who teach courses in statistics or research methods have been too quick to send our students to the computer without being sure that they first understand the conceptual foundations of the work we assign. It's a mistake that I've made and, in retrospect, the results were predictable: students are able to employ user-friendly software to compute a variety of measures, but they lack the ability to interpret what they've done. Furthermore if students are given a data set and asked to respond to specific questions, they have difficulty deciding which measures to use.

Retrograde though it may seem, I think computer applications should be delayed until a second course. This enables the instructor to focus on concepts in a first course. Moreover, actually solving carefully selected problems using nothing more than a pocket calculator seems to further enhance students' appreciation of the conceptual underpinnings of applied statistics and improves their ability to interpret their results.

Avoid it.

This is a required text book for one of my stats classes, as shown in the syllabus. I had no clue what's wrong with the teacher, but we'd never used it. Browsed the book once and never gave it a second look. All the content in this book can be found online. Save your money for better use.

About the Author

Rhoda M. Samkoff is a popular speaker and educational consultant, formerly a teacher in the Millburn (NJ) School System. She holds a Masters degree in Curriculum and Teaching from Teachers College. Columbia University in New York City, and is a member of Kappa Delta Pi, Honor Society in Education.

Ms. Samkoff has taught at all of the elementary school grade levels. More than seventy of her students have received honors or awards in writing competitions, or have had their work published. She organized and advised a leading elementary school Student Council that received eight national awards including a United States Congressional Certificate of Recognition.

In addition, she has mentored student teachers and new teachers, and instructed in the Education Department at Kean University in New Jersey. Her workshops and seminars focus on successful teaching techniques

Ms. Samkoff has authored numerous articles that have appeared in educational magazines and in The New York Times. The author has been the recipient of many awards and was named a Teacher of Honor in 2010 for outstanding innovations in education, writing, and student leadership.

Great book for pre-service and new teachers!

Ms. Samkoff's book contains practical tips and suggestions for the new and pre-service teacher in an easy to understand manner. I wish that this book had already been published when I was a new teacher--it would have been a road map for me during my first years. An example of the tips she offers are practical suggestions for parent-teacher conferences/back-to-school nights,how to arrange students' desks, and how to formulate clear content objectives. This really is a must-have for teachers!

About the Author
William Watson Purkey is professor emeritus of counselor education at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro and co-founder of The International Alliance for Invitational Education®. A noted author, researcher, speaker, and leader, Purkey has authored nearly 100 articles and more than a dozen books.

John J. Schmidt is professor emeritus of counselor education at East Carolina University, where he chaired the department for fourteen years. Author of more than 50 professional articles and nearly 20 books and manuals, Schmidt is a national certified counselor and a licensed professional counselor in North Carolina.

John M. Novak is professor and former chair of Graduate Studies in Education at Brock University, Canada. An invited keynote speaker on six continents, Novak is the author of numerous articles, book chapters, and ten books and monographs. He is the past president of the Society of Professors of Education.
