Re-examining key aspects of school culture

Safe and Peaceful Schools by Winslade and Williams.

I was very fortunate to have been involved in reading the early draft copy of this book. It was ground-breaking then, and it still is, as I read this handsome hardcopy.

Safe and peaceful schools are intentions that are included in every school vision/mission statement. Getting beyond that intent is the problem. What Williams and Winslade have done is to give schools an integrated package of strategies in relation to student behaviour and school culture. The narratives that the authors have written are mostly about tough Maori kids, but the language, thoughts and actions are applicable across the range of schools.

This book caters for both the experienced teacher/administrators and also the neophytes because it contains loads of good ideas and strategies.

The bits that I thought were relevant for me, as a school principal, were:
1. Zero tolerance does not work.
2. The antecedents to violence.
3. Double listening.
4. The person is not the problem.
5. Externalizing the conversations, which we probably did intuitively.
6. Real apologies.
7. Problem mapping.
8. Restorative conferencing.
9. Circle conversations.
10. Undercover anti-bullying teams.

In education, this area is crowded but the Winslade and Williams approach is sufficiently new and integrated to be worth implementing in schools.

The SAGE Encyclopedia of Terrorism’s second edition comes eight years after the first, which was in production as the 9/11 attacks occurred. In the intervening years, there have been a number of encyclopedias of terrorism, including Encyclopedia of World Terrorism: 1996–2002 (2003); The Greenhaven Encyclopedia of Terrorism (2007); and Encyclopedia of Terrorism (2007). More than 60 new entries and 100,000 words of new material expand the scope of the first edition by introducing new theoretical entries on topics such as economics and terrorism, international relations and terrorism, and even religious and spiritual perspectives and terrorism. In addition, the volume has updated entries on the Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts and the connections to terrorism. Following the organization and format of the first edition, the 500-plus entries are listed alphabetically, with an extended signed essay, see also references, and a bibliography of further readings. The longest article is reserved for Iraq War, which is seven pages long. Although other essays are not as long, they do include interesting facets of terrorism, such as Taliban code of conduct and Terrorism in popular culture. The volume is up-to-date, including the killing of Osama bin Laden, in May 2011. As worldwide and domestic terrorism continue to evolve, and America’s stature in the world continues to be questioned and challenged, there will be no end to revisions to this and other volumes on terrorism. About the Author

C. Augustus “Gus” Martin is a Professor of Criminal Justice Administration at California State University, Dominguez Hills, where he regularly teaches a course on the subject of terrorism and extremism. He has also served as Associate Vice President for Human Resources Management, Acting Associate Dean of the College of Business Administration and Public Policy, Associate Vice President for Faculty Affairs, and Chair of the Department of Public Administration & Public Policy. He began his academic career as a member of the faculty of the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs, University of Pittsburgh, where he was an Administration of Justice professor. His current research and professional interests are terrorism and extremism, homeland security, administration of justice, and juvenile justice.

 

Dr. Martin is author of a number of books on the subjects of terrorism and homeland security, including Understanding Homeland Security (SAGE, 2016); Essentials of Terrorism: Concepts and Controversies (2016); Understanding Terrorism: Challenges, Perspectives, and Issues (SAGE, 2015); The SAGE Encyclopedia of Terrorism, Second Edition (SAGE, 2011); Terrorism and Homeland Security (SAGE, 2011); and The New Era of Terrorism: Selected Readings (SAGE, 2004). He is also author of Juvenile Justice: Process and Systems (SAGE, 2005).

 

Prior to joining academia, Dr. Martin served as Managing Attorney for the Fair Housing Partnership of Greater Pittsburgh, where he was also director of a program created under a federal consent decree to desegregate public and assisted housing. He was also Special Counsel to the Attorney General of the U.S. Virgin Islands on the island of St. Thomas. As Special Counsel, he occupied a personal and confidential position in the central office of the Department of Justice; sat as hearing officer for disciplinary hearings and departmental grievances; served as chair of the Drug Policy Committee; served as liaison to the intergovernmental Law Enforcement Coordinating Committee as well as to the Narcotics Strike Force; and provided daily legal and policy advice to the Attorney General. Prior to serving as Special Counsel, he was a “floor” Legislative Assistant to Congressman Charles B. Rangel of New York. As Legislative Assistant, he researched, evaluated and drafted legislation in areas of foreign policy, foreign aid, human rights, housing, education, social services, and poverty; he also drafted House floor statements, Congressional Record inserts, press releases, and news articles; and he composed speeches, briefing materials, and legislative correspondence.

About the Author

Davita Silfen Glasberg is a Professor and Chair of the Sociology Department at the University of Connecticut-Storrs. She has published extensively on issues of bank hegemony, the state in finance capitalism, and political economy, including The Power of Collective Purse Strings: The Effects of Bank Hegemony on Corporations and the State (University of California Press). She is also deeply involved in research regarding the social constructions of race, class, and gender. I am currently working on a book about power, oppression, and the state, which explores this question. She has co-authored the following college texts:

About the Author
Bruce Joyce grew up in New Jersey, was educated at Brown University, and, after military service, taught in the schools of Delaware. He was a professor at the University of Delaware, the University of Chicago, and Teachers College, Columbia University, where he directed the laboratory school and the elementary teacher education program. His research, writing, and consultation are focused on models of teaching, professional development design and implementation, school renewal, and programs for K12 beginning readers and Grade 3-12 struggling readers. Primary topics of his speaking and consultation include Teaching Methods, Curriculum and Content, Staff Development, and 21st Century School Renewal. He lives in Saint Simons Island, Georgia, and can be reached via e-mail at brucejoyce40@gmail.com. With Emily Calhoun, his most recent book is Models of Professional Development (2010). Thousand Oaks: Corwin Press.

Emily Calhoun currently focusses on school improvement and professional development, where she combines practice and research. She specializes in the language arts, particularly the teaching of reading and writing in the elementary grades and literacy development K-12, including programs for struggling readers.

She writes and consults on action research, The Picture-Word Inductive Model of Teaching, and ways of incorporating digital technologies into K-12 learning environments through the development of hybrid courses.

She lives in Saint Simons Island, Georgia.

About the Author
Sharon M. Ballard, Ph.D., CFLE, CFCS: is an Associate Professor in the Department of Child Development and Family Relations at East Carolina University. She has been a certified family life educator since 1998 and is serving her fifth year on the CFLE advisory board with the National Council on Family Relations. Sharon has taught family life education and family studies courses at the university level (both undergraduate and graduate) for eleven years and at the high school level for six years. She has also conducted a variety of family life education programs in community settings. She has authored or co-authored numerous journal articles, many of which are about family life education.

Alan C. Taylor, Ph.D. CFLE: is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Child Development and Family Relations at East Carolina University. Alan has taught family life education and family relationship curriculum at the university level for the past 14 years. He has worked within the community as a family life educator within a state prison setting and also as a court-mandated parenting instructor. Alan’s master’s degree is specifically in Family Life Education from Brigham Young University and he has been a Certified Family Life Educator (CFLE) through the National Council on Family Relations for the past 11 years. About the Author
Dr. Kevin Alderson is an associate professor of counselling psychology at the University of Calgary. His areas of research interest include human sexuality, gender studies, and LGBTI studies. Throughout his 26 years as a practicing psychologist, Dr. Alderson has counselled hundreds of clients with nondominant sexualities and gender variations. He is the Editor in Chief of the Canadian Journal of Counselling and Psychotherapy, the national peer-reviewed journal in the Canadian counselling field. Before joining the university in July 2001, Dr. Alderson was Head of Counselling and Health Services at a community college in Calgary for several years. He writes a monthly column for Outlooks Magazine and has six published books. He is the primary author of the recent policy statement adopted by the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) regarding Gender Identity in Adolescents and Adults, and co-authored the official CPA fact sheets for Gender Dysphoria in Adolescents and Adults and for Gender Dysphoria in Children.
