About the Author
Denise A. Hines, Ph.D., is a Research Associate Professor in the Psychology Department at Clark University, where she is also the Director of the Family Impact Seminar Series and the Co-Director of the Clark Anti-Violence Education Program. She completed her doctoral degree in Psychology at Boston University, and then spent two years as an NIMH postdoctoral research fellow at the University of New Hampshire’s Family Research Laboratory with Drs. Murray Straus and David Finkelhor. She is the author or co-author of over 30 articles or book chapters, and two books on issues of family violence, both published by Sage. She has also been the principal investigator on five major grants, focusing on issues of the etiology of partner violence; prevention of dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking on college campuses; and the mental and physical health of male victims of partner violence and their children.

Kathleen Malley-Morrison, Ed.D., is a Professor of Psychology at Boston University. She has conducted considerable research on family violence since 1980 when she was a postdoctoral fellow on the family violence team at Children's Hospital in Boston. She regularly teaches undergraduate and graduate courses focusing on family violence. She is the lead author Treating Child Abuse: Family Violence in Hospitals, along with Eli Newberger, Richard Bourne, and Jane Snyder. She has also co-authored Studying Families (SAGE, 1991) with with Anne Copeland, and Family Violence in a Cultural Perspective (SAGE, 2004), with Denise Hines. Her current focus is primarily on cross-cultural and international perspectives on family violence and abuse as well as on war and peace.

Leila B. Dutton, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor in the Criminal Justice Department of the University of New Haven. She received her Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology at the University of Rhode Island in 2004. She spent two years as an NIMH postdoctoral research fellow at the University of New Hampshire’s Family Research Laboratory, working with Murray Straus on the International Dating Violence Study. Her research interests include stalking, partner violence, and sexual coercion. She has published her research in the Journal of Interpersonal Violence, Partner Abuse, and Journal of Social and Personal Relationships. She has written two book chapters on stalking. She is currently on the editorial board of the journal Partner Abuse. She is also the Co-Director of the University of New Haven’s Institute for Social Justice and Co-Director of UNH’s Campus Grant to Reduce Violence Against Women funded by the Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women.

Jackie Walsh is an independent educational consultant who partners with educators across the country to enhance teaching and leading in classrooms, schools, and districts. Her passion and primary area of expertise is questioning―for both student and adult learning. Based in Montgomery, Alabama, Jackie is also the lead consultant for the Alabama Best Practices Center, which affords her the opportunity to work with networks of school teams, district teams, instructional partners, and superintendents.

 

Jackie’s early experience as a high school social studies teacher contributed to her passion for questioning. As a designer and facilitator of professional learning for teachers, instructional coaches, and administrators, she links quality questioning practices not only to student thinking and learning but also to adult learning and reflection. Her commitment is to collaborative design that customizes learning to the context of the learners. Her experience spans work in K-12, higher education, a regional research laboratory, and a state department of education.

Beth Dankert Sattes is a co-developer with Jackie Acree Walsh of Questioning and Understanding to Improve Learning and Thinking (QUILT), a nationally validated professional development program on effective questioning. They are also co-authors of Inside School Improvement (2000) and co-presenters of the Video Journal in Education series Questioning to Stimulate Thinking (1999). These two former classroom teachers have trained hundreds of administrators and teachers across the nation in effective questioning. Their other joint ventures have focused on creating effective professional development for educators, sharing leadership for continuous school improvement, and creating a culture for high-performance learning communities. A recent example of their work is the design and delivery of professional development for school improvement specialists―consultants or staff who work to develop the capacity of schools to improve achievement for all students. They have also developed professional development modules on improving school culture (for the Southern Regional Education Board) and leading learning communities (for the Alabama Leadership Academy). Beth Dankert Sattes holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Vanderbilt University and a master’s degree in early childhood special education from Peabody College. Both Sattes and Walsh have served as faculty for the National Staff Development Council’s Academy.

Effective Tool

This book is an EXCELLENT resource for all teachers. It delves deeply into the "art of questioning" that is relevant in each classroom. This book can serve new teachers, experienced teachers, and seasoned teachers. You will never think of questioning in the same way again. The book empowers teachers/facilitators to write quality questions that also empower students to THINK, discuss, question, and learn from the experience. For teachers tasked with implementing Common Core, this book is a must for your tool box of effective teaching techniques.

This was the first book I've read in a long time that I could apply directly to my teaching in an instant. It was well written and provided a long list of strategies for teachers wanting their students to begin owning their learning.

About the Author

Robert R. Perkinson is the clinical director of Keystone Treatment Center in Canton, South Dakota. He is a licensed psychologist; licensed marriage & family therapist; internationally certified alcohol and drug counselor; South Dakota certified chemical dependency counselor, Level III; and a nationally certified gambling counselor and supervisor. His specialty areas focus on treating alcoholics, addicts, and pathological gamblers. He is the author of Chemical Dependency Counseling: A Practical Guide (2nd ed.) (2003a), which is the leading treatment manual in the world for chemical dependency counselors. With Dr. Arthur E. Jongsma Jr. (2001) he is the coauthor of The Addiction Treatment Planner, which is the best-selling treatment planner and computer software program for mental health and addiction professionals. He has also written The Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Patient Workbook (2003c) and the Gambling Addiction Patient Workbook (2003b). These workbooks have all of the exercises patients need to enter a stable recovery. His book entitled Treating Alcoholism: How to Help Your Clients Enter Recovery (2004) trains professionals how to treat patients with alcohol problems. He is the author of the book God Talks to You (2000) and the meditation tape A Communication from God (2008) by cdbaby, which help addicts make their first conscious contact with a Higher Power of their own understanding. He is a composer and has completed his second CD, Peace Will Come, music that helps addicts learn the essentials of a spiritual journey. With Dr. Jean LaCour (2004), he wrote the Faith-Based Addiction Curriculum to teach professionals of faith how to treat addiction. Dr. Perkinson is an international motivational speaker and regular contributor to numerous professional journals. Finally a great book for gamblers.

We use this book for all of our patients. They love the exercises and take them home and go over them again and again. This keeps them thinking about recovery. The book leaves no stone unturned. It has everything a problem gambler needs to stay in recovery.

I would take a "gamble" on this book!

This book is even better than expected. If you have a gambling problem, think you might have a problem or know someone who does, you will find this book very informative. This book could also be used by Clinicians for their clients. It really encourages the reader to take a hard look at what their gambling habits have cost them, in terms of lost time, money and relationships. This book would be helpful for the loved one of an addicted gambler. While gambling is meant for entertainment, it ceases to be entertaining when the compulsion to gamble takes over your life This book helps the reader to feel like they are not alone.

About the Author

Curt R. Bartol was a college professor for more than 30 years, teaching a wide variety of both undergraduate and graduate courses, including Biopsychology, Criminal Behavior, Juvenile Delinquency, Introduction to Forensic Psychology, Social Psychology, and Psychology and Law. He earned his PhD in personality/social psychology from Northern Illinois University in 1972. He was instrumental in creating and launching Castleton State College’s graduate program in forensic psychology and served as its director for 6 years. As a licensed clinical psychologist, he has been a consulting police psychologist to local, municipal, state, and federal law enforcement agencies for over 25 years. In addition to editing Current Perspectives, he has written Introduction to Forensic Psychology (forthcoming in its 4th edition), Criminal Behavior: A Psychosocial Approach (now in its 10th ed.), Juvenile Delinquency and Antisocial Behavior: A Developmental Perspective (3rd ed.), Criminal and Behavioral Profiling, and Psychology and Law (4th ed.). 

Anne M. Bartol earned an MA and a PhD in criminal justice from State University of New York at Albany. She also holds an MA in journalism from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. She taught criminal justice, sociology, and journalism courses over a 20-year college teaching career and has worked as a journalist and a social worker in child and adolescent protective services In addition to editing Current Perspectives, she has co-authored Introduction to Forensic Psychology, Juvenile Delinquency, Psychology and Law, and Criminal Behavior. She has served as book review editor and managing editor of Criminal Justice and Behavior and has published articles on women and criminal justice, rural courts, and the history of forensic psychology.

Fascinating!

Although I should say "fascinating, if you are interested in the basic theories and foundations of the subject of forensic psychology." I do understand that this is a textbook, and many people have a hard time reading texts; however, if you can get past that, this book is probably the best "intro to" book that I have ever read. I've used it in one class so far and will use it for at least three others.

I am using this book for a course in school. It is a basic text book, nothing spectacular about it but it is readable. Some texts are dry and can make the course a bore, this does not do that. It contains pretty basic level information about the criminal justice system and forensic psychology.

About the Author
Richard Arum has recently served as Professor of Sociology and Education at New York University; Program Director of Education Research at the Social Science Research Council; and Senior Fellow at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. His past work with various co-authors includes Aspiring Adults Adrift: Tentative Transitions of College Graduates (University of Chicago Press, 2014); Academically Adrift: Limited Learning on College Campuses (University of Chicago Press, 2011); Judging School Discipline: The Crisis of Moral Authority (Harvard University Press, 2003); Stratification in Higher Education: A Comparative Study (Stanford University Press, 2007); and Improving Learning Environments: School Discipline and Student Achievement in Comparative Perspective (Stanford University Press, 2012). 

Irenee Beattie is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at University of California, Merced. Her research examines racial/ethnic, gender, and class inequalities in adolescent transitions to adulthood as well as how families, high schools, and colleges can foster beneficial social capital among underrepresented college student populations. Her research has been funded by the American Educational Research Association and the Hellman Faculty Fellows Fund. She has published in various outlets such as Sociology of Education, Youth & Society, and Harvard University Press.

Karly Ford is an Assistant Professor at the Pennsylvania State University. Her research focuses on the relationship between education and social stratification. She received a Masters of Education in International Education Policy from Harvard University in 2007 and a Ph.D. in Sociology of Education from New York University in 2014. Ford's research interests are Higher Education, Sociology of Education, International Comparative Education, Institutional Variation, and Educational Assessment.

a "must have" for those interested in educational equality

This book offers a broad introduction to the sociological study of education. Having purchased the first edition, I was happy to see the many updated chapters in the second edition. The authors have done a great job selecting key classical pieces as well as recent scholarship in the area, particularly relating to racial and class-based inequality in education. Anyone who cares about educational equality--parents, teachers, students, politicians, etc--should have this book on their shelf as a reference!

I really didn't enjoy this book at all, and I so happy the class is over. I am a psych major and had to take this class for another requirement, so I am a bit biased.

About the Author
Diane Yendol-Hoppey is the Director of the Benedum Collaborative and a Professor of Education at West Virginia University. The Benedum Collaborative is one of the oldest school/university partnerships in the nation. Diane spent the first thirteen years of her career in education teaching in Pennsylvania and Maryland. In her work at Penn State, the University of Florida, and West Virginia University, Diane focuses on job-embedded teacher professional development and the cultivation of teacher leadership. Her research explores how powerful vehicles for teacher professional development including teacher inquiry, professional learning communities, and coaching/mentoring can support school improvement. She has authored numerous studies which have appeared in such journals as Teachers College Record and Journal of Teacher Education. She is coauthor (with Nancy Fichtman Dana) of three books, The Reflective Educator’s Guide to Classroom Research: Learning to Teach and Teaching to Learn through Practitioner Inquiry, The Reflective Educator’s Guide to Professional Development: Coaching Inquiry-Oriented Learning Communities and The Reflective Educator’s Guide to Mentoring: Strengthening Practice through Knowledge, Story, and Metaphor, all from Corwin Press.

About the Author
Ola W. Barnett is a Distinguished Professor Emerita of Psychology at Pepperdine University, Malibu, California.  She earned her undergraduate and doctoral degrees in Psychology at UCLA, specializing in Learning.  Her initial research centered on batterers, and she later studied battered women and dating violence.  She has coauthored two best-selling Sage books (with Alyce D. LaViolette) on why battered women stay with abusive partners.  These books provide a scientific explanation, grounded in learning theory, for understanding the obstacles battered women face in trying to break free.  She remains active in the field of family violence by reviewing articles for a large number of journals and performing as an external grant reviewer for a few organizations.  She serves on the editorial board of the new journal, Youth Violence and Juvenile Justice.  She also continues research on the impact of transitional housing on the lives of battered women.

Cindy L. Miller-Perrin is currently Professor of Psychology and Blanche E. Seaver Professor of Social Science at Pepperdine University in Malibu, California. She is also a clinical child psychologist and has worked with developmentally delayed, maltreated, and other troubled children and their families. She has coauthored three books, including Child Sexual Abuse: Sharing the Responsibility (with S. Wurtele, 1992), Child Maltreatment: An Introduction (with R. Perrin, Sage, 1999, 2007), and Family Violence Across the Lifespan (with O. Barnett & R. Perrin, Sage 1997, 2005, 2011). She is also the author or coauthor of numerous articles and book chapters on topics including child sexual abuse prevention, perceptions associated with child maltreatment, family violence, and psychology and religion. She enjoys teaching and researching with undergraduates and is the recipient of the 2008 Howard A. White Award for Teaching Excellence. She received her doctorate from Washington State University.

Robin D. Perrin is currently Professor of Sociology at Pepperdine University in Malibu, California. His research interests and publications are in the areas of interpersonal violence, deviance theory, the social construction of social problems, and the sociology of religion. He is the coauthor of three books: Social Deviance: Being, Behaving, and Branding (with D. Ward & T. Carter, 1991), Child Maltreatment: An Introduction (with C. Miller-Perrin, Sage, 1999; 2007), and Family Violence Across the Lifespan (with O. Barnett & C. Miller-Perrin, Sage, 1997, 2005; 2011). He is the author or coauthor of numerous articles on a variety of topics related to religion, deviance, and interpersonal violence. He is the recipient of the 2004 Howard A. White Award for Teaching Excellence. He received his doctorate in sociology from Washington State University in 1989. Following his doctoral studies he was Assistant Professor of Sociology at Seattle Pacific University in Seattle, Washington.

This was purchased for a social work summer class at my university. It will keep you reading. The information is invaluable and statistics are abundant. An ideal addition to my library for future reference. But, as I said, it will keep you busy reading in a ten week summer course. I recommend using it for a full semester course.
