About the Author
Joan Franklin Smutny is founder and director of the Center for Gifted, a Northern Illinois University Partner. She directs programs for thousands of bright, talented, and gifted children in the Chicago area annually. She also teaches creative writing in many of these programs as well as courses on gifted education for graduate students at the university level. She is editor of the Illinois Association for Gifted Children Journal, contributing editor of Understanding Our Gifted, and a regular contributor to the Gifted Education Communicator, Parenting for High Potential, and the Gifted Education Press Quarterly. Smutny has authored, co-authored, and edited many articles and books on gifted education for teachers, parents, and administrators, including Challenging High Potential Spanish Speaking Students (2012), Teaching Advanced Learners in the General Education Classroom (2011), Manifesto of the Gifted Girl (2010), Differentiating for the Young Child, Second Edition (2010), Igniting Creativity in Gifted Learners, K–6 (2009), Acceleration for Gifted Learners, K–5 (2007), Reclaiming the Lives of Gifted Girls and Women (2007), Designing and Developing Programs for Gifted Students (2003), Underserved Gifted Populations (2003), Gifted Education: Promising Practices (2003), Stand Up for Your Gifted Child (2001), The Young Gifted Child: Potential and Promise, an Anthology (1998), and Teaching Young Gifted Children in the Regular Classroom (1997). S.E. von Fremd is an independent scholar, writer, and editor with a background in education, cultural studies, and dance. She performed with the Never Stop Moving Dance Company in Chicago under the direction of Reynaldo Martinez and taught creative dance and theater to children in the city and surrounding areas. Her interest in creativity and culture eventually led her to do a doctorate in performance studies at Northwestern University. This included a year’s research in Uganda, where she focused on the role of popular theater and dance in reviving cultural identity and educating children and young people throughout the country. She has written several book reviews on African musical traditions, a monograph on the cultural legacy of Kenyan novelist Ngugi wa Thiong’o and Nigerian playwright Wole Soyinka, another monograph on refugees in Africa, and an article on the performing arts as a popular forum for education in Uganda. She has also given presentations on Uganda’s creative artists under the reign of Idi Amin and on dance movements throughout the continent of Africa.

About the Author
Helen Taylor Greene is Professor of Administration of Justice in the Barbara Jordan–Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs (SPA) at Texas Southern University (TSU). She completed her BS in Sociology at Howard University, her MS in the Administration of Justice at American University, and both her MA in Political Science and PhD in Criminology at the University of Maryland, College Park. Her areas of research include race and crime, juvenile justice, and policing. She has authored and co-authored books, has peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, and has served as lead editor for the Encyclopedia of Race and Crime (2009). 

Shaun L. Gabbidon is Distinguished Professor of Criminal Justice in the School of Public Affairs at Penn State Harrisburg. He earned his PhD in Criminology at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Gabbidon has served as a fellow at Harvard University’s W. E. B. Du Bois Institute for Afro-American Research and as an adjunct faculty member in the Center for Africana Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. His areas of interest include race and crime, criminal justice and criminology pedagogy, and private security.  Professor Gabbidon is the author of more than 100 scholarly publications, including 60 peer-reviewed articles and 11 books.

Originally a narrow specialty within emergency medicine, the field now extends to trauma psychology, military psychiatry and behavioral health, post-traumatic stress and stress disorders, trauma social work, disaster mental health, and, most recently, the subfield of history and trauma, with sociohistorical examination of long-term effects and meanings of major traumas experienced by whole communities and nations, both natural (Pompeii, Hurricane Katrina) and man-made (the Holocaust, 9/11). One reason for this expansion involves important scientific breakthroughs in detecting the neurobiology of trauma that is connecting biology with human behavior, which in turn, is applicable to all fields involving human thought and response, including but not limited to psychiatry, medicine and the health sciences, the social and behavioral sciences, the humanities, and law. Researchers within these fields and more can contribute to a universal understanding of immediate and long-term consequences–both good and bad–of trauma, both for individuals and for broader communities and institutions. Trauma encyclopedias published to date all center around psychological trauma and its emotional effects on the individual as a disabling or mental disorder requiring mental health services. This element is vital and has benefited from scientific and professional breakthroughs in theory, research, and applications. Editor Figley is both an extensively published scholar and the director of the Traumatology Institute at Tulane. The signed entries are lengthy, with few under two pages. Most of these contain extensive see also references, and all have lists of further readings. The contributors are drawn primarily from academia. As expected, the entries cover a wide range of subjects: Battered women; Brain and trauma; Compassion fatigue; Human trafficking; Internet terrorism; Neurobiological effects of trauma; Trauma prevention; and Wartime rape. The volume begins with an alphabetical list of all entries, followed by a reader’s guide that groups the entries by topic, including “Crime and Law,” “Ethics and Philosophy,” and “Natural Sciences.” There is a comprehensive index at the end of the volume. This interdisciplinary approach to the topic of trauma is unique in an encyclopedia format. Related works include The Encyclopedia of Psychological Trauma (2008) and The Encyclopedia of Trauma and Traumatic Stress Disorders (2010), but neither covers the subject as broadly. About the Author
Charles R. Figley (Ph.D., Pennsylvania State University) is the Paul Henry Kurzweg, MD Distinguished Chair in Disaster Mental Health at Tulane University and a Professor in the Tulane Graduate School of Social Work. He is also director of the award-winning Traumatology Institute. The Institute was recognized in 2000 as the best program of its kind by the University Continuing Education Association. He is a former Fulbright Fellow and was a Professor in the College of Social Work at Florida State University before moving to Tulane University in July 2008. Dr. Figley is also a psychologist and family therapist and was a Professor of Family Therapy and Psychology at Purdue University (1974-1989). He is founding editor of the Journal of Traumatic Stress and currently editor of the journal Traumatology, published by SAGE Publications. Dr. Figley has written more than 200 scholarly works, including 19 books, most of which have focused on stress, resiliency, and coping. His first book, Stress Disorder Among Vietnam Veterans (1978), focused on combat stress and is credited as helping to establish the modern era of traumatology. In his subsequent books, he has continually expanded his focus to other traumatizing contexts.

About the Author

Dr. E. Alana James, received her Ed.D. in educational leadership from Teachers College in 2005.  Since then she has helped over 30 doctoral candidates in either educational leadership or business move through the process on to graduation.  Working primarily as supervisor for a number of online for profit universities, but also sometimes in the role of committee member, she identified the key places and challenges that created extra stress and, unfortunately, sometimes breakdown.  This book and her work developing DoctoralNet.com is in reaction to those difficulties and will, with adoption, increase graduation rates for those working towards a PhD or other type of doctoral degree.  You can follow DoctoralNet on twitter, facebook or Google +.

Invaluable practical tool for getting the right things done, the right way

In the world of theory, after all is said and done, there is a lot more said than done. This book will help you with the problem of translating theory into action.

This book is a major leap forward in helping Action Research (AR) practitioners get things moving and sticking with it through a process for transformational change (AR) that can so easily go astray. The book is loaded with practical tips and planning guides that help you convert energy and passion into sustainable change, and will improve your chances of getting from start to finish.

As part of my doctoral studies in applying AR in educational and business settings, I've reviewed over 100 of scholarly and practitioner articles and books on AR methodology, and led a 3 year AR change management project at a mid-sized college. I've applied AR in my consulting work in the equity & futures trading world. This book is by far the best single source of practical wisdom and insight I have found. About the Author
Ross M. Mullner, PhD, MPH, is Associate Professor of Health Policy Administration at the University of Illinois at Chicago.  He also serves as Special Assistant to the Director of the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services and as Visiting Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Health Systems Management at Rush University.  His research interests include health services research, health care marketing, and the history of public health, and he has investigated factors leading to hospital closures, mergers and consolidation of health facilities and management issues.  He teaches courses on health services research and on health care marketing, as well as managed care, epidemiology, and health care eonomics.  He is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Medical Systems and has served as Guest Editor for several special issues of this journal, as well as for the Journal of Consumer Marketing (a special issue on Pharmaceutical Marketing).  In addition to nearly 100 articles, he has written or edited several books and monographs, including Health Care, Technology, and the Competitive Environment.

About the Author

Rosemarye (Rose) Taylor has a rich background that includes middle and high teaching, school administration, and district administration. She was a reading, language arts, and Spanish teacher, and counselor, followed by service as a middle and high school administrator, and district level administrator in Georgia and Florida, USA. In private sector management she was Director of Professional Development for Scholastic, Inc., New York. Currently, she is Associate Professor of Educational Leadership at the University of Central Florida in Orlando.

As Associate Professor of Educational Leadership at the University of Central Florida, her specialty is systematic leadership to improve student achievement Pk-20, which as lead to her interest and research in the professional practice doctorate. She has conducted research on leadership and change, particularly as it relates to accountability. Presentations on this topic have been given at University Council of Educational Administration, American Association of Educational Research, American Association of School Administrators, International Reading Association, Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, National Association of Secondary School Principals, and National Middle School Association conferences. Her articles have been published in Kappan, Educational Leadership, Middle School Journal, Schools in the Middle, American Secondary Education, AASA Professor, The National Staff Development Journal, Principal Leadership, The School Administrator, Educational Research Service Spectrum, and International Journal of Education Management. Dr. Taylor conducted interviews with dozens of elite school principals and district level leaders. The data collected in these interviews has been organized to focus on common themes--things all of these leaders were doing that enabled them to change the culture of their schools. Examples of these themes include stimulating intellectual growth in their faculties, investing personally in change, and using data to drive decisions.

About the Author

Frank Dane received a B.S. in Psychology from University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a Ph.D. in Social Psychology from the University of Kansas.  His advisor was Larry Wrightsman and he has certainly followed in Larry’s footsteps in terms of staying active in publishing and doing research.  He was Associate Professor of Psychology at Clemson University from 1983-1988 and he then moved to Mercer University in Georgia where he was Associate Professor and Department Chair of Psychology.  He stayed at Mercer as the William Heard Kilpatrick Professor of Psychology in the College of Liberal Arts and as Professor of Internal Medicine at Mercer University School of Medicine until 2001 and then moved to his current position as James V. Finkbeiner Endowed Chair of Ethics and Public Policy in the College of Arts and Behavioral Sciences.



Arlene Fink (Ph.D.) is Professor of Medicine and Public Health at the University of California, Los Angeles and President of the Langley Research Institute.  Her main interests include evaluation and survey research and the conduct of research literature reviews as well as the evaluation of their quality.  Dr. Fink has conducted many research studies in medicine, public health and education.  She is on the faculty of UCLA’s Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program and its Health Services Research Center and is on the Advisory Board of the University of Southern California’s Minority Research Center.  She is also a consultant to the American Society for Bioethics, the International Society for Clinical Bioethics, and L’institut de Promotion del la Prévention Secondaire en Addictologie (IPPSA) Paris, France.  Professor Fink has lectured extensively in the United States and internationally and is the author of over 100 peer-reviewed articles and 15 textbooks.
