About the Author

Curt R. Bartol was a college professor for more than 30 years, teaching a wide variety of both undergraduate and graduate courses, including Biopsychology, Criminal Behavior, Juvenile Delinquency, Introduction to Forensic Psychology, Social Psychology, and Psychology and Law. He earned his PhD in personality/social psychology from Northern Illinois University in 1972. He was instrumental in creating and launching Castleton State College’s graduate program in forensic psychology and served as its director for 6 years. As a licensed clinical psychologist, he has been a consulting police psychologist to local, municipal, state, and federal law enforcement agencies for over 25 years. In addition to editing Current Perspectives, he has written Introduction to Forensic Psychology (forthcoming in its 4th edition), Criminal Behavior: A Psychosocial Approach (now in its 10th ed.), Juvenile Delinquency and Antisocial Behavior: A Developmental Perspective (3rd ed.), Criminal and Behavioral Profiling, and Psychology and Law (4th ed.). 

Anne M. Bartol earned an MA and a PhD in criminal justice from State University of New York at Albany. She also holds an MA in journalism from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. She taught criminal justice, sociology, and journalism courses over a 20-year college teaching career and has worked as a journalist and a social worker in child and adolescent protective services In addition to editing Current Perspectives, she has co-authored Introduction to Forensic Psychology, Juvenile Delinquency, Psychology and Law, and Criminal Behavior. She has served as book review editor and managing editor of Criminal Justice and Behavior and has published articles on women and criminal justice, rural courts, and the history of forensic psychology.

About the Author

Arthur Asa Berger is Professor Emeritus of Broadcast and Electronic Communication Arts at San Francisco State University, where he taught between 1965 and 2003. He has published more than 100 articles, numerous book reviews, and more than 60 books. Among his latest books are the third edition of Media and Communication Research Methods: An Introduction to Qualitative and Quantitative Approaches (2013), The Academic Writer’s Toolkit: A User’s Manual (2008), What Objects Mean: An Introduction to Material Culture (2009), Bali Tourism (2013), Tourism in Japan: An Ethno-Semiotic Analysis (2010), The Culture Theorist’s Book of Quotations (2010), and The Objects of Our Affection: Semiotics and Consumer Culture (2010). He has also written a number of academic mysteries such as Durkheim is Dead: Sherlock Holmes is Introduced to Sociological Theory (2003) and Mistake in Identity: A Cultural Studies Murder Mystery (2005). His books have been translated into eight languages and thirteen of his books have been translated into Chinese.

About the Author

C. Augustus “Gus” Martin is a Professor of Criminal Justice Administration at California State University, Dominguez Hills, where he regularly teaches a course on the subject of terrorism and extremism. He has also served as Associate Vice President for Human Resources Management, Acting Associate Dean of the College of Business Administration and Public Policy, Associate Vice President for Faculty Affairs, and Chair of the Department of Public Administration & Public Policy. He began his academic career as a member of the faculty of the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs, University of Pittsburgh, where he was an Administration of Justice professor. His current research and professional interests are terrorism and extremism, homeland security, administration of justice, and juvenile justice.

 

Dr. Martin is author of a number of books on the subjects of terrorism and homeland security, including Understanding Homeland Security (SAGE, 2016); Essentials of Terrorism: Concepts and Controversies (2016); Understanding Terrorism: Challenges, Perspectives, and Issues (SAGE, 2015); The SAGE Encyclopedia of Terrorism, Second Edition (SAGE, 2011); Terrorism and Homeland Security (SAGE, 2011); and The New Era of Terrorism: Selected Readings (SAGE, 2004). He is also author of Juvenile Justice: Process and Systems (SAGE, 2005).

 

Prior to joining academia, Dr. Martin served as Managing Attorney for the Fair Housing Partnership of Greater Pittsburgh, where he was also director of a program created under a federal consent decree to desegregate public and assisted housing. He was also Special Counsel to the Attorney General of the U.S. Virgin Islands on the island of St. Thomas. As Special Counsel, he occupied a personal and confidential position in the central office of the Department of Justice; sat as hearing officer for disciplinary hearings and departmental grievances; served as chair of the Drug Policy Committee; served as liaison to the intergovernmental Law Enforcement Coordinating Committee as well as to the Narcotics Strike Force; and provided daily legal and policy advice to the Attorney General. Prior to serving as Special Counsel, he was a “floor” Legislative Assistant to Congressman Charles B. Rangel of New York. As Legislative Assistant, he researched, evaluated and drafted legislation in areas of foreign policy, foreign aid, human rights, housing, education, social services, and poverty; he also drafted House floor statements, Congressional Record inserts, press releases, and news articles; and he composed speeches, briefing materials, and legislative correspondence.

Daniel R. Venables is founder and executive director of the Center for Authentic PLCs, a research and consulting firm dedicated to assisting schools build and sustain authentic Professional Learning Communities. Drawbacks mar an otherwise commendable read

Definitions of teaching in educational settings are varied. Some mention the imparting of knowledge and skills, and others make reference to the promotion of learning, employing the most effective teaching and learning strategies, and perhaps even knowing how to assess what learners know, understand and can do. Rarely, however, do definitions of teaching include learning and knowing how to work effectively and efficiently with other teachers. This is a pity because given contemporary requirements to maximise students' scores on high-stakes tests, be engaging, and undertake non-curricula and administrative duties willingly, teachers surely need all the encouragement and reassurance they can get. Well-reasoned, widely applicable and considered solutions are needed urgently.

Daniel Venables' "The practice of authentic PLCs: A guide to effective teacher teams" consists of seven chapters organized into three main sections: (i) The Context for Authentic PLCs, (ii) The Essential Tasks of Authentic PLCs and (iii) Coaching Authentic PLCs. There is also a coach's appendix that features 18 protocols and activities for PLCs to use as their needs determine.

The first part deals with the business of PLCs--Professional Learning Communities--and how to get them started. PLCs have a certain number of characteristics and functions, and Venables suggests three essential tasks for them: (i) looking at student and teacher work, (ii) designing quality common formative assessments and (iii) reviewing and responding to data.

It's one thing to put a group of teachers together and call them a professional learning community, but it is entirely another thing for them to work "authentically".

Authentic PLCs start with a strong foundation of teamwork and collaboration. Piecing together information from the entire text, collaborative effort seems to involve and require: learning, mutual trust, honesty, listening, flexibility, interest, involvement, reflection, deep thought, truth, interdependence, problem-solving, shared experiences, dialogue, knowledge building, review, planning, risk-taking, growth, relationships, open-mindedness, hard work, common vision, no personal agendas, proactivity, genuineness, diversity, pluralism, seriousness, scholarly discussion, accountability, respect, structure, principles, strategies, purposefulness, dynamism, candour, rigor, integrity, safety, protection, exploration, effectiveness, efficiency, feedback, practice, clarity, challenge, inquisitiveness, analysis, responsibility, focus, active listening, responsiveness, contributions, courage, and no hard feelings. Clearly, then, "... PLCs are not so much a thing as they are a culture. They are a way of thinking" (p. 12).

The second part outlines the essential tasks of authentic PLCs in detail. In Chapter 3, we learn that "... feedback is the lifeblood of nearly every aspect of PLC work. It is the traction needed under the slippery wheel of collaboration (p. 46)." To help teachers get into the habit of offering critical feedback to one another, Venables explains the differences between warm and cool feedback, and classifies questions into three types: clarifying, probing and framing (pp. 51-55). Chapter 4 covers the design of quality formative assessments. This includes: discussing essential learning outcomes (ELOs), and unpacking and selecting assessment standards. The material of this chapter is drawn exclusively from the United States and will make most sense to "educators operating in the post-NCLB [No Child Left Behind] world of state assessments ... (p. 77). Chapter 5 looks at how PLCs can review and respond to data. Interestingly, Venables argues that, "... the value of any particular type of data as a source of information for identifying the problem of practice and improving instruction is proportional to the frequency with which the data type is collected. That is, the shorter the time intervals between `data harvests,' the more opportunities teachers have to adjust their instruction and therefore the more useful it is. Schools must abandon end-of-year data as the principle data source and must instead be in the habit of constantly reviewing available data as they become available throughout the school year (p. 95)." These are heady yet important considerations for practitioners and school administrators alike.

The third and final part is dedicated to coaching authentic PLCs. Notably, Chapter 7--Troubleshooting Common Obstacles--outlines how to address reluctant and resistant teachers and counsels coaches not to shy away from asking hard questions; for example, Tell me why you think that? How will this help students? (p. 131)

In sum, this book includes many useful procedures and strategies for uniting teachers in a set of common purposes and deserves to be in any serious and self-respecting school library, faculty office or staffroom. However, readers outside of the United States are likely to be alienated by some of the examples given and the community metaphor used. They may also have different notions about what constitutes effectiveness in teaching and teacher teams, and may not agree with the priorities and conditions addressed in the second, central, part of book. These drawbacks mar an otherwise commendable read in my opinion.

This is a quick read and easy to implement. It gives step to step protocols for getting the most out of your PLCs and not adding items to already full plates. This will encourage you to formulate PLCs and encourage your teachers in getting the most out of their time and preparation.

About the Author

Peter Kivisto is Richard A. Swanson Professor of Social Thought and Chair of Sociology, Anthropology and Social Welfare at Augustana College and Finland Distinguished Professor at the University of Turku. His current research involves a collaborative project on multiculturalism with colleagues in Finland. His interests include immigration, social integration, citizenship, and religion. Among his recent books are Key Ideas in Sociology (2011), Illuminating Social Life (2011); Beyond a Border: The Causes and Consequences of Contemporary Immigration (2010, with Thomas Faist); Citizenship: Discourse, Theory and Transnational Prospects (2007, with Thomas Faist); and Intersecting Inequalities (2007, with Elizabeth Hartung). He serves on the editorial boards of Contexts, Ethnic and Racial Studies, Journal of Intercultural Studies, and on the Publication Committee for Sociology of Religion.

Long since outdated

Although marketed as recently updated, the actual content of this book remains decidedly outdated. Most of the references are 1995 or before, likely the last time that Kivisto devoted any serious time to research it. I must give him credit though; once he finds material that sells, he stays with it, essentially unchanged, for decades. Like another book of his sent to me recently by the publisher, this book follows Kivisto's pattern. He very rarely cites primary material, and instead, relies on secondary references, sometimes even three or four times removed from the source. He also carefully avoids contemporary issues or examples. One wonders if he ever bothered to read the scholars he claims to represent.

Moreover, the title ostensibly concerns "Key Ideas in Sociology," but again, the book studiously avoids anything complex or controversial. Instead, it remains firmly in past decades, "key debates of the mid-twentieth century" would be more accurate. His knowledge of sociology is mired 30-50 years ago. even his discussion of nineteenth century theorists is out of historical context, and instead treated as part of Sociology, circa 1950-1985.

Unfortunately, this innocuous approach to Sociology is a major reason why the discipline has become increasingly irrelevant to the real world. If the goal is to teach an utterly conventional course, this book would serve well in that capacity. If the goal is to teach something interesting and innovative, one should look elsewhere.

About the Author

W. Timothy Coombs (PhD, Public Affairs and Issues Management, Purdue University) is a professor in the Nicholson School of Communication at the University of Central Florida. His books include Applied Crisis Communication and Crisis Management: Cases and Exercises, Code Red in the Boardroom,and, with Sherry Holladay, Managing Corporate Social Responsibility, PR Strategy and Application, and The Handbook of Crisis Communication.  His crisis communication research was awarded the 2002 Jackson, Jackson & Wagner Behavioral Science Prize from the Public Relations Society of America. Dr. Coombs has published more than 40 research articles, most focusing on crisis communication, as well as more than 30 book chapters on the subject. He has worked with consulting firms in the U.S. and Europe on ways to improve crisis communication efforts for their clients, and has been invited by governments and businesses around the world to present his ideas and insights into crisis communication.

The best guide to crisis management

As both a student and professional of crisis management and communication, I have read countless articles and books on the topic. After a while, they all start to sound alike, and you can begin to wonder whether there's really anything new and insightful out there.
This book is it.
The author compiles research from a vast number of fields, as well as adding some of his own analysis resulting from a distinguished professional and academic career. The final product is the best "holistic" guide to crisis management I've ever read. Although it is a slim volume, it took me a couple of weeks to read, take notes, and reflect on the contents--it's that densely packed with ideas and information.
I personally found that it re-sparked my excitement and enthusiasm for this complex, challenging field.

My favorite crisis management reference so far

In the past six months I've read a few books on crisis management and this is my favorite. Coombs put together a concise book that is well organized, easy to read, and brimming with useful information. He used the three-phase (pre-crisis, crisis, post-crisis) model as a foundation after comparing it with other more robust models.

Because this was published recently (2012), the examples were current and memorable. As much as I dig the Tylenol/cyanide case study, it's nice to learn from events that have happened in the past few years.

I originally purchased this as a required text for graduate school but have used it as much, if not more, at work in building a crisis management plan from scratch. For someone who needs a grip on the basics, this is an appropriate tool. For a person with extensive crisis management experience, it may fall short of expectations.

This book was a great book for information on crisis management which I had to do a presentation on. It was neatly organized and super understandable. It was easy to read not like some text books! I think this would be a great book for teaching students!!

About the Author
Jeffrey D. Long, PhD, is Professor of Psychiatry in the Carver College of Medicine at the University of Iowa. He is also the Head Statistician for Neurobiological Predictors of Huntington's Disease (PREDICT-HD), a longitudinal NIH-funded study of early detection of Huntington's Disease. His undergraduate degree is from the University of California at Los Angeles, and his doctoral degree is from the University of Southern California in the area of quantitative psychology.

Wonderful!

If you are looking for an _applied_ guide to using R's lmer and the lme4 package for your repeated measures/longitudinal analyses, you are home. This book is really, really great.

I came to this text comfortable with both R and mixed models, but I have had no formal guidance using the lme4 package or its predecessor (nlme). I had a hard time finding any easily-digestible information about appropriate coding conventions for lme4. I found the free R code for this textbook online, and it was great! Then I started reading the textbook online (some portions are available for free on Google Books). At that point, I realized that I just had to have the full book in my hands. It was that useful, and very readable. I was tired of scrounging around on the R message boards. I needed one-stop shopping - and nearly everything I need is in this book. The only thing missing is a thorough discussion of assumption violations and subsequent approaches should they arise. I guess Long assumes you have thorough knowledge of how to test and correct for assumption violations in R already, which could be an issue for readers.

I am no stats or math whiz, and I don't have a thorough or fluent understanding of the inner mathy workings of mixed models or of the lme4 package, so I can't provide any critique of the text on those grounds. Hopefully someone else will provide some notes there. For what it's worth, I can say that I did some reading on the R message boards prior to purchasing this book, and nothing I've read in Long violates anything I read/skimmed by Douglas Bates or Ben Bolker (the authors of lme4). Everything in the text is also consistent with suggestions from stats-oriented professors in my department (I'm a PhD student).

Bottom line: Readable, practical guide to longitudinal analysis using lme4. Abundant R code. Understandable, clear use of sample data.

would like to understand more about how to handle model comparisons ...

From the perspective of someone learning mixed models in regards with lm4. Really wanted to understand plotting results of predicted models in original units when DV and time variable are transformed. Couldn't find discussion of how to interpret coefficients from transformation. Also, would like to understand more about how to handle model comparisons when AIC and BIC don't agree. Still found book informative and pretty easy to read. Having explanations of R script very important. Note: I had to return electronic copy because script examples were too small to read and there was no way to fix. Hard copy was fine. Book website could have more resources IMO.

Excellent Book: Highly Recommended

Very good book with detailed explanations in handling longitudinal data analysis using R.
Pros:
1. Excellent number of worked examples.
2. The explanations for the worked examples were first rate. You could easily use this book for self study.

Cons:
I really can't think of anything that I found wrong or bad about the book.

Summary
I'd recommend this book unconditionally. Do not be put off by the fact that "behavioral science" is in the title, if you plan to use it in another discipline. The explanations for model designs are first rate and can be adapted anywhere.
