About the Author
Kenneth Allan received his PhD in sociology from the University of California, Riverside (1995), and is currently professor of Sociology at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG). Before moving to UNCG, he directed the Teaching Assistant Development Program at the University of California, Riverside, and coedited Training Teaching Assistants, 2nd Edition (1997), published by the American Sociological Association. In addition to teaching classical and contemporary theory at UNCG, Allan also supervised UNCG’s sociology iSchool program, which offered online introduction to sociology classes to high school students across North Carolina, has designed several online courses for both the college and department, and has regularly taught graduate pedagogy courses. Allan’s research areas include theory, culture, and the self. He has authored several works in the area of theory, including multiple textbooks covering classical and contemporary theory, as well as The Meaning of Culture: Moving the Postmodern Critique Forward, and A Primer in Social and Sociological Theory: Toward a Sociology of Citizenship. His current projects include a social history of American individualism, a sociological analysis of consciousness and self, as well as a novel based in early 20th century American life.

Great for a school textbook!

Contemporary social theory is my class. Yeah, you almost fall asleep just thinking about it, right? Well since you have to read a textbook no matter what, this one might as well be it. Each chapter is summarized in a clear amd concise way. There are also study suggestions such as sample questions and exercises. I can't say that I have done, or will do, any of those, but a more disciplined student might.....and I'm sure they would be very helpful!

i got it used and it was still a bit pricey and no i didnt check out the other sites like chegg, i think thats what its called. this book did take awhile to get here but again i got it used and sticky.

Richard Allen is an international consultant with more than 25 years experience coaching trainers and educators. Cofounder and president of Education Illustrated, he has taken the TrainSmart strategies beyond the United States and Canada to such diverse countries as the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Singapore, Brunei, Russia, Jordan, and Brazil. Allen is also a popular keynote speaker at international conferences, and he facilitates moti­vational and teambuilding workshops.

Allen started his educational career as a high school math and drama teacher. About the Author

Dr. Deborah K. Padgett is widely known for her expertise in qualitative and mixed methods including this third edition and a companion text Qualitative and Mixed Methods in Public Health (Sage, 2012). She is first author of Housing First: Ending Homelessness, Transforming Systems and Changing Lives (Oxford University Press, 2015) and has published extensively on mental health needs and service use of homeless adults and other underserved populations. Dr. Padgett was Principal Investigator on two NIMH-funded R01 grants, both qualitative studies of engagement and recovery among formerly homeless adults in supportive housing in New York City.  She served as President of the Society for Social Work and Research (SSWR), culminating in the establishment of the SSWR "Deborah K. Padgett Early Career Award" in recognition of her contributions. She is a member of the American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare (AASWSW) and serves on its Board. In 2013, Dr. Padgett received New York University’s Distinguished Teaching Award.

Too expensive

To me, this book is a joke. I'm currently taking a graduate course in qualitative methods offered in the public health department at my university and this is the text we are using. My first complaint, if you will, is that this text is far too expensive for what it is. In my opinion, its worth half of the list price, at best.

My overall opinion of the text is that it is very shallow. I could see this book being used in an undergraduate course where students had absolutely no prior experience with any qualitative research. If you have any background at all in qualitative research/methods/analysis, don't waste your time. The chapter on ethical issues is nothing that hasn't been said before by hundreds of other authors, and should be common sense to pretty much all researchers. Chapter 6 "Entering the Field and Conducting Observation" and Chapter 7 "Interviewing and Use of Documents" are likely to be covered in any general methods class, and again don't add anything special that most researchers, or graduate students, probably don't know already.

I also have a big issue with Chapter 8 "Data Analysis and Interpretation". This chapter spends far too much space discussing the use of qualitative data management/analysis software packages. The book was published in 2012, so I have the feeling that most people would not find it shocking that software is now used to analyze qualitative data. Also, Padgett spends maybe a solid fifteen pages on coding data, and most of this is geared towards grounded theory methods (and even in her discussion about that she never makes it clear to the reader which form of GTM she is speaking of). Since she repeatedly jumps between qualitative methods (GTM, , ethnography, case studies, phenomenological research, etc), she really leaves the reader wondering how analysis is carried out throughout the methods she discusses.

Nonetheless, my suggestion would be to avoid this text and to refer to more classic scholars in the particular area you are interested in working from (for example, GTM see works by Glaser, Glaser & Strauss, Strauss & Corbin, and Charmaz).

About the Author

Matthew Lippman is Professor Emeritus at the University of Illinois at Chicago and has taught criminal law and criminal procedure in the Department of Criminology, Law and Justice  for more than thirty years. He has also taught courses on civil liberties, law and society, and terrorism and teaches international criminal law at John Marshall Law School in Chicago. He earned a doctorate in Political Science from Northwestern University, a Master of Law from Harvard Law School, and is a member of the Pennsylvania Bar. He has been voted by the graduating seniors at UIC to receive the Silver Circle Award for outstanding teaching on six separate occasions and has also received the UIC Flame Award from the University of Illinois Alumni Association, as well as the Excellence in Teaching Award, Teaching Recognition (Portfolio) Award, and Honors College Fellow of the Year Award. The university chapter of Alpha Phi Sigma, the criminal justice honors society, named him “criminal justice professor of the year” on three occasions.  In 2008, he was recognized as College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Master Teacher.  He was honored by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, which named him Commencement Marshal at the May 2012 graduation.  Professor Lippman  is also recognized in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.

 

Professor Lippman is author of one hundred articles and author or co-author of two books. These publications focus on criminal law and criminal procedure, international human rights, and comparative law. He also is author of five other Sage volumes, Contemporary Criminal Law Concepts, Cases, and Controversies (4th ed. 2016) Criminal Procedure (3nd ed. 2017),  Essential Criminal Law (2nd ed. 2017),  Law and Society (2015) and Criminal Evidence (2016).  His work is cited in hundreds of academic publications and by domestic and international courts and organizations. He has also served on legal teams appearing before the International Court of Justice in the Hague, has testified as an expert witness on international law before numerous state and federal courts, and has consulted with both private organizations and branches of the U.S. government. Professor Lippman regularly appears as a radio and television commentator and is frequently quoted in leading newspapers. He served in every major administrative position in the  Department of Criminology, Law and Justice including Department Head and Director of Undergraduate Studies and Director of Graduate Studies.

I hate this book

Attempting to brief the cases in this book in mind-numbing. The amount of absolutely extraneous information, jumping back and forth between points, and unclear lower court decisions made briefing cases using just this book impossible. If it weren't for more competent writers on Wikipedia, I would have certainly failed criminal procedure. The same information can be found in many other resources. If you can help it, please don't buy this book.

About the Author

Jason W. Osborne is Associate Provost and Dean of the Graduate School at Clemson University in Clemson, South Carolina.  He is also Professor of Applied Statistics in the Department of Mathematical Sciences, with a secondary appointment in Public Health Science.  He teaches and publishes on "best practices" in quantitative and applied research methods. He has served as evaluator or consultant on projects in public education (K-12), instructional technology, higher education, nursing and health care, medicine and medical training, epidemiology, business and marketing, and jury selection in death penalty cases. He served as founding editor of Frontiers in Quantitative Psychology and Measurement and has been on the editorial boards of several other journals (such as Practical Assessment, Research, and Evaluation). Jason also publishes on identification with academics (how a student's self-concept impacts motivation to succeed in academics) and on issues related to social justice and diversity (such as Stereotype Threat). Worthwhile book with a misleading title

Well, it cost me $4 in postage to discover that "Best practices in data cleaning" is not about data cleaning, but mostly about the challenges of working with survey data. The author acknowledges upfront that his "data cleaning" includes activities undertaken both before and after data collection, and his first topic, power and sample size analysis, drives the point home. Among the other topics, outlier detection alone is what I would call data cleaning; handling of missing data and normalizing transformations - maybe.

Despite the middling rating, I like the book. Given the abundant evidence of lacking statistical expertise among social-sciences researchers - take the references cited here, or in "Understanding the new statistics" by Geoff Cumming - any educational effort is welcome, especially when delivered with an accessible, friendly writing style.

The misgivings come from the titular misnomer - SAGE, I want my $4 back - and, secondly, dissatisfaction with the statistics on display. I am not talking about the introductory nature of discussion - meaning that you will need to consult other references to understand how a particular method, and how it can be implemented - but about the suspicion that presented repertoire is a bit behind the curve. Consider "Data analysis using regression and multilevel/hierarchical models" by Gelman and Hill, for example - it's hard to believe that "Best practices in data cleaning" is more recent. R, simulation-based methods, "robust" or non-parametric methods, "exact" tests - absent or mentioned in a few words. ("Winsorizing", an antique "robust" method, is there, misspelled, and there is a simulation done in SPSS - filling four pages (!) with random numbers. It all feels very 1990s).

Overall, I appreciate "Best practices in data cleaning" as an accessible "awareness-builder" offering practical advice and many useful references - while flagging some reservations about said advice, or rather about what is left unsaid. Applied researchers in psychometrics should take a look. Page visitors looking for a book about data cleaning - check out "Data quality assessment" by Arkady Maydanchik.

PS. Normalizing transformations are given a lot of space in the book, and I wonder if the discussion is entirely accurate. On page 90, for example, the author seems to suggest that normality of data is a requirement of conventional statistical tests. I'd say that things are more nuanced - the central-limit theorem gets one asymptotic normality, but one deals with finite, and often small, samples - and note that since one is not always going to work in univariate setting (e.g, drawing histograms instead of running regressions), it's helpful to point out the difference between conditional and unconditional normality.

Comprehensive and logical

Although I have had a great deal of training associated with the process of setting up and reviewing data collection and analysis I had been away from the field for several years, and recent work required that I consult prior to beginning a new project. This book made the process of getting back up to speed enjoyable. I was very pleased by the step-by-step explanations provided, and found the book to be an excellent resource.

About the Author

C. Augustus “Gus” Martin is a Professor of Criminal Justice Administration at California State University, Dominguez Hills, where he regularly teaches a course on the subject of terrorism and extremism. He has also served as Associate Vice President for Human Resources Management, Acting Associate Dean of the College of Business Administration and Public Policy, Associate Vice President for Faculty Affairs, and Chair of the Department of Public Administration & Public Policy. He began his academic career as a member of the faculty of the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs, University of Pittsburgh, where he was an Administration of Justice professor. His current research and professional interests are terrorism and extremism, homeland security, administration of justice, and juvenile justice.

 

Dr. Martin is author of a number of books on the subjects of terrorism and homeland security, including Understanding Homeland Security (SAGE, 2016); Essentials of Terrorism: Concepts and Controversies (2016); Understanding Terrorism: Challenges, Perspectives, and Issues (SAGE, 2015); The SAGE Encyclopedia of Terrorism, Second Edition (SAGE, 2011); Terrorism and Homeland Security (SAGE, 2011); and The New Era of Terrorism: Selected Readings (SAGE, 2004). He is also author of Juvenile Justice: Process and Systems (SAGE, 2005).

 

Prior to joining academia, Dr. Martin served as Managing Attorney for the Fair Housing Partnership of Greater Pittsburgh, where he was also director of a program created under a federal consent decree to desegregate public and assisted housing. He was also Special Counsel to the Attorney General of the U.S. Virgin Islands on the island of St. Thomas. As Special Counsel, he occupied a personal and confidential position in the central office of the Department of Justice; sat as hearing officer for disciplinary hearings and departmental grievances; served as chair of the Drug Policy Committee; served as liaison to the intergovernmental Law Enforcement Coordinating Committee as well as to the Narcotics Strike Force; and provided daily legal and policy advice to the Attorney General. Prior to serving as Special Counsel, he was a “floor” Legislative Assistant to Congressman Charles B. Rangel of New York. As Legislative Assistant, he researched, evaluated and drafted legislation in areas of foreign policy, foreign aid, human rights, housing, education, social services, and poverty; he also drafted House floor statements, Congressional Record inserts, press releases, and news articles; and he composed speeches, briefing materials, and legislative correspondence.

Very good Textbook

I recommend this book and intend to incorporate it into my courses. It provides an engaging look on modern terrorism, explains basic concepts and provides students with many examples to illustrate trends, developments and scope of modern terror. The illustrations, photos and clear writing make it very accessible to students.
