Review
“[This] is a highly engaging book for those preparing to become school counselors. Faced with thought-provoking cases, discussion questions and recommended readings, this book provides a practical overview of school counseling from pre-K through high school settings. Wright does an excellent job describing ASCA’s recommended best practices for school counselors, as well as highlighting other duties that may be required by building administrators, job descriptions or local school boards. His understanding of current school counseling is evident in the relevance and breadth of scenarios and real-world examples. [This book] illuminates the challenges faced in schools today. [It] is an informative introductory text or a valuable addition to a reference shelf for professional school counselors.” (Donna Dockery Counseling Today 2011-11-01)

“It seems evident to me that the author has worked in schools and has firsthand experience of the challenges facing school counselors and the varied areas in which they need knowledge and expertise. Also the text is correlated to CACREP and ASCA standards, which is essential.” (Sue A. Stickel)

“(This book is) ABSOLUTELY beneficial to students. It seems to address some of the key issues (NCLB and Parental involvement in education) missing from current school counseling textbooks.” (Delila Owens)

“I believe the text addresses the contemporary issues of today and the challenges faced by the New Professional School Counselor. I was really happy to see coverage on law and case laws, theories and techniques and individual chapters on all school levels.” (Audrey A. Lucas, Ph.D.)

“The broad perspective the author takes on types of education is a new perspective from pervious or existing works. Attaching standards to the ASCA Model is an important piece that brings a level of professionalization critical in today’s environment. Addressing all the CACREP standards also helps instructors include all important and relevant aspects to the learners. It addresses each level of school counseling which is important for programs that have only one course for school counseling. I also like the use of the term framework from which to work, leaving possibilities for school counselors to be creative in how they implement their programs.” (Carolyn W. Kern, PhD)

Believe it or not, an ENJOYABLE textbook!
By A Customer
Simply excellent. Although it's a college textbook, it's easy to read and enjoyable. I found myself nearly finished with the book before the semester was half over! As Newman intended, the book has a relaxed tone and all of the chapters are tied together with a consistent theme. I now understand sociological theories and ideas--phenomena that I never thought were relevant to everyday life.

The only book in college that I have enjoyed reading...
By Zelemont
This book is very entertaining and of course extremely educational. I had no previous knowledge of sociology but I am absolutely fascinated with it thanks to this book and a great professor.

I do have one warning about this book though. It is extremely biased towards liberal views. I was raised in a predominantly conservative area of the midwest, and my conservative friends would label me a "bleeding heart liberal" or something like that, but I still found this book to be a little bit too liberally biased for me in some parts. Newman makes it extremely obvious through his writing that he is WAY liberal, which is OK for the most part because he backs his bush bashing up with facts... but you have to have one hell of an open mind to not notice some one-sidedness in the book.

The thing is, Newman is almost always right, and I have realized by studying this book that my society brought me up with some unwarranted prejudices. It has opened my mind a lot to ideas of sexual orientation and race, but I still am bothered by his presentation of society's treatment towards the obese in Chapter 6. I just don't buy that they are all victims... He forgets to mention perhaps the reasons WHY the top 1% of obese Americans are paid less or WHY morbidly obese children have sometimes been removed from their homes due to nutritional neglect. Newman wants us to believe that these workers and parents are victims of an unfairly prejudiced society, but if a worker is less productive, should they really be paid the same? If a parent is only feeding their child pizza and fried chicken, should they not be held responsible for the serious health problems that come from malnutrition? Newman points out that a shocking percentage of Americans are obese, but doesn't bother posing these questions.

Still, It is an extremely well written book and i have enjoyed it, and that is saying a lot. I have hated every other textbook I have ever owned. I would consider reading this even if I didn't have to.

Review
“In its community-based focus and careful attention to the micro, inter-group and institutional dynamics of project centered research in and with communities, this text stands alone. I am not aware of another text that provides such an in-depth framework and rationale for community-centered research practice, as well as grounded details and guidance on the opportunities and challenges in integrating research more effectively and equitably through the different stages of the project cycle.” (C. Clare Hinrichs 2011-10-28)

'Research Methods for Community Change is a valuable text for undergraduate and graduate students alike. Readers seeking to understand new directions in social science research generally, or embark on their own community-based research will be well served by the mix of theory and practice, real-world examples, and student-friendly tone. [...] He is to be praised for offering a means for the next generation to engage in the communities in which they live, rather than remain holed up in a computer lab somewhere, trying in vain to find meaningful correlations instead of simply asking more meaningful and community-informed questions' (Johannes Wheeldon 2013-07-04)

Sociology of Organizations: Structures and Relationships is a timely and unique collection of both classic and contemporary studies of organizations. This volume sheds light on some of the most interesting changes and challenges facing organizations today: the integration of new media, the implementation of diversity and inclusion, and the promotion of sustainable workforce engagement. Lively and provocative, this textbook is theoretically rigorous, disciplinarily informed and representative of heterogeneity within organization studies.

Review
"Sociology of Organizations: Structures and Relationships is a timely and unique book. It is timely given the growing interest in sociology in the field of management and organization studies -- sparked not only by the continued success of sociologically inspired schools of thought (e.g., contingency theory and new institutionalism) but also by the rapid growth of critical management studies. The book is unique in the way it builds its theoretical/historical account through a relational rather than a formal bureaucratic approach. To me this is, quite simply, cutting edge. The centering of Mary Parker Follett in the account is inspired. Overall the book challenges current wisdom about the history of management thought and its bureaucratic roots – and this is a good thing!" (Albert J. Mills 2011-02-07)

"Sociology of Organizations is a far-reaching collection of classics and contemporary studies, insightfully organized around competing frameworks that spring to life in the capable hands of Professors Godwyn and Gittell. More comprehensive than the usual textbook, it not only builds on the past but also sheds light on some of the most pressing problems facing organizations today: new media, diversity and inclusion, and workforce engagement. This valuable book should reach a wide audience." (Rosabeth Moss Kanter 2011-02-07)

"What a great collection! By adding Follett to the classics and including contemporary organizational issues like diversity and new technology, Godwyn and Gittell provide for students and professionals a nuanced and compelling insight into organizational life. In addition, their general and section introductions wonderfully interweave a substantive and theoretical web across all these topics. Sociology of Organizations is an important book that transcends simplistic understandings of bureaucracy and individualistic rational theories of action. Its emphasis on a relational perspective highlights the role of people and their interactions in understanding organizations. Altogether a significant new look at key issues in modern society."

(Lotte Bailyn 2011-03-15)

“Sociology of Organizations: Structures and Relationships masterfully weaves together classic and current texts to bring to life the most pressing modern day issues that organizations face, from managing diversity within organizations to how the latest technologies, such as social media, are reshaping the boundaries of organizations. This extremely well thought out and unique book includes penetrating and immensely readable syntheses throughout, clarifying distinct theoretical lenses and creating a rich understanding of organizations. By bringing to the fore the relational organizational form, which traces back to Mary Parker Follett, this book provides a compelling counterpoint to purely bureaucratic analyses and thereby provides a way to understand the direction of the most innovative and cutting edge contemporary organizations. This highly engaging and original book is a must read for anyone interested in understanding modern organizations.” (Ofer Sharone 2011-04-05)

"The Sociology of Organizations by Mary Godwyn and Jody Gittell is an absolute must read for social work educators and their students because their highly integrated and stimulating text is built on the writings and teachings of one of social work's most significant and original thinkers: Mary Parker Follett." (Richard Boettcher, PhD, Professor Emeritus 2012-04-13)

About the Author

Mary Godwyn teaches in the History and Society Division at Babson College. She holds a B.A. in Philosophy from Wellesley College and a Ph.D. in Sociology from Brandeis University. She has lectured at Harvard University and taught at Brandeis University and Lasell College, where she was also the Director of the Donahue Institute for Public Values. Godwyn focuses on social theory as it applies to issues of inequality in formal and informal organizations. She studies entrepreneurship as a vehicle for the economic and political advancement of marginalized populations, especially women and minorities. She has published in journals such as Symbolic Interaction (University of California Press), Research in Social Stratification and Mobility (Elsevier), and the Journal of Small Business and Entrepreneurship. Her books include Minority Women Entrepreneurs: How Outsider Status Can Lead to Better Business Practices (2011), co-authored with Donna Stoddard, D.B.A., published by Greenleaf Publishing and Stanford University Press, and Sociology of Organizations: Structures and Relationships (2011), co-authored with Jody Hoffer Gittell, published by SAGE Publications/Pine Forge Press.

Godwyn served on the executive committee of the Critical Management Studies Division of the Academy of Management from 2008-2011, and was also the 2008 winner of the Dark Side Case Competition for her case "Hugh Connerty and Hooters: What is Successful Entrepreneurship?" Her research has been funded by the Coleman Foundation, the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, the Harold S. Geneen Charitable Trust and the Babson College Board of Research Fund. In addition to scholarship and teaching, Godwyn consults to colleges and universities about the integration of entrepreneurship and liberal arts programs.

Jody Hoffer Gittell teaches human resource management and organizational theory at Brandeis University’s Heller School for Social Policy and Management. She serves as Director of the Relational Coordination Research Collaborative, and Acting Director of the MIT Leadership Center.

Gittell’s research explores how coordination by front-line workers contributes to quality and efficiency outcomes in service settings, with a particular focus on the airline and healthcare industries. She has developed a theory of relational coordination, proposing that highly interdependent work is most effectively coordinated through relationships of shared goals, shared knowledge and mutual respect, and demonstrating how organizations can support (or undermine) relational coordination through the design of their work systems.

Gittell is the author of dozens of articles and chapters, and several books that translate her findings for practitioners. Her books include The Southwest Airlines Way: Using the Power of Relationships to Achieve High Performance (McGraw-Hill, 2003), Up in the Air: How the Airlines Can Improve Performance by Engaging Their Employees (Cornell University Press, 2009), High Performance Healthcare: Using the Power of Relationships to Achieve Quality, Efficiency and Resilience (McGraw-Hill, 2009), and most recently Sociology of Organizations: Structures and Relationships (co-authored with Mary Godwyn, Ph.D.) (SAGE, 2011).

Gittell won the Outstanding Young Scholar of the Year Award in 2004 from the Labor and Employment Relations Association, a Best Book Award for Industry Studies in 2005 from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, a Best Paper Award in 2008 from the Human Resources Division of the Academy of Management, and the Douglas McGregor Award for Best Paper of the Year in 2008 from the Journal of Applied Behavioral Science. Before joining the faculty at Brandeis University, Gittell received her PhD from the MIT Sloan School of Management and taught at the Harvard Business School.

Very relevant but extremely compact
By Saeid
Those who seek for a book in organizational theory may get disappointed by the fact that there exist few books right on this topic. This book is not an easy read especially for student (even at graduate level) without sociology background. Jody's work is focused on 'relational coordination'. I found the theory of relational coordination very useful among other theories and can be easily applied to healthcare systems (my profession) and perhaps to most of other organizations. The book is a rich source of relevant articles on organizational theory. However, there is no cascade of learning from the first to the last chapter. In other words, each chapter can be read independent of other chapters. Chapters are a constellation of several articles already published in peer-reviewed journals. Before buying it go over the list of contents and decide if most of the chapters are relevant to what you expect to read.

Review
"I found this book to extremely valuable as a college special education textbook. It is well organized, contains detailed and useful information for teachers. The sections containing firsthand accounts of people with various disabilities is very helpful. The book contains valuable information about the history of special education and current practices in the field. The Appendix at the end of the book regarding CEC Standards correlated with each chapter is useful for professors. The inclusion of teacher friendly sections in each chapter makes this a superior book for use in special education classes; these sections include "effective instructional practices", "Making inclusion work" and "suggestions for the classroom." Each chapter contains useful tables and figures filled with practical information for teachers. Finally the end of chapter has a useful summary, list of key terms, study questions and a Student Study Site for students to access online with other resources to assist and enhance student learning...I was very impressed by it." (Dr. Brian Abrams QC, CUNY )

This is a great intro text, with chapters that are broken up by real world stories and diagrams. It gives you a great overview of the Special Ed field. If you want more detail, there are entire textbooks on each topic, but if you are just getting your feet wet, this is a great text to do it with.

Encyclopedia of Diversity in Education (Sage Reference Publication)From SAGE Publications, Inc

The diversity education literature, both nationally and internationally, is broad and diffuse. Consequently, there needs to be a systematic and logical way to organize and present the state of research for students and professionals. American citizens need to understand the dynamics of their increasingly diverse communities and institutions and the global world in which we live, work, and lead. With continually evolving information on diversity policies, practices, and programs, it is important to have one place where students, scholars, teachers, and policymakers can examine and explore research, policy, and practice issues and find answers to important questions about how diversity in U.S. education―enriched with theories, research and practices in other nations―are explained and communicated, and how they affect institutional change at both the K-12 and postsecondary levels.

With about 700 signed entries with cross-references and recommended readings, the Encyclopedia of Diversity in Education (4 volumes, in both print and electronic formats) will present research and statistics, case studies, and best practices, policies, and programs at pre- and postsecondary levels. Diversity is a worldwide phenomenon, and while most of the entries in the Encyclopedia will focus on the United States, diversity issues and developments in nations around the world, including the United States, are intricately connected. Consequently, to illuminate the many aspects of diversity, this volume will contain entries from different nations in the world in order to illuminate the myriad aspects of diversity. From A-to-Z, this Encyclopedia will cover the full spectrum of diversity issues, including race, class, gender, religion, language, exceptionality, and the global dimensions of diversity as they relate to education. This four-volume reference work will be the definitive reference for diversity issues in education in the United States and the world.

From Booklist
Given the importance of diversity in education at all levels, the intensity of debates around high-profile court cases over many decades, and the increasingly diverse composition of American society, the wonder is that a reference work of this scope and depth hasn’t been produced sooner. The global range of topics found in this A–Z encyclopedia will stretch many readers’ concept of diversity. In addition to coverage of gender-equity topics, the effects of Title IX, indigenous languages, and the digital divide, examples include Campus balkanization and segregation, Intelligence testing, Bilingualism, Hmong Americans, Islam in Asian education, Puerto Rican studies, and Religious pluralism. The majority of contributors, most of them academics, are affiliated with American universities, greatly outnumbering authors from other countries. Their 700 signed articles explore multiple aspects of their subjects and analyze how issues relate to the broad subject of diversity. Standard encyclopedia features—such as cross-references; end-of-article bibliographies; a thematic table of contents, complementing the alphabetical list; and a comprehensive index—expand the articles’ information value and enhance access to the articles. Selected “Perspectives in Education” articles step outside the objective norm for encyclopedia entries. These treat issues such as “African American Students: Creating Excellence,” “Teacher Accreditation Programs,” “Christian Privilege in Schools and Society,” and “Persistence of Ethnicity.” A lengthy, selective chronology of key events and publications spans the period from the institution of China’s civil-service test in the seventh century to 2012 (ending with an odd entry describing this encyclopedia itself). This unique encyclopedia will prove its value, especially in academic libraries, in cultural studies, education, history, public policy, and other fields. --James Rettig

Review
"A trawl through this impressive work confirms that it is truly encyclopaedic in both its authoritativeness and in its comprehensiveness of topics and geographic reach...With its remarkable currency...its scholarliness, its scope and accessibility, and its wealth of references, cross-references and recommended reading, no university can afford to be without the online version" (Race Equality Teaching Reviewer Race Equality Teaching 2012-06-01)

"Well written and feature-rich (reader's guide, chronology, sidebar articles), and the only recent work of its kind, this set will work in large public libraries and is highly recommended for academic collections, especially those that support teacher training programs." (Michael F. Bemis Library Journal 2012-08-01)

The Encyclopedia of Diversity in Education is scholarly, comprehensive; and worthy of its topic. Providing both definition and background to such a complex and important area of study is no easy matter, and the success of this effort is a tribute to everyone involved. Academic libraries are the prime audience for this encyclopedia but given the interest in educational diversity in some areas of the country, there may be larger public libraries that will find this title of value.

(Tom Gilson Against the Grain 2013-01-01)

This landmark study serves both as a history of where we've been and a road map to where we need to be.

(Library Journal 2013-03-01)

The Encyclopedia of Diversity in Education should be a standard acquisition for every library and be on the shelves of scholars, researchers, professional developers and educators in general.

(Multicultural Perspectives 2013-04-01)

"...the entries in the Encyclopedia of Diversity in Education are not only informative and thought provoking, but also extend the basic parameters of diversity in multicultural education. ...Overall, the compelling articles written for the Encyclopedia by eminent scholars from around the globe affirm, in our opinion, the legitimacy of the fields of multiculturalism and multicultural education. ...It is our sincere professional belief that this par exellence work is a must-needed resource for every educational institution, governmental and non-profit agency, corporation, community advocacy organization, legislative body, and military branch in order to support our global community in continuing to learn about the vast field that is multiculturalism/multicultural education." (H. Prentice Baptise, Blanca Araujo, Ashley Ryan & Marisol Moreno Multicultural Education 2014-01-01)

Excellent Introduction
By DrDanger
Effective Crisis Communication is the best introduction to crisis communication for readers of all types. This book has a strong foundation in theory without being overly academic. Additionally, many examples and case studies are offered to highlight and reinforce the material. A must read for anyone interested communication's role during organizational crises.

Well written and clear
By Momph
The authors have taken the time to craft a book that explains theoretical concepts through the careful application of case studies. This second edition is a great expansion from the first edition. Rather than tacking on a new chapter and printing a second edition, the authors took time to update and expand each chapter with new and more relevant information. There is also a more thorough consideration of theory, and a better explanation of the overlap between crisis communication and risk communication.

Do you get lost or bored with dry theoretical concepts? This book is perfect - they use case study examples to illustrate and explain every concept.

Do you need a firm theoretical foundation supported by substantial research? This book is perfect for you, too - every case and example is clearly tied back to the discourse of renewal theory that is the framework for the book.

I would recommend this book to anyone in any organization as a method for understanding effective crisis communication. Rather than "spin" or "image restoration," the authors focus on renewal through honest and open communication. This book is as beneficial for people outside of the realm of communication and academia as it is for the most extreme communication nerd (says a self-professed comm nerd). Kudos and well done, it has been extraordinarily helpful in my research.
