About the Author
Laurie Stevahn holds a B.A. in political science from Pacific Lutheran University, an M.Ed. in curriculum and instruction from Seattle Pacific University, and a Ph.D. in educational psychology from the University of Minnesota. She currently is Associate Professor of Education at Seattle University and Director of the Educational Leadership doctoral program. She teaches graduate courses in research and evaluation, curriculum and instruction, and social justice in professional practice. Special areas of expertise include cooperative learning and conflict resolution, organization development and systemic change, interactive models of teaching and assessment, and essential competencies for program evaluators. Her publications appear in a variety of journals including the American Educational Research Journal, Journal of Social Psychology, Child Development, Journal of Educational Research, Theory Into Practice, Educational Leadership, American Journal of Evaluation, and Canadian Journal of Program Evaluation. Stevahn is also the co-author of several resource books for educators, including Cooperative Learning: Where Heart Meets Mind and The Portfolio Organizer: Succeeding with Portfolios in Your Classroom. She is the author, with Jean A. King, of Needs Assessment Phase III: Taking Action for Change.

Jean A. King is a professor in the Department of Organizational Leadership, Policy, and Development at the University of Minnesota. She holds an M.S. and Ph.D. from Cornell University and, prior to her graduate study, taught middle school English in upstate New York before moving to New Orleans, LA where she was on the faculty at Tulane University. In 1989 she moved upriver to the University of Minnesota as the founding director of the Center for Applied Research and Educational Improvement (CAREI) in the College of Education and Human Development, a position she held for four years before working collaboratively to revitalize program evaluation instruction in the College. King founded the Minnesota Evaluation Studies Institute (MESI) in1996 and currently serves as its director. With over thirty years’ experience teaching and conducting evaluations, Professor King has received numerous awards for her work, including the Myrdal Award for Evaluation Practice and the Ingle Award for Extraordinary Service from the American Evaluation Association, three teaching awards, and three community service awards. A sought-after presenter and long-time writer on evaluation, she is the author of numerous articles, chapters, and reviews and retains an abiding interest in participatory evaluation and evaluation capacity building.

About the Author

Peter G. Northouse, PhD, is Professor Emeritus of Communication in the School of Communication at Western Michigan University. In addition to publications in professional journals, he is the author of Leadership: Theory and Practice (now in its seventh edition) and Introduction to Leadership: Concepts and Practice (now in its third edition) and coauthor of Health Communication: Strategies for Health Professionals (now in its third edition). His scholarly and curricular interests include models of leadership, leadership assessment, ethical leadership, and leadership and group dynamics. For more than 30 years, he has taught courses in leadership, interpersonal communication, and organizational communication to both undergraduate and graduate students. Currently, he is a consultant and lecturer on trends in leadership research, leadership development, and leadership education. He holds a doctorate in speech communication from the University of Denver, and master’s and bachelor’s degrees in communication education from Michigan State University.

Big on concepts, short on delivery

This is an introductory text; if your are looking for more in-depth discussion and more theory, look to Northouse's other excellent leadership texts. That being said, this text is easily digestible; one can read a chapter in 15 minutes and then spend some time working the activities. With this text and referencing other texts, along with practical experience, one can gain the vital skills necessary to become an effective leader.

Great book for leaders at all levels

Required reading for a master's level class in HRD, but it's an easy read with excellent practical examples. I would recommend it for any management team or anyone in a leadership role. There's also a version with an online key code that gives podcasts, studies, and movies relayed to the text.

About the Author

Elizabeth D. Hutchison, MSW, PhD, received her MSW from the George Warren Brown School of Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis and her PhD from the University at Albany, State University of New York. She was on the faculty in the Social Work Department at Elms College from 1980 to 1987, and served as chair of the department from 1982 to 1987. She was on the faculty in the School of Social Work at Virginia Commonwealth University from 1987 to 2009, where she taught courses in human behavior and the social environment, social work and social justice, and child and family policy; she also served as field practicum liaison. She has been a social worker in health, mental health, aging, and child and family welfare settings. She is committed to providing social workers with comprehensive, current, and useful frameworks for thinking about human behavior. Her other research interests focus on child and family welfare. She currently lives in Rancho Mirage, California where she is active in environmental justice issues facing farm workers in East Coachella Valley.

Not great, but ok

This book was a required text for class and I personally feel this book is difficult to study for several reasons. It doesn't make talking/main points very well. It does have some points bolded, but associating definitions are wordy and sometimes a sentence or two away. Other important words are italicized, but because the print is so small, they hardly stand out. That can make it difficult when reviewing the text for a definition/point or to refresh.

In addition, all of the references sited within the body of the text -- as many as 15 and more per page -- are distracting and make the book appear more like a dissertation as another reviewer also noted. Perhaps if it were more like a traditional textbook and less like a one-sided conversation or lecture, it would be more interesting.

Overall, the depth of Ms. Hutchison's knowledge is unquestionable, but the delivery could be better. Much better.

HBSE Large Systems

I purchased this book from Amazon.com for a masters of social work human behavior social environment class on large systems. I was expecting the read to be dry and technical. I am happy to report, this book is an easy read and the major concepts are broken down into every day language. Each chapter has an 8- 12 paragraph case vignette to make the otherwise difficult material easy to explain. FIVE STARS for Elizabeth D. Hutchison on this book. And, I had the book in my hand a full week before classes started.

Easy to Read, great case studies

I ordered this book for a college course on Human Behavior. The book was easy to read and had interesting case studies that you can use to apply the principles the book discusses. I usually sell my school backs after I've completed the course, however, I kept this book to use as a future reference.

About the Author
Allen E. Ivey received his counseling doctorate from Harvard University and is distinguished Emeritus Professor at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Courtesy Professor, Counselor Education, University of South Florida, Tampa. He is past-President and Fellow of the Society for Counseling Psychology of the American Psychological Association, APA’s Society for the Study of Ethnic and Minority Psychology, the Asian-American Psychological Association, and the American Counseling Association. He has received many awards throughout his career and has authored over 40 books and 200 articles and chapters. His works have been translated into 23 languages. His recent work has focused on applying Developmental Counseling and Therapy and neuroscience to the analysis and treatment of severe psychological distress.

Michael D’Andrea received his doctorate in human development counseling from Vanderbilt in 1982. He is currently a faulty member with Seton Hall University as well as St. Mary’s University (San Antonio, Texas). In addition to his work as a Professor, he serves as the Executive Director of the National Institute for Cultural Competence. He has authored or coauthored more than 200 articles, book chapters, books, and other scholarly work ranging from human development to multicultural counseling. Besides his contributions as a writer, researcher, and professor, Dr. D’Andrea is well known for his political and social activism in the fields of counseling and psychology.

Mary Bradford Ivey received her doctorate from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She is courtesy Professor of Counselor Education at the University of South Florida, Tampa and a Fellow of the American Counseling Association. She is a former school counselor in the Amherst schools and her program was named one of the top ten in the nation. She has co-authored 15 books, several articles, and has developed many video training demonstrations. She has served as visiting professor at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, University of Hawaii, Manoa, and Flinders University in South Australia.

Inconsistent and Not Thorough

The text cautions in every chapter about generalizing based upon other's ethnicity, sexual orientation, etc. then proceeds to use stereotypes as examples of how to conduct psychotherapy with cultural minorities. It also cautions against making the white male therapist assumption (all therapists are white, male or both), but often engages in that assumption. Blanket statements regarding various topics are made without providing any citations and coverage of the actual theories is minimal at best.

Great Information, Horrible Layout and Organization

This text was written very well and provided a lot of information. However, the way that this book was written was almost impossible to follow and if you were writing a paper from it nothing could be found even after diligent notes. It was one of Ivey's WORSE written books. I had to use this for a class and while I learned a lot from the text it could have been better organized.

I received an A in the course but I would not recommend buying this book unless you have too.

Andy Field is a Reader in Psychology at The University of Sussex. He adores cats, listens to and plays loud music and enjoys teaching statistics. Best combo of stats and SPSS

Although there may be better books about statistics, and better books about SPSS, this book does the best job in combining and integrating these two into a coherent whole. The author is obviously a master teacher, and explains everything in a nice step by step manner, making it clear which material is basic, which is more advanced. Field also takes a refreshingly lighthearted approach to the topic, which may not "click" with all readers, but which is a nice reminder of not taking ourselves too too seriously. The book includes access to a good host of data files, via the companion web site, as well as video tutorials about using SPSS.

By the way, about the reader who complained about the author being from the UK, guess what? Brit stats is the same as Yank stats.

Good textbook... only that... textbook. Reading is understandable. Clear colorful pages. You must be knowledgeable about the subject to understand this.

SHOOT ME PLEASE

I have to say, this book is terrible! Pray to the lord that if this is the required book for you class, that your teacher will actually teach, rather then expect you to teach yourself from this awful book. Its from the UK, and is fine and dandy if you are from there, I am in the US and it is not helpful at all. He is all over the place, and you end up worse off then before you read his jumbled explanations.

Save yourself the money and just look up his companion website and watch the videos.

About the Author

Mary K. Stohr is a professor in the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology at Washington State University. She received a Ph.D. (1990) in political science, with specializations in criminal justice and public administration, from Washington State University. Professor Stohr has published over 80 academic works in the areas of correctional organizations and operation, correctional personnel, inmate needs and assessment, program evaluation, gender, and victimization. Her books, with others, include The American Prison (with Cullen and Jonson); Correctional Assessment, Casework and Counseling (with Walsh); Corrections: A Text Reader (with Walsh and Hemmens); Criminal Justice Management: Theory and Practice in Justice Centered Organizations (with Collins); and The Prison Experience (with Hemmens). She is the Executive Director of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, received the Founders Award from ACJS in 2009, and is a Co-Founder of the Corrections Section of ACJS.

Anthony Walsh, a professor of Criminology at Boise State University, received his Ph.D. from Bowling Green State University at the ripe old age of 43. He has field experience in law enforcement and corrections. He is the author of over 150 journal articles/book chapters and  34 books, including Biology and Criminology (Routledge, 2009), Feminist Criminology Through a Biosocial Lens (Carolina Academic Press, ©2011), Law, Justice, and Society (with Craig Hemmens, Oxford University Press, 2011), Correctional Assessment, Casework, and Counseling (with Mary Stohr, American Correctional Association, 2011), The Neurobiology of Criminal Behavior: Gene-Brain-Culture Interaction (with Jon Bolen, Ashgate, 2012),  The Science Wars: The Politics of Gender and Race (Transaction, 2013), Criminological Theory: Assessing Philosophical Assumptions (Anderson/Elsevier, 2014), Biosociology: Bridging the Biology-Sociology Divide (Transaction, 2014), and Criminology: The Essentials (Sage, 2015). His interests include the biosocial criminology, statistics, and criminal justice assessment and counseling.

Very well done text book

I have used this book while teaching at a public university. I found this to be a very well written text with current information. The text is written in terms undergraduate students understand. The text is also very affordable for students. The authors have provided excellent tools and resources at the publisher's Web site including PowerPoints, test questions, activities for students, helpful Web sites, and chapter outlines. The text itself is written with a sensitivity to the environment. I will use this text again in future classes.
