About the Author
Michaela Colombo has been involved in the field of educating English language learners for nearly 20 years. She is currently an Assistant Professor in the Leadership in Schooling program at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, where she teaches courses in methods of sheltered content instruction. Prior to accepting a full-time position at the University of Massachusetts, Dr. Colombo worked for five years as Supervisor of the English Language Acquisition Program for the Methuen, Massachusetts Public Schools. Here, she drew upon her background as a bilingual education and ESL teacher to plan and implement professional development for mainstream teachers and supervise teachers of English language learners. Dr. Colombo is an active member of the Massachusetts Department of Education’s English Language Learners/Bilingual Education Advisory Council. Her dissertation, which was recognized as semi-finalist for best dissertation by the National Association of Bilingual Education, investigated the effectiveness of professional development for mainstream teachers of Latino students. Dr. Colombo has presented professional development for mainstream teachers of English language learners at national and state conferences.

Great Resource

This is a textbook that I needed for my current class, Methods for Learning a Second Language. As far as textbook goes, this one definitely offers a good bit of content for the price. It is easily affordable and I feel it is certainly worth purchasing. Each of the strategies listed, I think, would be beneficial for any ESL teacher. Although the class that utilizes this book is one to fulfill my minor requirements and I do not necessarily intend on becoming an ESL teacher, the knowledge can be applied to a wide variety of classroom settings no matter the topic.

I feel that many of the strategies would work best for younger learners so it may be lacking on assistance for older learners, but I think it is easy to tailor them to fit an older student population with a little creativity and pulling from other resources. One thing that I do like most about this textbook is that it gives a few examples of how each strategy could be implemented while giving you room to change it to suit your students' needs.

All in all, this is a great resource and definitely one you would want to hold onto if you were going to become a teacher.

About the Author
Kenneth Allan received his PhD in sociology from the University of California, Riverside (1995), and is currently professor of Sociology at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG). Before moving to UNCG, he directed the Teaching Assistant Development Program at the University of California, Riverside, and coedited Training Teaching Assistants, 2nd Edition (1997), published by the American Sociological Association. In addition to teaching classical and contemporary theory at UNCG, Allan also supervised UNCG’s sociology iSchool program, which offered online introduction to sociology classes to high school students across North Carolina, has designed several online courses for both the college and department, and has regularly taught graduate pedagogy courses. Allan’s research areas include theory, culture, and the self. He has authored several works in the area of theory, including multiple textbooks covering classical and contemporary theory, as well as The Meaning of Culture: Moving the Postmodern Critique Forward, and A Primer in Social and Sociological Theory: Toward a Sociology of Citizenship. His current projects include a social history of American individualism, a sociological analysis of consciousness and self, as well as a novel based in early 20th century American life.

About the Author

Peter Kivisto, PhD (New School for Social Research), is the Richard Swanson Professor of Social Thought and chair of sociology at Augustana College. Among his recent books are Citizenship: Discourse, Theory, and Transnational Prospects (2007, with Thomas Faist), Intersecting Inequalities (2007, with Elizabeth Hartung), Incorporating Diversity: Rethinking Assimilation in a Multicultural Age (2005), Key Ideas in Sociology (2nd ed., 2004), Multiculturalism in a Global Society (2002), and Social Theory: Roots and Branches (2nd ed., 2002). His primary scholarly and teaching interests revolve around social theory and ethnic and immigration studies. He has served as secretary-treasurer of the American Sociological Association’s Theory and International Migration Sections and is currently serving as Editor of The Sociological Quarterly.

About the Author

Craig E. Johnson (PhD University of Denver) is Professor of Leadership Studies and director of the Doctor of Business Administration program at George Fox University, Newberg, Oregon. He teaches undergraduate and undergraduate courses in leadership, ethics and management. Previously he served as chair of the university’s Department of Communication Arts. Johnson is the author of Ethics in the Workplace: Tools and Tactics for Organizational Transformation (also published by Sage) and co-author, with Michael Z. Hackman, of Leadership: A Communication Perspective. He has published research findings, instructional ideas, and book reviews in The Journal of Leadership Studies, The Journal of Leadership and Organizational Studies, The Journal of Leadership Education, Academy of Management Learning and Education, The International Leadership Journal, Communication Quarterly, Communication Reports and other journals. Johnson has led and participated in service and educational trips to Kenya, Rwanda, New Zeland, China, Brazil, and Honduras, and has held volunteer leadership posiitons in a variety of religious and nonprofit organizations.



Peter G. Northouse, Ph.D, is a professor of communication in the School of Communication at Western Michigan University. For more than 20 years, he has taught leadership, interpersonal, and organizational communication on both the undergraduate and graduate levels. In addition to publications in professional journals, he is the author of Introduction to Leadership: Concepts and Practice and coauthor of Health Communication: Strategies for Health Professionals (3rd ed.). His scholarly and curricular interests include models of leadership, leadership assessment, ethical leadership, and leadership and group dynamics. He has worked as a consultant in a variety of areas, including leadership development, leadership education, conflict management, and health communication. He holds a doctorate in speech communication from the University of Denver and a master’s and bachelor’s degree in communication education from Michigan State University.

Meeting the Ethical Challenges of Leadership: Casting Light or Shadow

I just recently completed an Ethical Leadership class..My Instructor selected this book as our textbook. I can honestly say that he could not have chosen a better book. This book really allows you to understand Ethics and Ethical Leadership. It also forced me to take an honest assessment of myself as well. When I say "honest assessment", I'm merely saying it enabled me to see if I was operating ethically in all levels of my life. I must admit there is room for improvement, which I am currently working on.

Excellent book...I refuse to sell this one, I will hold on to as a reference/guide.

Meeting the Ethical Challenges of Leadership; Casting Light or Shadows

The author isn't afraid to discuss contreversial issues - religion, evil - and calls it like it is. Easy to follow the thought process and excellent examples that are current. Used as a text in Professional and Organizational Ethics. A good read. We also used his movie review idea.

About the Author
Denise Daniels is a professor of child development at California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo, and a former associate professor of educational psychology at Northern Illinois University. She received her Ph.D. in Education and Developmental Studies from UCLA in 1992. She draws from nearly 20 years of experience teaching educators and other child professionals at undergraduate and graduate levels. Denise’s research focuses on children’s adjustment and motivation to learn in school, and the development of children’s and teachers’ psychological understandings and beliefs about education. She is involved in a variety of community and state endeavors to promote high quality early educational practices.

About the Author

Pamela Schram has published on such topics as female offenders, especially those women involved in violent offenses as well women in prison. Her research interests also include examining treatment effects on gang and non-gang members. She is currently focusing on issues pertaining to elderly prisoners. Dr. Schram has been involved in various research projects that have primarily focused on evaluating treatment effectiveness such as juvenile diversion options and programs for at-risk youths. She has published three books, four book chapters, and over 20 scholarly papers. Dr. Schram received her Ph.D. from Michigan State University. She is currently the Associate Dean of the College of Social and Behavior Sciences at California State University, San Bernardino.



Stephen G. Tibbetts, currently a Professor at California State University, San Bernardino, has been pursuing an understanding of criminal offending for over the past two decades. He has attempted to discover the extent to which individuals’ inherent dispositions and attitudinal traits contribute to their offending decisions, especially in relation to other factors, such as demographic, developmental, and situational factors. Dr. Tibbetts’ research has included work on the differences between men and women in their decisions to commit deviant behavior, as well as their perceptions of risk and consequences of getting caught. His additional research interests include the effects of perinatal disorders as an influence in future criminality, the etiology of white-collar crime, and gang intervention.  Dr. Tibbetts has published nine books and more than 50 scholarly papers examining various issues in criminology. He received the 2011 Outstanding Professor Award at CSU, San Bernardino. He previously worked extensively as an Officer of the Court in providing recommendations for dispositions of numerous juvenile court cases from 1997 to 2008.

Susan Fitzell, M. Ed has been touching lives in public schools and beyond since 1980. She has over two decades of experience identifying and meeting the needs of youth with special needs, behavioral and anger management issues, and students who experience bullying. Susan's work focuses on building caring, inclusive school communities and helping students and teachers succeed in the inclusive classroom.

Susan is a dynamic, nationally recognized presenter and educational consultant specializing in special education & Response to Intervention topics, co-teaching, bullying prevention, and adolescent anger management. Awesome Resource

I ordered this text after attending a conference with Susan Fitzell. This book is highly organized for easy use with chapters on specific areas like writing, reading, and math. Each chapter then offers interventions and strategies to meet the tiers of RTI (focused on academic). The initial chapter also explains RTI for those of us still needing a refresher from time to time. I am a special ed teacher and also co-teach in the gen ed classrooms at the high school level. The book reaffirms some strategies I already use, but is also filled with other great ideas that are EASY to implement! Our gen ed staff have been equally as excited about the contents as many strategies are ones we all know about, but have forgotten to use for a long time! It's a must buy in my opinion!!

Great resource for secondary teachers!

This book provides sound strategies for teachers working in the middle and high school level who are interested in implementing Tier 1 and Tier 2 strategies in the classroom. Please note that if you are looking for information regarding framework for Response to Intervention, this is not the book for you. This book provides countless strategies that can be done as whole class interventions in five to ten minutes of class time. If you spend only a brief amount of time combing this book, you will be able to immediately implement strategies in your classroom.

For administrators... This book offers quick ideas that teachers are likely to implement in the classroom as they typically take under five minutes. Many strategies can be "bell work" as teachers are taking attendance. Many strategies also focus on vocabulary which can help increase standardized test scores.

Overall, a great resource for all teachers working at the secondary level!

About the Author
Joseph F. Healey is Professor Emeritus of Sociology at Christopher Newport University in Virginia. He received his PhD in sociology and anthropology from the University of Virginia. An innovative and experienced teacher of numerous race and ethnicity courses, he has written articles on minority groups, the sociology of sport, social movements, and violence, and he is also the author of Statistics: A Tool for Social Research (10th ed., 2014).

This text is simply awe-inspiring. It is an all-inclusive text for teaching the history of race and race relations in the United States. It explains where we are today in theoretical terms, providing fascinating points of discussion. The text is extremely well organized and students love it.

About the Author

Allan G. Osborne, Jr. is the retired principal of the Snug Harbor Community School in Quincy, Massachusetts, a nationally recognized Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. During his 34 years in public education, he served as a special education teacher, a director of special education, an assistant principal, and a principal. He has also served as an adjunct professor of special education and education law at several colleges, including Bridgewater State University and American International University.

Osborne earned an EdD in educational leadership from Boston College and an MEd in special education from Fitchburg State College (now Fitchburg State University) in Massachusetts. He received a BA in psychology from the University of Massachusetts.

Osborne has authored or coauthored numerous peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, monographs, and textbooks on legal issues in education, along with textbooks on other aspects of education. Although he writes and presents in several areas of educational law, he specializes in legal and policy issues in special education. He is the coauthor, with Charles J. Russo, of five texts published by Corwin, a SAGE company.

A past president of the Education Law Association (ELA), Osborne has been an attendee and presenter at most ELA conferences since 1991. He has also written a chapter now titled "Students With Disabilities" for the Yearbook of Education Law, published by ELA, since 1990. He is on the editorial advisory committee of West’s Education Law Reporter and is coeditor of the "Education Law Into Practice" section of that journal, which is sponsored by ELA. He is also on the editorial boards of several other education journals.

In recognition of his contributions to the field of education law, Osborne was presented with the McGhehey Award by ELA in 2008, the highest award given by the organization. He is also the recipient of the City of Quincy Human Rights Award, the Financial Executives Institute of Massachusetts Principals Award, the Junior Achievement of Massachusetts Principals Award, and several community service awards.



Charles J. Russo, JD, EdD, is the Joseph Panzer Chair in Education in the School of Education and Allied Professions and adjunct professor in the School of Law at the University of Dayton. He was the 1998–1999 president of the Education Law Association and 2002 recipient of its McGhehey (Achievement) Award. He has authored or coauthored more than 200 articles in peer-reviewed journals; has authored, coauthored, edited, or coedited 40 books; and has in excess of 800 publications. Russo also speaks extensively on issues in education law in the United States and abroad.

Along with having spoken in 33 states and 25 nations on 6 continents, Russo has taught summer courses in England, Spain, and Thailand; he also has served as a visiting professor at Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane and the University of Newcastle, Australia; the University of Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina; South East European University, Macedonia; the Potchefstroom Campus of North-West University in Potchefstroom, South Africa; the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; and the University of São Paulo, Brazil. He regularly serves as a visiting professor at the Potchefstroom Campus of North-West University.

Before joining the faculty at the University of Dayton as professor and chair of the Department of Educational Administration in July 1996, Russo taught at the University of Kentucky in Lexington from August 1992 to July 1996 and at Fordham University in his native New York City from September 1989 to July 1992. He taught high school for 8½ years before and after graduation from law school. He received a BA (classical civilization) in 1972, a JD in 1983, and an EdD (educational administration and supervision) in 1989 from St. John’s University in New York City. He also received a master of divinity degree from the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception in Huntington, New York, in 1978, as well as a PhD Honoris Causa from the Potchefstroom Campus of North-West University, South Africa, in May 2004 for his contributions to the field of education law.



Gerald M. Cattaro is a professor of educational administration at Fordham University Graduate School of Education in New York City. Since 2005, he has served as chair of the Division of Educational Leadership Administration and Policy. For the past 20 years Cattaro has headed The Center for Catholic School Leadership & Faith-Based Education as executive director. He is active on three journal boards, reflecting his research interests in urban education, international education, and faith-based education. He serves on numerous national and international commissions of education. His writing appears in books, peer-reviewed journals, monographs, and chapters. Cattaro has worked as a practitioner in the role of teacher, chair, assistant principal, principal, and district-level administration in all levels of K–12 education.

About the Author

Bill earned an EdD from the University of Maine in Curriculum & Instruction and Youth Political Socialization and his MEd in Social Studies Education from the University of Washington. Bill is a Professor of Education at New England College in Henniker, NH where he teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in Educational Psychology, Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Leadership, and School Climate Research, Leadership, and Facilitation.

He created Main Street Academix in 2001 and founded The Center for School Climate and Learning in 2010. These centers provide school climate research and evaluation services and professional development on school climate leadership to schools and state departments of education throughout the country. Bill and his colleagues offer schools on-site school climate improvement services and support for implementation of the SafeMeasures™ Process: which offers a systemic, data-driven approach to preventing bullying and improving school climate and learning.

Bill has made hundreds of presentations on his research and school climate work at schools and professional conferences. He is the co-author of two books, Beyond Bullying…Beyond Compliance: Transforming School Climate and Learning (2011) Corwin Press, and the Respectful School: How Educators and Students Can Conquer Hate and Harassment, with Stephen Wessler (ASCD, 2003) and several articles on school climate leadership and bullying prevention.

 



Rick Gordon has a PhD. in Social and Multicultural Foundations of Education from the University of Colorado-Boulder, a MEd. from University of Minnesota in Political Science with a Focus on Organizational Theory and Public Policy and graduated from Stanford University with honors in Political Science. He was Founding Director of Compass School, a grade 7-12 school that has scored highest on a national survey on Respect, Safety, and School Climate. Rick co-directed The Critical Skills-Education by Design Program at Antioch New England Graduate School, where he also was on the Education Department faculty, and has worked extensively with schools and higher education on Service Learning (including editing the well received Problem Based Service Learning Fieldguide:Making a Difference in Higher Education). Rick has been a Humanities teacher, run several small businesses, and had the honor of visiting thousands of classrooms as an educational ethnographer and consultant over the years. He continues to be involved in teacher development and teaches courses in School Leadership in various locales. Rick has long experience in Experiential Education with Outward Bound and Interlocken, and has traveled extensively around the globe leading programs for youth. Rick played college soccer, and continues his commitment to learning through sports as a coach of youth soccer and nordic skiing.
