About the Author
Michael Mayerfeld Bell is Professor of Community and Environmental Sociology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. For his day job, he is principally an environmental sociologist and a social theorist, focusing on dialogics, the sociology of nature, and social justice. These concerns for the world have led him to studies of agroecology, the body, community, consumption, culture, development, food, democracy, economic sociology, gender, inequality, participation, place, politics, rurality, the sociology of music, and more. He is also a part-time composer of grassroots and classical music, and a mandolinist, guitarist, and singer.

Thoughtful, Innovative, Compelling, Empassioned

Michael Bell in this book takes an entirely new approach to introducing students to the field of environmental sociology. Yes there are other texts out there, and certainly they do a better job of reviewing all the research and thought that has gone before them. Some are much more encyclopedic, and end up reading like Sears Catalogues. However for its readablility and humanist treatment of this subject, Bell's stands alone.
Bell's humanities background shows in his wide-ranging examples from Asian, Classical and Enlightenment thinking, which shows readers how the questions currently being chewed on by environmental sociologists (such as what is "natural," why our culture and economic system drive us to destroy the environment) are truly age-old. This also makes the book extremely interesting for faculty and other readers, as well as students.
However what I like the best about this book is how beautifully and thoughtfully written it is. Bell's major points are carefully developed, and build upon each other beautifully. He speaks of his own life-choices, and he takes stands on issues. To me these make this book more compelling than text-book that seek to be catalogues of all the issues. Those have a place too, but students first need to care about the issues and the field, and feel as if something can be done about our pressing environmental problems.
I believe the other reviewer may be an outlier: Hundreds of my students over the past four years have given this book the thumbs up (and they certainly gave other books the thumbs down). Judge this book yourself, it is worth it.

Highly recommended

I highly recommend this book as an introduction to environmental sociology. My students say they like Bell's writing style, as it is accessible and he makes confusing concepts easy to understand. I like the way he places individual choices and decisions in a social context so that students can see the influences of social structures (the built environment, our time constraints and our need for social status) on the choices and decisions of individuals. In the 2004 edition, there is also a section on environmental justice, an important topic which is rarely covered adequately in environmental sociology textbooks.

Class reading

I had to buy this book for an Environmental Sociology course I signed up for and over-all it is a very good book. Its general idea is to make you think about environmental problems in different way, as well as give you some history on the concept. The reading is rather easy and not too dense as some college books are so it should be accessible to anyone who is in/has graduated high school. I will be honest and say that I did most of the reading from this book on my own as the professor I had for the course did not use it as much as I had hoped for (considering how much I paid for it anyways). Overall it is a good beginners book into environmental/social issues.

About the Author

Stephen G. Tibbetts, currently a Professor at California State University, San Bernardino, has been pursuing an understanding of criminal offending for over the past two decades. He has attempted to discover the extent to which individuals’ inherent dispositions and attitudinal traits contribute to their offending decisions, especially in relation to other factors, such as demographic, developmental, and situational factors. Dr. Tibbetts’ research has included work on the differences between men and women in their decisions to commit deviant behavior, as well as their perceptions of risk and consequences of getting caught. His additional research interests include the effects of perinatal disorders as an influence in future criminality, the etiology of white-collar crime, and gang intervention.  Dr. Tibbetts has published nine books and more than 50 scholarly papers examining various issues in criminology. He received the 2011 Outstanding Professor Award at CSU, San Bernardino. He previously worked extensively as an Officer of the Court in providing recommendations for dispositions of numerous juvenile court cases from 1997 to 2008.

Interesting read!

My Criminological Theory lecture required this book, and I thought it would be a tedious read. However, it was actually interesting explanation of the development of theories about crimes and the criminals. I believe it was a very straightforward reading, so you won't be confused.

A solid look into criminological theories

The is a required text for a graduate level criminology course I'm currently taking. This is an elective class for me, and I haven't taken a sociology class in fifteen years.

With that said, I think this book does a good job of explaining all of the criminological theories that exist. The author provides some of his opinion as well and attempts to bridge newer and older theories alike. Our course uses this text as a basis for in-class discussion and other verbally thought provoking exercises. When paired with a good professor it can help make for a lively criminology experience.

Off-topic: I find it interesting/disturbing/humorous how this book has a copy-write date of 2012. How is that even possible?

This is a good book offering a very clear narrative. I believe it would be quite useful for students who are just starting to engage in statistical analysis. I think the strength of the book is definitely its structure – which is really good (I teaching the same order) and also the relative simplicity of explanations. I think this is a good BA level book. I also believe international MA students who have not engaged in any quantitative analysis may find it useful. I find the boxes with explanations very helpful and the illustrative pictograms make the statistical concept more visual and understandable. I would not adopt it as a core book for MA, but will include it in a list of suggested readings. The only issue I have is the relevance of the US examples to the British context where I teach. I think the irrelevance of the context might deter students from reading it.  I think I will adopt some of the visual ways (boxes and graphs) to represent stats – perhaps in my lecture slides. About the Author

Chava Frankfort-Nachmias is an Emeritus Professor of Sociology at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. She is the coauthor of Research Methods in the Social Sciences (with David Nachmias), coeditor of Sappho in the Holy Land (with Erella Shadmi) and numerous publications on ethnicity and development, urban revitalization, science and gender, and women in Israel. She was the recipient of the University of Wisconsin System teaching improvement grant on integrating race, ethnicity, and gender into the social statistics and research methods curriculum. She is also the coauthor (with Anna Leon-Guerrero) of Social Statistics for a Diverse Society.

Anna Leon-Guerrero is a professor of sociology at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington. A recipient of the university’s Faculty Excellence Award and the K. T. Tang Award for Excellence in Research, she teaches courses on statistics, sociological theory, and social problems. As a social service program evaluator and consultant, she has focused her research on welfare reform, employment strategies for the working poor, and program assessment. She is the coauthor of Social Statistics for a Diverse Society and Essentials of Social Statistics for a Diverse Society (with Chava Frankfort-Nachmias).

Good book, needs work

I purchased this book for my Social Statistics class at CU. While it was as described in the product description, their are many problems with the actual product, especially for a 5th edition. There are many poorly worded definitions, a poor glossary, and an incredibly large amount of typos. A decent book for low level statistics, but not much else.

It's a beginner's textbook

I ordered this text for a class, a graduate class, and although I think it is a fine introduction to Statistics it should not be the text for a graduate level course. If you have never taken a Statistics course, and you find yourself having to take one in graduate school this would be a good text to prepare you for the course.

About the Author
Ronet Bachman, PhD, is a professor in the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice at the University of Delaware. She is coauthor of Statistical Methods for Crime and Criminal Justice (3rd ed.) and coeditor of Explaining Crime and Criminology: Essays in Contemporary Criminal Theory. In addition, she is author of Death and Violence on the Reservation and coauthor of Stress, Culture, and Aggression in the United States; and Violence: The Enduring Problem as well as numerous articles and papers that examine the epidemiology and etiology of violence, with a particular emphasis on women, the elderly, and minority populations. Her most recent federally funded research was a mixed-methods study that investigated the long-term trajectories of offending behavior using official data of a prison cohort released in the early 1990s and then interviewed in 2009.

Russell K. Schutt, PhD, is a professor and the chair of sociology at the University of Massachusetts, Boston, and a lecturer on sociology in the Department of Psychiatry at the Harvard Medical School (Massachusetts Mental Health Center). He completed his BA, MA, and PhD (1977) at the University of Illinois at Chicago and a postdoctoral fellowship in the Sociology of Social Control Training Program at Yale University (1977–1979). His other books include Investigating the Social World: The Process and Practice of Research, Fundamentals of Social Work Research (with Ray Engel), Making Sense of the Social World (with Dan Chambliss), and Research Methods in Psychology (with Paul G. Nestor)―all with SAGE Publications, as well as Homelessness, Housing, and Mental Illness (Harvard University Press) and Social Neuroscience: Brain, Mind, and Society (coedited with Larry J. Seidman and Matcheri S. Keshavan, also Harvard University Press). Most of his peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters focus on the effect of social context on cognition, satisfaction, functioning, and recidivism; the orientations of service recipients and of service and criminal justice personnel; and the organization of health and social services. He is currently a coinvestigator for a randomized trial of peer support for homeless dually diagnosed veterans funded by the Veterans Administration.

Brilliant Authors -

The text is either a great text with horrible supporting documentation, including the practice quizzes, or wonderfully written practice quizzes and a horribly written text. And I am very sad to add, the quizzes the Authors (or is it the Publisher's handiwork?) market to the Instructors are equally ill-conceived. If it is the intention of the Authors to write material and provide learning materials such that the quizzes are a reasonable measure of that learning they pitifully miss the mark. If the quizzes are merely to identify how poor the Authors did with the textbook, then they are excellent quizzes. The concepts are difficult enough, but when the Authors go out of their way to convolute the verbiage in either their text or online additional materials this is academic elitism. This is not a text I would select.

was great until I needed it

The book arrived on time as promised. The book was in great shape, however the cd that comes with the book seem to be sealed but was a different version then on the front of the book. Also when I tried to install the cd program SPSS it said there was a file missing. I took notice to the back of the cd and it looked a bit rough. I almost did not need the cd until the last week of class and so I lost points off my grade. I attempted to contact the seller,but received no feedback from them. I have not spoke to Amazon, so I thought to warn people to be careful if your order required the cd programs.

The book was really great in describing and explaining what tools you will need to conduct research. The only downside to this book is that it is pretty dry, but I needed it for a course so I couldn't complain.

About the Author

Marcia L. Tate, EdD, is the former executive director of professional development for the DeKalb County School System, Decatur, Georgia and has been presenting to adult audiences for more than 25 years. During her 30-year career with the school district, she has been a classroom teacher, reading specialist, language arts coordinator, and staff development executive director. I love this book! I've read several books on parenting, and this is the book that I continually use as a reference. Marcia Tate's strategies are effective and from the heart. Parents who use these strategies will form close bonds and develop engaged learners.
