About the Author
Ralph Brody, Ph.D. passed away on February 8, 2006. Dr. Brody was previously on the faculty of Cleveland State University where he taught social policy and human service administration. He also taught graduate courses on human service delivery models at Case Western Reserve University. Previously, he served for fifteen years as the executive director of the Federation for Community Planning, an organization that provides research, planning and advocacy on health and human services. Dr. Brody authored books on case management, the state legislative process, fundraising events, community problem solving, service learning, and macro practice. Dr. Brody’s many years as a manager and teacher convinced him that the issues facing those in human service organizations were universal and applied to boards of directors as well as NGOs. He dedicated himself to developing tools to enhance the understanding and skills of those in leadership roles, from Cleveland to India, Spain, Ghana, Ethiopia, Egypt and Nigeria.  His frequent workshops in Kenya led to the translation of his casebook into the Swahili language. His co-authored book with Dr. Nair: Grassroot Development – Establishing Successful Microenterprises has been published in English and Malayalam language. Dr. Brody’s work touched millions, and his contributions will continue to educate, inform and inspire future students and professionals in human services field.

Murali D. Nair, Ph.D., Senior Fulbright Scholar is a Clinical Professor and Co-Chair of Community Organization/Planning/Administration Concentration (COPA) at the University of Southern California School of Social Work. Prior to that Murali was a professor at Cleveland State University for 20 years, which included serving as the co-director of the Center for Healing Across Cultures and director of the School of Social Work. From there, he received the Distinguished Faculty Award for Teaching, the Distinguished Faculty Award for Service, and the Multicultural Leadership Award. Columbia University, where Murali received his doctorate, recently inducted him into the institution’s School of Social Work hall of fame for his exemplary leadership in social work education and his exceptional professional achievements. Murali has co-authored four books with Ralph Brody, including Community Development; Grassroot Development: Establishing Successful Microenterprises, Service Learning (3rd edition); and Macro Practice: A Generalist Approach (9th edition).

Great for students and future leaders.

Though many would argue that the information in this textbook is common sense, there's no better way to solidify the art of management with a guide. The information provided in the text is solid, a bit lengthy (which is to elaborate, which is nice), and gets into the deep mechanics of being culturally sensitive to your clients, employee health (in context to respect and their relationships with one another), and successfully creating, implementing, and running a human service organization.

Incredibly dull reading that was required for graduate work. Useful information can be mined out especially thanks to the handy lists and italicized words found in text that draws attention to pertinent information, but everything else can be skipped over.

About the Author

Michael J. Kavanagh is currently Professor Emeritus of Management at the  University at Albany, State University of New York. He also serves on the faculty of the Lorange School of Business Administration, Zurich, Switzerland. He is past editor of Group & Organization Management and a fellow of the American Psychological Association, the American Psychological Society, the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, and the Eastern Academy of Management. He has been involved in the HRIS field since 1982. He established the HRIS MBA program at the University at Albany in 1984 and has taught numerous courses in the field of HRIS. In 2006, he received the Award for Career Excellence from the International Association for Human Resource Information Management (IHRIM). He received his PhD in I/O psychology from Iowa State University in 1969.

Mohan Thite is an associate professor at Griffith Business School, Griffith University, Brisbane, Australia. He has more than 25 years’ experience as an HR professional, both in industry and in academia. He is the Editor-in-Chief of South Asian Journal of HRM (SAJHRM), published from Sage. He is a fellow of the Australian Human Resources Institute. He has been teaching HRIS for several years. His research & publications cover a broad range of management areas, including strategic HRM & knowledge management, e-HRM/HRIS, HR in Indian BPO, multinationals from emerging economies, HRM in Asia, global mobility of talent  and global services offshoring. He has published 3 books & over 50 book chapters and articles in international journals such as Human Resource Management (USA), Work, Employment, and Society, the International Journal of HRM, and the International Journal of Project Management.

Richard D. Johnson is an associate professor of management at the University at Albany, State University of New York. His research interests are human resource information systems (HRIS), the psychological and sociological impacts of computing, computer self-efficacy, e-learning, and issues surrounding the digital divide. He has published over 40 academic and practitioner articles in journals such as Information Systems Research, Human Resource Management Review, Journal of the Association for Information Systems, and the International Journal of Human Computer Studies. He serves on the editorial boards of AIS Transactions on Human-Computer Interaction and The Data Base for Advances in Information Systems. He is a certified Human Resource Information Professional and is co-Director of the University at Albany’s nationally recognized MBA HRIS program. He received his PhD from the University of Maryland, College Park.

I was very displeased with the entire process.

I was very displeased with the entire process. I have never had a problem with receiving my orders before. First of all, I never got my book. I filed an online complaint and was told that I would get a full refund charged back to my card. I never got that either. I ended up having to buy another copy of the book from Barnes & Noble. I received that one with no problems.

About the Author

Daniel J. Monti, Jr. is Professor of Public Policy and Urban Affairs at Saint Louis University.  A graduate of Oberlin College and the University of North Carolina, he is a former Woodrow Wilson Fellow and has written extensively on matters of urban affairs, race and ethnic relations, American civic life, inner-city redevelopment, and youth gangs.  He has been involved in an ongoing study of civic culture as it is expressed in cities across the United States and around the world. His books include Engaging Strangers: Civil Rites, Civic Capitalism, and Public Order in Boston (Fairleigh Dickinson University, 2013),The American City: A Social and Cultural History (Blackwell, 1999), Wannabe: Gangs in Suburbs and Schools (Blackwell, 1994), and Race, Redevelopment, and the New Company Town (SUNY Press, 1990).

Michael Ian Borer is a graduate of Lafayette College and obtained a doctorate in Sociology at Boston University.  He is currently Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and the former Vice President of the Society for the Study of Symbolic Interaction. Concerned about the dynamics of urban cultures, he is especially interested in the social, emotional, and moral relationships between people and places. His books include Faithful to Fenway: Believing in Boston, Baseball, and America’s Most Beloved Ballpark (NYU Press, 2008) and Varieties of Urban Experience: The American City and the Practice of Culture (University of American Press, 2006).

Lyn C. Macgregor received her undergraduate degree at Boston University and a doctorate in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is currently the Associate Director of the Robert F. and Jean E. Holtz Center for Science at Technology Studies there. She specializes in the sociology of culture, communities, and consumption, with a focus on the building of social ties and social networks. She is the author of Habits of the Heartland (2010).

About the Author
Jonathan M. White, PhD, is Assistant Professor of Sociology and Faculty Associate to Service Learning at Bridgewater State College in Massachusetts. His primary areas of specialization are inequality, poverty, globalization, human rights, and public sociology.

Dr. White has received numerous teaching and humanitarian awards. He is the Founding Director of Sports for Hunger, the Hunger Resource Center, and the Halloween for Hunger and Pass-the-Fast campaigns. He serves on the board of directors for Free the Children, Peace Through Youth, the Graduation Pledge Alliance, and the Holocaust and Human Rights Center ofMaine. Dr.White also has served as Director and Coordinator for Youth Ambassadors for Peace, a project aimed at helping war-affected youth. He has authored articles in the fields of inequality and globalization, and is currently writing a book entitled Hungry to Be Heard: Voices From a Malnourished America.

Dr. White lives in Massachusetts with his wife, Shelley, and is the very proud uncle of 13 nieces and nephews.

Kathleen Odell Korgen, PhD, is Professor of Sociology at William Paterson University in Wayne, New Jersey. Her primary areas of specialization are race relations, racial identity, and public sociology. She has conducted trainings in corporate and campus settings on issues of diversity.

Dr. Korgen’s published work on race relations and racial identity includes Crossing the Racial Divide: Close Friendships Between Black and White Americans (2002) and From Black to Biracial: Transforming Racial Identity Among Americans (1998, 1999).

Raised in Massachusetts, Dr. Korgen now lives in Montclair, New Jersey, with her husband, Jeff; daughters Julie and Jessica; and her mother, Patricia.

About the Author

Stephen F. Duncan is a professor in the School of Family Life at Brigham Young University.  He received a Masters degree in Family Sciences (Family Life Education emphasis) from Brigham Young University and a Ph.D. in Family Studies from Purdue University. He has authored or coauthored numerous outreach publications for lay audiences and professionals, written hundreds of articles for newspaper columns, been interviewed numerous times for television, radio, and magazine outlets, and directed nationally recognized outreach family life education programs. He served as an Extension Family Life Specialist at Auburn University in Alabama for 5 years and held a similar position at Montana State University for over 7 years. At BYU he teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in family life education and directs outreach projects for the School of Family Life. He directs the Forever Families website (www.foreverfamilies.byu.edu) and was content director for Real Families, Real Answers, a Rocky Mountain Emmy Award-nominated documentary series appearing on public television channels nationwide. He has certification as a Family Life Educator.

Dr. Duncan has actively contributed to the scholarship of family life education, authoring numerous articles on outreach programs and evaluation, many of which have appeared in leading family life education outlets. He serves or has served on several editorial boards, including Family Relations, Journal of Couple and Relationship Therapy, and Family Science Review. 

H. Wallace (Wally) Goddard is retired from being a Family Life Specialist at the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service. His earlier experience included serving as an Extension Family and Child Development Specialist at Auburn University for over 6 years, during which time he developed Principles of Parenting, a broad parenting program that has been adopted by several states, and The Great Self Mystery, a youth identity program that has been adopted by national organizations. He was also one of four scholars invited to develop the National Extension Parent Education Model, which is the base document for all extension parent education. He writes monthly columns for several Web magazines on various family subjects and has authored general audience family books.

In addition to work in Extension, he also provided content expertise to Stephen R. Covey when he wrote The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Families. Experience in both university and business settings has provided a wealth of background in family life education. He also has graduate training in instructional psychology and certification as a Family Life Educator.

During 14 years of work with the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service, he developed a television series for public television, programs on parenting, personal well-being, and parenting and worked on the national team that developed a model of couple relationships. He has served as chair of the Education and Enrichment section of the National Council on Family Relations, the premier family professional organization in the world, and is an NCFR Fellow and recipient of the Margaret E. Arcus Outstanding Family Life Educator Award.

About the Author

Dorothy G. Singer, is retired Senior Research Scientist, Department of Psychology, Yale University. Dr. Singer is also Co-Director, with Jerome L. Singer, of the Yale University Family Television Research and Consultation Center affiliated with the Zigler Center for Child Development and Public Policy. She is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association. Her research and publications are in the area of early childhood development, television effects on youth, and parent training in imaginative play. She received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Teachers College, Columbia University in 2006, and in 2009, the Award for Distinguished Lifetime Contributions to Media Psychology from the American Psychological Association.

Jerome L. Singer is Professor Emeritus of Psychology at Yale University and a Fellow of the American Psychological Association. His specialty is research on the psychology of imagination and daydreaming. Dr. Singer has authored articles on thought processes, imagery, personality, psychotherapy, children's play, and the effects of television. He has been President of the Division of Aesthetics, Creativity and the Arts in the American Psychological Association. In 2008, he was awarded the Rudolf Arnheim Award for Distinguished Contributions to the Psychology of Aesthetics, Creativity, and the Arts from the American Psychological Association, and in 2009, the Paul Farnsworth Award for Lifetime Contribution and Service, Division 10, American Psychological Association.

About the Author
Carmella S. Franco is a State Trustee appointed by the California State Board of Education to oversee the academically failing Alisal Union Elementary School District in Monterey County. After retiring from twelve years as Superintendent of the Whittier City School District in 2008, Carmella then served for nearly one year as an Interim Superintendent of the Woodland Joint Unified School District. Her thirty-eight years in public education include having served as Director of Personnel, Elementary and Middle School Principal, ESL Specialist and Title VII Director in diverse school district settings, all with high English Language Learner student populations. Carmella’s passion is in ensuring that students of color are provided with every opportunity to succeed, in particular, with access to higher education. She also has co-presented often on the topic of women in educational leadership roles, and currently directs the Association of California School Administrator’s Superintendents Academy in Whittier, California.

Maria G. Ott, Ph.D. started a new phase in her distinguished educational career when she joined the USC Rossier School of Education in October 2012.  Maria G. Ott  served more than seven years as Superintendent of the Rowland Unified School District, leading the district through major instructional improvement initiatives and modernization of facilities.   She is nationally known for establishing partnerships with private foundations in support of Rowland Unified and its strategic plan and efforts to reach high levels of literacy and raise student achievement, placing Rowland Unified on the national stage and forefront of educational transformation movements.  Rowland Unified serves the cities of La Puente, Walnut, West Covina, City of Industry, unincorporated Valinda and unincorporated Rowland Heights. Dr. Ott was selected as Superintendent in July 2005, following a national search. Prior to joining Rowland Unified, Dr. Ott served five years as the Senior Deputy Superintendent in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), second in authority to Superintendent Roy Romer, former three-term Governor of Colorado.

At USC, Maria G. Ott, Ph.D. serves as Executive in Residence, teaching graduate level courses and participating in Rossier School of Education initiatives.  In her role at USC, Dr. Ott will draw upon her extensive experience as an educator in urban and suburban districts, including her work on cultural proficiency as detailed in her recently released book, A Culturally Proficient Society Begins in School:  Leadership for Equity, with co-authors Carmella S. Franco and Darline P. Robles.  Dr. Ott has presented to national audiences on the topic of her book and continues to contribute to the educational literature about the importance of cultural proficiency in closing achievement gaps.

Dr. Ott represents the Rossier School of Education as a member of the Greater Crenshaw Education Partnership Board (GCEP), serving as Vice-Chairperson.  In this role, Dr. Ott will assist the GCEP Board in fulfilling the partnership agreement in support of goals established for Crenshaw High School.  The GCEP partnership brings together USC, the Los Angeles Urban League, and the Bradley Foundation to address reform efforts designed to improve student academic achievement.  As an experienced Superintendent, Dr. Ott brings extensive experience to her Board responsibilities.            

Dr. Ott was recruited to serve as the educational deputy to Superintendent Romer in 2000. Dr. Ott returned to LAUSD after seven years as the Superintendent of the Little Lake City School District, serving the cities of Santa Fe Springs, Norwalk and southeastern Downey.  During her tenure, she was known for her accomplishments in improving student achievement, utilizing strategic planning to align resources to district priorities, and achieving excellence in governance with her Board.  Selected as a member of the prestigious Annenberg Superintendents’ group, she led a major reform initiative in Little Lake as a recipient of an Annenberg grant.  She is highly regarded throughout the state’s educational community for her strong leadership, her commitment to public education and her proven results working with children from diverse and multi-ethnic backgrounds.            

Maria G. Ott earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at Mount St. Mary’s College and completed her doctoral studies at the University of Southern California, majoring in Educational Policy, Planning and Administration.  Prior to her appointment as Superintendent of Little Lake, Maria Ott worked in the Los Angeles Unified School District as a teacher, principal, and central office administrator in the Office of Instruction.  Her accomplishments included improving student achievement as a principal, and national recognition for her leadership in improving educational outcomes and programs for English language learners.

Dr. Ott has earned numerous awards, including: AEOE Outstanding Administrator Award; AMAE Homenaje a la Mujer Recipient; Lamplighter in Education Recognition, Mount St. Mary’s College; Distinguished Educator, California State University, Los Angeles; Educational Leadership Award, Council of Mexican American Administrators; Hispanic Woman of the Year Award, Mexican American Opportunity Foundation; USC Rossier School of Education R.O.S.E. Award; Mount St. Mary’s Distinguished Alumni Award, and La Opinion Mujeres Destacadas Award, CABE 2009 Administrator of the Year Award.

Darline P. Robles, Ph.D., is currently a Professor of Clinical Education at the Rossier School of Education at the University of Southern California. Her primary responsibility is the development of new Masters degree program for school leadership. She recently retired from the Los Angeles County Office of Education where she served as County Superintendent of Schools for eight years. As the top education leader of the nation's most populous and diverse county, she ensured the financial and academic stability of 80 school districts that serve more than two million preschool and school age children. She was the first woman and Latina to be named Superintendent of the Los Angeles County Office of Education in 2002. Prior to being named superintendent of LACOE, Dr. Robles was the chief of the Salt Lake City School District for close to eight years, where she was recognized for raising student achievement, significantly reducing the drop-out rate and securing vital resources for needy schools. Earlier, as Superintendent of the Montebello Unified School District, she saved the district from a state take-over by returning it to financial stability within two years. A native Californian, she began her 30 year plus education career as an intern at Los Padrinos Juvinile Hall at LACOE, as a teacher in Montebello, coordinator of bilingual and bicultural education and as an elementary and intermediate school principal and assistant superintendent.

About the Author
Kathleen Odell Korgen, PhD, is Professor of Sociology at William Paterson University in Wayne, New Jersey. Her primary areas of specialization are race relations, racial identity, and public sociology. She has conducted trainings in corporate and campus settings on issues of diversity.

Dr. Korgen’s published work on race relations and racial identity includes Crossing the Racial Divide: Close Friendships Between Black and White Americans (2002) and From Black to Biracial: Transforming Racial Identity Among Americans (1998, 1999).

Raised in Massachusetts, Dr. Korgen now lives in Montclair, New Jersey, with her husband, Jeff; daughters Julie and Jessica; and her mother, Patricia.
