About the Author
Joseph F. Healey is Professor Emeritus of Sociology at Christopher Newport University in Virginia. He received his PhD in sociology and anthropology from the University of Virginia. An innovative and experienced teacher of numerous race and ethnicity courses, he has written articles on minority groups, the sociology of sport, social movements, and violence, and he is also the author of Statistics: A Tool for Social Research (10th ed., 2014).

About the Author

Gary Paul Green is a professor in the Department of Community & Environmental Sociology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a community development specialist in the Center for Community & Economic Development at the University of Wisconsin-Extension. Green’s teaching and research interests are primarily in the areas of community and economic development. In addition to his work in the U.S., he has been involved in community and economic development research and teaching in China, New Zealand, South Korea, Uganda, and Ukraine.

Anna L. Haines, Ph.D. is a professor in the College of Natural Resources at the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point and a land use and community development specialist with the University of Wisconsin-Extension. Haines received her Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin - Madison in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning. Her research and teaching focuses on planning and community development from a natural resources or environmental perspective. Her research has focused on evaluating community planning and zoning in terms of smart growth and sustainability, land parcelization, and local food systems. Her extension work has focused on comprehensive planning and planning implementation tools and techniques, sustainable communities, and property rights issues.

Good for what it is

This book is presents an asset-based approach to community development and the organizing principle is the various forms of capital, i.e. social, political, financial, human, etc. I would have given the text five stars if there had been some space devoted to some of the theoretical aspects of community development- something to provide a framework for evaluating the application of the various forms of capital.

About the Author
Jodi O'Brien (Ph.D., University of Washington) is Professor of Sociology at Seattle University. She teaches courses in social psychology, sexuality, inequality, and classical and contemporary theory. She writes and lectures on the cultural politics of transgressive identities and communities. Her other books include Everyday Inequalities (Basil Blackwell), Social Prisms: Reflections on Everyday Myths and Paradoxes (Pine Forge Press), and The Production of Reality: Essays and Readings on Social Interaction, Fourth Edition (Pine Forge Press).

David Newman earned his bachelor’s degree from San Diego State University in 1981 and his graduate degrees from the University of Washington in Seattle (M.A. 1984, PhD 1988). After a year at the University of Connecticut, David came to DePauw in the fall of 1989 and has been here ever since. David teaches courses in Deviance, Mental Illness, Family, Social Psychology, and Research Methods. He has published numerous articles on teaching and has presented several research papers on the intersection of gender and power in intimate relationships. Recently most of his scholarly activity has been devoted to writing and revising several books, including Sociology: Exploring the Architecture of Everyday Life (SAGE ©2010); Identities and Inequalities : Exploring the Intersections of Race, Class, Gender, and Sexuality (McGraw-Hill ©2006); and Families: A Sociological Perspective (McGraw-Hill ©2009). He is currently working on a book-length manuscript that examines the cultural meaning, institutional importance, and everyday experience of “second chances.”

About the Author
Arthur Asa Berger is professor emeritus of Broadcast and Electronic Communication Arts at San Francisco State University, where he taught between 1965 and 2003. He has published more than 100 articles, numerous book reviews, and more than 60 books. Among his latest books are Media Analysis Techniques, Fourth Edition (2012), The Academic Writer’s Toolkit: A User’s Manual (2008), What Objects Mean: An Introduction to Material Culture (2009), Bali Tourism (2013), Tourism in Japan: An Ethno-Semiotic Analysis (2010), The Culture Theorist’s Book of Quotations (2010), and The Objects of Our Affection: Semiotics and Consumer Culture (2010). He has also written a number of academic mysteries such as Durkheim is Dead: Sherlock Holmes is Introduced to Sociological Theory (2003) and Mistake in Identity: A Cultural Studies Murder Mystery (2005). His books have been translated into nine languages.

Consise, easy to understand- and altogether a pleasant read!

This is a really straightforward and easy to understand book. Berger carefully and thoroughly goes over different methods used to create original research, both qualitative and qualitative. He carefully spells out the drawbacks each can have and outlines the important tactics that a researcher can use to insure the validity of their findings. Among the topics covered in this book are how research proposals generally work, interviewing, content analysis, historical analysis (quantitative), polling, statistical analysis, and testing (experiments) (qualitative). He also talks about different kinds of textual analysis and includes in here possibly the clearest explanation of semiotics I have ever come across. He has a plain, un-jargonized writing style and breaks apart text with cute illustrations and some admittedly lame "skits" (always between "him" and the "Grand Inquisitor" - you'll see. These are apparently supposed to be funny, but aren't.)
The chapters in this book are aided even further by never being so long as to be overwhelming. Berger doesn't mince words, but explains precisely and completely- and then switches to a new topic. Would that more authors would learn how to do this!
This was assigned reading for a graduate level class in which we prepared our thesis proposals. I think it should be mandatory reading for anyone considering embarking on original media research. I liked this book and though I would never have picked it up on my own- I am grateful that of all the choices there must be out there, my teacher chose this book.

Essential Overview of Comm Research Methods

Berger has written a good textbook that touches most of the bases for a communication research methods (qualitative AND quantitative) course. The assignments are well thought out and easy to adapt for particular class needs. My co-instructor and I added supplemental readings to flesh out Berger's sometimes bare bones approach--that is NOT a criticism, by the way: The skeletal approach lends itself to customizing the course with supplemental readings, and students appreciate not plunking down a hundred bucks for a book with much irrelevant information.

There were a few topics that I would like included, such as Actor-Network Theory, Community Discourse Analysis, and software for quantitative analysis (MiniTab, SPSS)--but if every reviewer persuaded Berger to do this, we'd soon be at a 500-page, $100 text, wouldn't we?

Berger's clear writing style and well-defined organizational layout made the book easy for students to read and navigate. I wasn't nearly amused as they were by the Grand Inquisitor leit motif, but that just reflects my lack of humor and I won't argue with anything that interests and motivates students.

Bottom line: students used this class to develop graduate (MS) research proposals and projects. They incorporated methods and ideas from the Berger text in ways that demonstrated the usefulness of this book. Faculty advisors then worked with the grad candidates to layer (deepen) their understanding and use of the methods Berger surveyed. Compared with the various texts we have used in previous years, Berger earned an "A".

Terrible

I used this book (along with others, thank goodness) in a graduate class I had to teach at the last minute. It was a disaster. The students knew more about psychoanalysis, Marxist ideological analysis, feminist critique, etc., than the author, who covered these and other topics in, literally and figuratively, a cartoon way. Most of the sections give an erroneous, woefully incomplete, extremely out of date, and therefore somewhat offensive rendition of the methods and theoretical/analytical approaches covered. Each session began with critique of this book, corrections, and me scrambling to find them more serious, up to date, sophisticated and accurate readings on the topics covered in this book. I would not recommend this for undergraduate or graduate courses!

Ron Nash is the author of the Corwin bestseller The Active Classroom (2008), along with The Active Teacher (2009), and The Active Mentor (2010). Nash’s professional career in education has included teaching social studies at the middle and high school levels. He also served as an instructional coordinator and organizational development specialist for the Virginia Beach City Public Schools for 13 years. About the Author
Robert L. Lovler, Ph.D., has over 30 years of experience working both as an internal and external consultant to Fortune 500 companies in the areas of employee assessment and selection, organizational development, strategic human resource consulting, and training design and delivery. His career began at CBS Inc. where he served in a several roles including Director of Training for their retail consumer electronics unit, then moving up to Vice- President of two different units within the CBS Publishing Group. He is currently is Vice-President of Human Resources and Practice Leader for Selection and Assessment at Wilson Learning Corporation, a consulting firm which focuses on human performance improvement. During his career, he has had the opportunity to design and implement a wide range of organizational interventions both domestically and internationally, working in Japan, China, Korea, Hong Kong, England and Italy. In the U.S., he supervised the development and implementation of the assessment center used to select candidates for entry into the Environmental Protection Agency’s Senior Executive Service Development Program, presenting the results in Washington D.C. to Governor Christie Todd Whitman, the EPA Administrator. He also developed the selection system used to help select commercial airline pilots for a major U.S. airline and worked with former Senator Warren Rudman to develop and implement a nationwide survey of sales practices in the rent-to-own industry. He has served as a testing consultant to the California Bar Association, the state of Pennsylvania and oversaw the development of the licensure examinations for medical physicists in the state of Texas. He has been on the adjunct faculty of the State University of New York at Farmingdale, Hofstra University and the University of Central Florida. He holds master’s and Ph.D. degrees from Hofstra University and is a member of the Society for Industrial & Organizational Psychology.

Leslie A. Miller, Ph.D., PHR has broad experience in consulting, teaching, and researching in the area of organizational and educational assessment, measurement, and development. Currently the owner of her own consulting business, LanneM TM LLC, she provides her clients with pragmatic and affordable talent management solutions-solutions to help them acquire, develop, and retain the talent they need to achieve desired business results today and in the future. Her expertise includes designing performance improvement/management tools and knowledge tests, customizing and facilitating leadership training programs, providing assessment-based executive coaching, and designing and implementing business impact evaluation and return on value studies. She also spends a significant amount of her time teaching graduate business, organizational behavior/leadership, and human resource courses at Rollins College and for the School of Advanced Studies at the University of Phoenix as well as mentoring doctoral learners through the dissertation process. Previously the vice president of leadership development/human resources at the Central Florida YMCA, she was responsible for contributing to the strategic plans of the organization by leading the association’s talent management initiatives-recruiting, developing, and retaining the association’s talent. Prior to joining the YMCA, she was employed by Wilson Learning Corporation (WLC), a performance improvement company,where she served as the director of business solutions, a senior project manager, and a business solutions consultant. In these roles, she was responsible for conceptualizing, designing, managing, and implementing traditional and technology-based assessment,measurement, and training performance improvement solutions for client organizations.

Prior to joining WLC, she served as the assistant dean of admissions at Rollins College, where she was also a faculty member of the psychology, organizational behavior, and human resources programs. Before joining Rollins College, she was a senior research psychologist for the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, in Washington, D.C. At the Bureau, she designed, researched, and analyzed the results of some of our nation’s most important surveys. In her current and previous roles, she has worked with various leading organizations in the high-tech, financial, pharmaceutical, and transportation industries. With a Ph.D. in educational psychology from the University of Maryland, she has an extensive list of publications.

Sandra A.McIntire, Ph.D., received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in psychology and her doctor of philosophy degree in industrial/organizational psychology from the University of South Florida. She began her career in the human resources department of the city of Clearwater, Florida, and moved into consulting with Wilson Learning Corporation (WLC) as a senior project manager. At WLC, she developed the first retail video selection test, the Teller Selection Program (TAP). She also consulted with Fortune 500 companies such as Citibank NA, United Technologies, IBM, and General Motors. In 1991, she accepted a tenure track professorship in the department of psychology at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida. In addition to teaching social science statistics, research methods, and tests and measurements, she served as director of the psychology program for nontraditional students in Rollins’s Hamilton Holt School. She has collaborated on three books: The Job Analysis Kit, Organization Development: Strategies for a Changing Environment, and Foundations of Psychological Testing (first and second editions). In addition, she has served as a book reviewer for Personnel Psychology. She has collaborated on peer-reviewed research and made numerous presentations to national organizations such as the American Society for Training and Development, the American Psychological Association, and the Southeastern Conference on Teaching of Psychology. Dr. McIntire is now retired from Rollins College.

They advertised "like new" or "very good," either way the book came wrapped and in great condition. No highlighting, no torn pages, looks like the book was never opened.

great book for entering the psychometrics field

I like this book because its topics are comprehensive and it is written in a way that is very easy to understand. It says its audience is undergraduate students, but as a graduate student jumping into the field of psychological testing, it is a very useful book to start with and get a clear and big picture of what the field is about.
