About the Author
Matthew Lippman has taught criminal law and criminal procedure in the Department of Criminal Justice at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) for more than twenty years. He has also taught courses on civil liberties, law and society, and terrorism and teaches international criminal law at John Marshall Law School in Chicago. He earned a Doctorate in Political Science from Northwestern University, a Master of Law from Harvard Law School, and is a member of the Pennsylvania Bar. He has been voted by the graduating seniors at UIC to receive the Silver Circle Award for outstanding teaching on six separate occasions and has also received the UIC Flame Award from the University of Illinois Alumni Association, as well as the Excellence in Teaching Award, Teaching Recognition (Portfolio) Award, and Honors College Fellow of the Year Award. The university chapter of Alpha Phi Sigma, the criminal justice honors society, named him “criminal justice professor of the year” on three occasions. In 2008, Professor Lippman was named College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Master Teacher. He is also recognized in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers, and in May 2012 he was honored by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, which named him Commencement Marshal. Professor Lippman is author of more than 100 articles and 3 books. These publications focus on criminal law and criminal procedure, international human rights, and comparative law. Professor Lippman is the author of Contemporary Criminal Law: Concepts, Cases, and Controversies, Third Edition (SAGE, ©2013) His work is cited in hundreds of academic publications and by international courts and organizations. A Good School Book

If you're looking at this book for casual reading I would advise you to keep looking, but this is a pretty good book for class. I'm currently using it in my criminal law (CJA 354) class as the required reading. With the class, we read chapters according to the syllabus, but without the class this would be a hefty read as there are almost 600 pages of reading material.

This is a book I'll be taking with me to law school as it does contain some pretty helpful material and it is well written. The author lists cases and then discusses those cases, but the main focus of the book are many concepts to law. For example, the book goes into great detail about constitutional limitations, actus rea (criminal acts) and mens rea (criminal intent), justification and defense excuses, crimes against public order and morality, etc.

One thing that I'm not crazy about is that there is a section in Appendix A that discusses what needs to go into a court citation (e.g. Jones v. United States, 308 F.2D), but it does not go into great detail and is actually kind of vague. I'm a visual guy and it would have been nice if a visual example and breakdown were included, but I guess that's where the internet comes in handy.

Buy this book used and you'll save a bundle of cash. I did and my book looks brand new. One thing I will say, though, that the seller forgot to highlight, this is not the latest edition of this book and will most likely not match up with your school's syllabus (depending on which version your school's using). This is the 2006 version and my school is using the 2010 version, so buyer beware when making your purchase.

Although this is the second edition and the class called for the third edition, there is so little difference it has not been a issue and the difference is unapparent.

This was purchased for a college class on current issues in Criminal Justice. My teacher is a circuit court judge who (as all judges must) went to law school. This book reads as a law school book in some ways. The cases listed at the end or mixed in the chapters help to emphasize to the reader what they previously read on certain topics such as Actus Reus and Criminal Responsibility. These are actual cases that put into perspective not only how these terms apply in general but how they apply in the real world of the criminal justice system. A warning on some of the cases is needed since some are upseting and graphic but this is the real world of the criminal justice system and this author does not hold back in showing the reader what they will face.

About the Author
Dawn M. McBride is a professor of psychology at Illinois State University, where she has taught research methods for the past 13 years. Her research interests include automatic forms of memory, false memory, prospective memory, and forgetting. In addition to research methods, she teaches courses in introductory psychology, cognition and learning, human memory, and a graduate course in experimental design. She is a recipient of the Illinois State University Teaching Initiative Award. Her out-of-work interests include spending time with her family, traveling, watching Philadelphia (her place of birth) sports teams, and reading British murder mysteries. She earned her PhD in cognitive psychology from the University of California, Irvine, and her BA from the University of California, Los Angeles.

J. Cooper Cutting (Ph.D. University of Illinois, Cognitive Psychology) is and Associate Professor of Psychology and Associate Chair at Illinois State University. His research interests are in psycholinguistics, primarily with a focus on the production of language. He teaches Research Methods in Psychology regularly and supervises undergraduate research in his laboratory.

All of his experiences have been in working with diverse populations and his area of study is the behavior of white people in multicultural settings. It is his belief and experience that too often white people are observers of multicultural issues rather than personally involved with them. He works with colleagues to design and implement programs for and with schools, law enforcement agencies, and community-based organizations to provide access and achievement. He and his wife and frequent co-author, Delores, are enjoying this phase of life as grandparents, as educators, and in support of just causes that extend the promises of democracy throughout society in authentic ways.

Progressive propaganda indoctrinating American students

This is a brazen piece of progressive/communist/socialist propaganda that has infiltrated into too many American school curriculums. Every single parent in America should examine this book closely and be prepared to fight the school board to remove this piece of garbage. You'd be much better off reading "Witness" by Whittaker Chambers to your kids at night.

This book is nothing more than political propaganda. This type of thinking is dangerous and will end up causing a race war if nothing else. Also parents be aware schools in Omaha have made this crap required reading.

The Cultural Proficiency Journey

This book is nothing more than a progressive's journey to power. Its socialistic dribble espousing redistribution of wealth from "whites" to everybody else is disguised by the author's attempt to raise cultural awareness among teachers. Teachers have had cultural competency training for the better part of 20 years and ethnic sensitivity training as far back as the early 70's when Affirmative Action was implemented. This book is a politicized piece of indoctrination and propaganda that does not belong in any school district. Shouldn't we be using tax dollars to train teachers in academic proficiency?? Wouldn't those dollars be better spent to educate our youth to be proficient in math, reading, history and other core subjects. Shame on the progressive authors of this piece of crap. Don't buy this book. And if your school district does, get yourself out to the school board meetings pronto!!

Editor Beare, a sociology and law professor, and a team of more than 100 contributors successfully negotiated the complexity of transnational crime to compile 183 exceptionally clear, concise, and readable one- to four-page articles on criminal activity in which border crossings play an integral part. Articles are listed within 11 categories of transnational criminal activity in a “Reader’s Guide” at the beginning of the volume. Categories include “Crimes and Criminal Markets,” “Geography of Transnational Crime,” “Policing and Intelligence Organizations,” “Sources of Data and Research on Transnational Crime,” and “Terrorism.” Entries within “Crimes and Criminal Markets,” for example, include many topics that could turn into college or high-school term papers, such as Art and antiquities, Human trafficking, Nigerian money scams, Piracy, Sex slavery, and Wildlife crime. Each entry ends with a helpful bibliography of further readings. The excellent articles would have been better served with up-to-date thematic maps, tables, or graphs. About the Author
Professor Margaret Beare's career combines academic teaching with research and policy development. Her research interests are transnationalization of crime and law enforcement; public and private policing; organized crime; women and the criminal justicesystem; money laundering; public policing strategies and corrections. Former Director of the Jack and Mae Nathanson Centre for the Study of Organized Crime and Corruption, Professor Beare has been involved in police research for more than 20 years. She served 11 years with the Department of the Solicitor General Canada--two years as Director of Police Policy and Research. Her book, Criminal Conspiracies: Organized Crime in Canada (Toronto: Nelson Canada, 1996), was the first academic book to look at organized crime in Canada and to trace the development of the concept and the legislation, and remains the point of reference forscholarship in the field.  Her edited book, entitled Critical Reflections on Transnational Organized Crime, Money Laundering, and Corruption, was published in 2003 by University of Toronto Press. Her two latest books were also published by U of T Press in the Spring of 2007. Money Laundering in Canada: The Chasing of Dirty and Dangerous Dollars is a follow-up to a 1990 report entitledTracing of Illicit Funds: Money Laundering in Canada that she co-authored with Stephen Schneider. The second book is a co-edited manuscript pertaining to police independence entitled Police and Government Relations: Who’s Calling the Shots.

About the Author
My primary field of preparation is the history of Christianity, particularly post-Enlightenment. My teaching interests are intrinsically cross-disciplinary. In religion they include religion and culture studies, contemporary American religion, theology, religion and ecology, and feminist studies in religion. In addition to teaching in the religion curriculum, I also teach courses on feminist theories and methodologies, ecofeminism, and global and transnational feminism. In my pedagogy, as in my research and writing, I therefore move freely among women’s and gender studies, environmental studies and international affairs.

About the Author

Gretchen B. Rossman is Professor of International Education at the Center for International Education at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She received her PhD in education from the University of Pennsylvania with a specialization in higher education administration. She has served as a visiting professor at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education. Prior to coming to the University of Massachusetts, she was Senior Research Associate at Research for Better Schools in Philadelphia. With an international reputation as a qualitative methodologist, she has expertise in qualitative research design and methods, mixed- methods monitoring and evaluation, and inquiry in education. Over the past 30+ years, she has coauthored numerous books, two of which are editions of major qualitative research texts (this fourth edition of Learning in the Field, with Sharon Rallis, and Designing Qualitative Research, 6th edition, with Catherine Marshall―both widely used guides to qualitative inquiry). She has authored or coauthored more than 45 articles, book chapters, and technical reports focused on methodological issues in qualitative research syntheses, validity in qualitative research, mixed-methods evaluation practice, and ethical research practice, as well as the analysis and evaluation of educational reform initiatives both in the United States and internationally.

Professor Rossman has served as principal investigator (PI) or co-PI on several international projects in such countries as Azerbaijan, India, Malawi, Palestine, Senegal, Tanzania, and the Gambia, as well as external evaluator on several domestic projects, including a Department of Education–funded reform initiative, a National Science Foundation–funded middle-grades science initiative, and a number of projects implementing more inclusive practices for students with disabilities. She regularly presents papers at the annual meetings of the American Educational Research Association and the Comparative and International Education Society. 

Sharon F. Rallis is Dwight W. Allen Distinguished Professor of Education Policy and Reform at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Previously, she was professor of education at the University of Connecticut; lecturer on education at Harvard; and associate professor of educational leadership at Peabody College, Vanderbilt University. Her doctorate is from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. She has coauthored numerous books, including several on leadership: Principals of Dynamic Schools: Taking Charge of Change (with Ellen Goldring); Dynamic Teachers: Leaders of Change (with Gretchen Rossman); Leading Dynamic Schools: How to Create and Implement Ethical Policies (with Gretchen Rossman and others); and Leading With Inquiry and Action: How Principals Improve Teaching and Learning (with Matthew Militello and Ellen Goldring). Her numerous articles, book chapters, edited volumes, and technical reports address issues of research and evaluation methodology, ethical practice in research and evaluation, education policy and leadership, and school reform.

A past-president of the American Evaluation Association (2005) and current editor of the American Journal of Evaluation, Professor Rallis has been involved with education and evaluation for more than three decades. She has been a teacher, counselor, principal, researcher, program evaluator, director of a major federal school reform initiative, and an elected school board member. Currently, her teaching includes courses on inquiry, program evaluation, qualitative methodology, and organizational theory. Her research has focused on the local implementation of programs driven by federal, state, or district policies. As external evaluator or principal investigator (PI), she has studied a variety of domestic and international policy and reform efforts, such as alternative professional development for leaders; collaborations between agencies responsible for educating incarcerated or institutionalized youth; initiatives supporting inclusive education for children and youth with disabilities; local school governance and leadership; labor-management relations in school districts; and leadership development. Her work with students on evaluation and qualitative methodology has taken her as far as Afghanistan, Turkey, and Palestine.

Great Qualitative Research Guide for Beginners

While it does not completely answer every question I have as I write up my proposal, it's clear and easy to understand presentation of the facts is very helpful. Their inclusion of input from top qualitative researchers provides the reader with a rich and extensive wealth of knowledge.

About the Author
D. Soyini Madison is professor of Performance Studies and Anthropology, and served as Interim Director of the Program in African Studies at Northwestern University. She is the author of Acts of Activism: Human Rights as Radical Performance (2010, Cambridge UP) and the co-editor with Judith Hamera of the SAGE Handbook of Performance Studies (2006, SAGE). Madison lived in West Africa as a Senior Fulbright Scholar and has conducted field research over the past ten years on the performance tactics of local human rights activists in Ghana.

An excellent resource for the budding ethnographer

D. Soyini Madison's "Critical Ethnography: Method, Ethics, and Performance" is a rich and accessible resource for scholars and students engaged in ethnographic fieldwork. It provides a concise primer in the theoretical, methodological, ethical, and performative dimensions of field research, and maintains a very pragmatic, "how-to" approach that might be especially valuable to younger scholars or those doing ethnographic work for the first time. The goals of the book are explicitly pedagogical, and to this end Madison organizes it around three fictional case studies which she relates to the tripartite divisions of method/theory, ethics, and performance that structure the work. Madison's recapitulations of important theories in anthropology, gender studies, performance studies, postcolonial studies and related fields are particularly deft and approachable for those of us who sometimes need a little help keeping our "dasein" straight from our interpellation, our Merleau-Ponty from our Heidegger. Throughout the book, Madison seems particularly indebted to the work of the late Dwight Conquergood, whose ideas on the intersections of performance, ethnography, and ethics are quite prominent and inform many of her positions. All in all, the book is a treasure trove of sound, practical advice from a seasoned ethnographer on topics ranging from how to deal with writer's block, to how to conduct an interview, to how to think about ethical obligations to your informants, as well as many other concerns that often arise in the context of doing and writing about fieldwork.

For Documentary Film Makers

As a documentary filmmaker this text was really helpful to me when working with my sources and talents. It was suggested to me by a friend when critiquing my new work. After reading it I was able to place myself in an increasingly thoughtful and thorough position when working with my interviewees. I would suggest every visual artist interested in exploring ethnicity or identity through appropriations should check out the ethics section!

A well written book about an important methodology

Let us face it: books on academic subjects can be a tedious read, but Madison writes with a passion for critical ethnography that makes the reader understand the relevance of this very important methodology.

Her case studies provide a context for why critical ethnography is an important research methodology for many of the social science disciplines. She also provides great sidebars on important historical events that helped shape critical ethnography.
