Excellent Resource and Handbook for Faculty Development

Written in accessible language with helpful resources and clear examples, Transformative Professional Learning: A System to Enhance Teacher and Student Motivation by Margery Ginsberg advances professional learning for teachers to a higher level. This is a book which takes educators beyond a workshop model of faculty development, leading teachers through a series of connected cycles of learning that are relevant to their practice, to their school, and that can deeply involve them in new learning and collaboration.
The book uses authentic examples of how teachers can prepare, conduct, and reflect upon what their own eyes and ears tell them, trusting them to come forward with ideas and teaching strategies that are motivating to students from many different backgrounds. One of the first ideas in the book is "shadowing students," where through the simple act of following a student through a school day teachers can find insights about what truly motivates students in their varying classes. Having tried this method myself, I was amazed by how shadowing stimulated my thinking.
There are also other cycles of learning that can build upon each other or stand alone. These include home visits, collaborative lesson design, and using and analyzing data with teachers, family members, students, and community members. Because the examples and materials demonstrate how educators are implementing these methods successfully, readers can have more confidence in the processes the author advocates.
For someone such as me, who believes all students are motivated and that respecting cultural diversity plays a central role in motivation, I appreciate that this book never steps away from that understanding. It is also a convincing text in the sense that what educators are asked to do, parallels the enhancement of their intrinsic motivation just as it would students. Teachers' perspectives and organizational culture are in the foreground, not the background of this approach to professional learning. They can learn about culturally responsive teaching from their viewpoint, not the one of a so called "expert."
Transformative learning is learning which significantly changes an adults' view of something that matters in their lives, in this case their students, students' families, and their school community. Each cycle of learning encourages seeing students more keenly and more authentically, offering realistic cues for ideas to engage them in learning. The methods in this book trust teachers to collaborate with each other and with every method, there is guidance for putting new ideas into practice.
Final comment: In plain words, as a professional staff developer, I am looking forward to using this book as a resource and guide throughout the coming year!
