An Interdisciplinary Approach

Criminal Law provides students with an integrated framework for understanding the U.S. criminal justice system with a diverse and inclusive interdisciplinary approach and thematic focus. Authors Katheryn Russell-Brown and Angela J. Davis go beyond the law and decisions in court cases to consider and integrate issues of race, gender, and socio-economic status with their discussion of criminal law. Material from the social sciences is incorporated to highlight the intersection between criminal law and key social issues. Case excerpts and detailed case summaries, used to highlight important principles of criminal law, are featured throughout the text. The coverage is conceptual and practical, showing students how the criminal law applies in the “real world”—not just within the pages of a textbook.

Review
“It has an engaging style and includes great examples to help students understand concepts. The authors have done a fine job in making an often ‘dry’ subject exciting for the student.” (Robert Lockwood)

“Each of the authors has a fascinating legal background, and clearly knows their area of the law.”  (Kathleen Nicolaides, JD)

“Good use of cases for facilitation of discussion as well as resources for the student as they continue their academic journey...Great work!” (Pamela Chambers)

“It is an excellent book”   (Barry R. Langford)

“It was a good read, it covered all the necessary topics with great explanation.” (Richard Colangelo)

“It is structured very similarly to how I like to teach my course. I like it much better than my current text as it works on the student’s analytical skills.” (Becky Kohler da Cruz)

“The authors have done a good job of using hypothetical problems, cases, and discussion questions to involve students in the learning process. They have presented the material in a clear and understandable fashion for senior level students.” (Robert Lockwood)

“The liberal use of case law to illustrate the concepts, which were clearly described, really adds to the value of this text.” (Tim Robicheaux)

While they had some good things to say the authos tended to reiterate the same things over and over. This is one of a series, might have been better to do one good book. They seemed to be repeating themselves to fill the pages.

Review
“I can see this book becoming a very important and seminal piece in mathematics instruction and teaching practice. It allows the instructor to take a proactive and scaffolded approach for teaching students experiencing difficulties in mathematics, and it builds upon the mathematical knowledge of the teacher." (Cathy Patterson, Assistant Principal 2009-12-02)

“This book is a must-have for anyone working to remediate students struggling with math. It gets into the types of mistakes/misconceptions students have and gives multiple ways to correct them. It is also a great resource for teachers who need a stronger math background." (Donna Adkins, First-Grade Teacher 2009-12-02)

"Highly recommended for all K-8 teachers to help all students learn math and be successful! Spangler captures the essence of teaching mathematics to all children through the Response to Intervention focus. This is a very practical and useful math resource for all teachers, including general education teachers as well as special educators." (Edna F. Bazik, Mathematics Education Program Coordinator 2009-12-07)

“The nuts-and-bolts approach to assessment and error analysis make this a real tool for everyday use in real classrooms." (Judith A. Filkins, K-8 Math Curriculum Coordinator 2009-12-02)

“The comprehensive examples and explanations are exemplary. The book contains a goldmine of information, strategies, and interventions. Most teachers do not have error analysis on their radar―they should, as it is critical for informing instruction and facilitating student learning.” (Katharine Olson, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment 2009-12-02)

"A wonderful addition to any professional library. All too often when a student makes a computational error, the prescribed remediation is further drilling. Based on recognized cognitive research, this book provides a model that helps the teacher analyze student work for error patterns and then provide timely, targeted, and meaningful intervention. This book provides well-organized, comprehensive strategies to meet the learning needs of all students." (Hope Martin, Author/Consultant 2009-12-14)

"This well-designed handbook is for educators whose students struggle with arithmetic operations. It offers valuable assistance to tutors, special educators, and classroom teachers." (Sally Moomaw Teaching Children Mathematics Magazine, October 2012 2012-10-03)

A good overview
By Jamie
This book gives a great overview of social psychology as applied to many different areas e.g. classroom, culture, diversity, workplace, education, prison, etc.
I would prefer that it went more in depth in the different areas, and offered more empirical evidence of the different concepts. It is easy to read and well organized, but sometimes it feels as though the content is more from the author's own experience and not a lot of research was done. I'm sure that is not the case, but it comes off as though all the evidence in support of the different concepts and theories is anecdotal rather than empirical.

Once again, it seems like a good overview - but if you really want to go in depth in the study of applied social psychology, I would recommend utilizing this along with supplemental materials.

The text is okay. I found it to be dry for reading and I'm a Psych major. I found it to be not really worth the value that I paid for.

Simple ideas that can be used by all levels!
By jonm
I read this book for a training I needed. I started as a skeptic, "OK, I'm never going to use this in the classroom."

I am happy to be wrong. The book contains simple ideas that can be used by all age levels. All 20 strategies can be incorporated into lessons you already use.

The book helped me to remember what fun a classroom can be and how I prefer to learn. I've incorporated the ideas in my high school classroom and love it!
