A concise, hands-on, and experiential text that helps readers understand
and apply theory in counseling and psychotherapy
Through a unique approach that makes understanding theories in counseling and psychotherapy fun, stimulating, and personally meaningful, this fully updated Second Edition helps students comprehend the various and complex theories, apply the material to their own lives (through the use of the reflective exercises in every chapter) and internalize the content of the course. The book's three-part structure includes an introductory section that provides the background necessary for understanding the theories, a middle section that discusses the main theory "families," and a final section that focuses on synthesis and application. Throughout the text, the authors seek to surprise readers with the best of the past, excite them with the vitality of the present, and prepare them for their futures as therapists.

Review
“The personal touch of the authors view point was amazing. I also liked the 'Voices from the field' and 'Voices from the past' - so often students don't have access to the original source or current practitioners. This book was much more engaging than traditional theories texts and my students actually read it and enjoyed it.” (Melody Whiddon, Ph.D.)

A must-have!
By Elizabeth Johnson
This text was assigned as a required textbook in one of my graduate social work courses, which I rented at first but have now ended up simply purchasing because it has just been so helpful in my direct practice of the social work field.
Clearly written and very engaging, it is like no other textbook I have ever used before. I know I will continue to use this throughout my social work career.
I definitely recommend every clinical psychology, counseling, and social work student to buy this book.

Lovely Read
By MikeMo
I really enjoy reading this book. I have it for a class this semester and it has turned into one of my favorite textbooks. It's an easy read and presents in-depth theories in an accessible format. It's as if one of my friends wrote the book instead of some stuffy professor. I will keep this on a bookshelf for years after this class, which I can't say for many other textbooks!
