Gods in the Global Village: The World's Religions in Sociological Perspective (Sociology for a New Century Series), by Lester R. (Ray) Kur

In an era plagued by religious conflict, the Third Edition of Gods in the Global Village directly responds to issues of social problems prevalent in the world today. Using an engaging, thought-provoking style, author Lester R. Kurtz focuses on the relationship among the major faith traditions that inform the thinking and ethical standards of most people in the emerging global social order.

This book focuses on a central aspect of that common crisis. A major assumption of this book is that all knowledge is shaped by the social context of the knower; therefore, both religious traditions and our studies of them are shaped by the context in which we construct them. The author argues that religious pluralism will be a necessary precondition of the global village for the foreseeable future. The question that faces us as a human community is not “Which religious tradition is true?” or even “Is any religious tradition true?” but rather “How can we enable the various religious and secular traditions to coexist peacefully on the planet?” The text supports the belief that the sociology of religion—itself a pluralistic discipline—can provide invaluable insight into the most pressing problems of our time.

Review
"Kurtz’s book is the only textbook on the sociology of religion to my knowledge that is genuinely interreligious. It transcends the one-sidedness of western / Christian views not only in intent, but in fact… the book introduces the key topics and concerns of the given discipline with clarity and good continuity. It is also quite comprehensive. In one word, it is a textbook that can be used as such without too much of a need for the instructor to reshuffle everything." (Claude A. Perrottet 2001-04-27)

Finally! My kind of Sociology of Religion!
By by Amanda Evans, Sunflower Press
Exceptional. Unlike most Sociology of Religion texts, this one is not stuck in the mechanics and jargon of the author's pet method for analyzing, nor does it assault one with crude reductionisms. One learns a great deal about the various religions, whose major themes are compared utilizing ample sociological acumen. Thus the book is informative enough for the student of sociology and is readable enough for the non-sociologist. Kurtz discusses the challenges encountered by the world's religions and the responses they make to pluralism, modernism, and social conflict. I especially appreciated the discussion of religion's response to violence and the rise of feminism, both not inconsiderable issues in today's world, but seldom treated in previous texts. I would have liked to have seen something about Sikhism, the dissemination of Native American tradition, and more about newer religions. Any reader may have his or her own favorite. If all were included the book would be a library and probably not yet available. We can only hope for further work on religion from this author. Useful for the students of religion as well as of sociology and likely to provide fertile discussion. This is the kind of book I longed to read for years. This is a book I will assign.

excellent text on the sociology of religion
By A Customer
Summary:
This is really more of a textbook on the sociology of religion than anything else. As such, it is not particularly conducive to summation (too many topics; too much information).

However, there are two things worth noting about the contents. First, the book goes to great lengths to look at religion from a global perspective, which I found to be invaluable and informative, especially considering how uncommon it is to do so. The second point is similar - the book doesn't focus on just Christianity or U.S. religion. The book compares, contrasts, and examines all of the major world religions- Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism. There isn't really more emphasis on one than another; they pretty much receive equal treatment, which is also unusual.

Comments:
The fact that the book looks at all of the major world religions rather than focusing on just Christianity, which is early on outlined as the book's objective (a global perspective), is refreshing and likely very informative for students in the U.S. who typically are somewhat ignorant of life outside of their country.

It is also nice that the author, Lester Kurtz, reveals his personal religious biases to begin with. His wife and kids are Jewish, but as a family they predominantly worship at Quaker worship services. His interest in the Quaker religion is revealed, to a degree, by his treatment of Ghandi. Not only is the treatment quite extensive, but Ghandi is idolized for his peaceful tactics (not that I disagree with this approach, I just found it revealing of the author's biases). Also, the final chapter, though well-written and not particularly overt, is definitely Kurtz's attempt to spread a message of peace. He doesn't necessarily attack religions for their history of justifying violence, but he definitely hopes this history is nearing its end.

Despite being well-written and offering an informative global perspective, there are a couple of problems with the book. First, there is only minimal treatment of secularization. Lacking is a discussion of neo-secularization (Chaves 1994), though admittedly much of this was happening while Kurtz was writing the book. Also, though the debate continues, there is definitely much more evidence for the existence of secularization in the U.S. than is presented in the text.

The book also gives the impression that it isn't possible to have values/morals without religion. I'm guessing this isn't the intention of the author as he tends to be fairly objective, but it is implied in several locations. I also found the author's usage of scripture, the Bible in particular, disturbing. He goes in and out of using the Bible as historical and metaphorical and never specifically states which perspective he is employing at any given point. For instance, Kurtz uses the story of Moses coming to power as the leader of the Children of Israel to make a point about religions generally, but also seems to conclude that the story is historically accurate. Whether he really believes it is or not isn't clear.

Finally, the author has a tendency to drift off onto theoretical tangents that at times are more rambling than coherent. These occurrences are few and far between, but when they do happen you find yourself wondering how you arrived where you are.

Overall, I highly recommend this book as a text for a course on the sociology of religion. The book is for the most part accurate, well-written, and clear (I know he missed one point with Mormons, but I didn't find many other flaws). The book isn't without its problems, but they are truly minimal compared to the synthesis of a global perspective on religions he has produced in writing this book.

Class Textbook

I am taking a Sociology class on religion and this book is easy to read. It gets the point across without going too in depth. Great for someone just being introduced to the many religions in the world.

Review
"Establishing school-family-community partnerships to promote the social, emotional, and academic learning of students is the most important challenge for 21st-century education. In this volume, leading practitioners and researchers compellingly convey the rationale and inspiration for these partnerships. They also share many practical, innovative, and effective strategies that readers can readily implement to engage partners in raising knowledgeable, responsible, caring, and contributing children." (Roger P. Weissberg, Liberal Arts and Sciences Distinguished Professor 2010-01-05)

"This is a wonderful resource for all levels of educational leaders, new or seasoned. The foundational concepts, research-based strategies, and real-life examples offer useful information for involving families in schooling and student learning. Additionally, the attention paid to the values, attitudes, and behaviors of families is much appreciated. This is not a recipe book. Rather, it is a compilation of what matters for thoughtfully engaging all families." (Jean West Lewis, Family and Community Outreach Specialist 2010-02-02)

"It takes leadership to establish mutually respectful and responsible family-school partnerships. This book is very timely because the authors provide insight about how this leadership might take shape and offer guidance for establishing effective partnerships that engage families in the academic lives of their children. The guidance is based on real experiences in schools and districts. This book moves us forward―together." (Jeana Preston, Director, California Parent Center 2010-02-09)

"This important collection of papers by many of the nation’s educational leaders provides specific and concrete ideas that practitioners can use to support the whole school community and the whole child." (Jonathan Cohen, President 2010-02-09)

"It is rare to find a book on family and community involvement that is insightfully sensitive to the needs of parents. This book offers clear examples and methods to create authentic partnerships that will benefit everyone, especially our children.” (Barbara Flis, Founder 2010-02-09)

From Conflicting Visions to Systematic Improvment
By Jenny Johnson
In Curriculum Theory: Conflicting Visions and Enduring Concerns, Michael Stephen Schiro provides a rigorous description and outlook on the major curriculum ideologies that have developed over the 20th century and that still largely impact our education system today. The four curriculum ideologies identified are Scholar Academic, Social Efficiency, Learner Centered, and Social Reconstruction. Schiro reminds the readers that our actions, as educators and curriculum developers, are largely a combination of the characteristics of each ideology and furthermore, that our beliefs may still be centered on one ideology. In the introduction, readers are asked to complete a short inventory that allows them to visually graph their curriculum actions and beliefs. This gives you, as a reader, a perspective of how your experiences have impacted the lens for which you view education. Then as you continue to read, you will notice your lens broadening and shifting based on the perspectives you gain through each chapter. This is the purpose of the text, as described by Schiro (2013). The purpose is “provide readers with a sympathetic perspective on the visions of schooling” and “give readers a perspective on their own philosophies of education” (p. 3). As an educator in the current reform movement, I found these aims largely vital in ensuring systematic improvement in our schools.
The four middle chapters go into detail over each curriculum ideology. In each chapter, Schiro outlines the ideology’s educational aims, view of children, perspective on learning, concept of teaching, epistemological beliefs of knowledge, and concerns of assessment and evaluation. Throughout the chapter, your understanding the ideology’s conceptual framework is further developed through a thorough description of the historical framework. The historical framework provides readers with an understanding of how the ideologies have developed, major influences of the ideologies’ development, and how the ideologies have altered throughout the last century. Furthermore, Schiro’s extensive overview of the ideologies’ conceptual framework provides the readers with a thorough understanding in order to make adjustments and/or shifts in personal curriculum beliefs situated among the ideologies. The final two chapters assist the readers in further exploring the interaction of the ideologies and the dynamic nature of change in our own beliefs and the coalesced beliefs of our education system.
In the concluding statement of the text, Schiro states, “And I hope this perspective will provide educators with the personal insights and power they need to make themselves into the people they want to be as they confront the multiple visions for the future of education that compete for their allegiance” (p. 261). This statement exemplifies the future of educational reform. Exceptional leadership begins first by becoming more reflective in our actions and thoughts through “personal insights” and identification of our core beliefs. It is through this process, that we begin to possess the skills needed in order to create a shared vision for our school based on collective ideologies. Moreover, it is through this shared vision that we are able to develop a culture of continuous improvement. Schiro’s extensive text will provide teacher leaders with an understanding of the dynamic nature of change and systematic thinking in order to respect each ideology’s strengths and weaknesses and move forward with an action plan of improvement.

Exploring Ideologies and Reflecting on Self
By Melissa Holmes
This second edition of Michael Schiro’s (2013) text is designed to provide a thorough discussion of four distinct curriculum ideologies: Scholar Academic, Social Efficiency, Learner Centered, and Social Reconstruction. Schiro’s writing is easy to read and his earnest tone helps draws the reader into personal reflection on the topic. The first chapter includes a brief overview of each ideology and describes the intended audience, which includes curriculum practitioners, disseminators, evaluators, advocates, developers, and theorists. He clearly explains how he selected to use ideology rather than philosophy, and he describes the alignment of his classification scheme with those of other researchers. Readers are encouraged at the beginning of the chapter to complete the inventory included in the appendix as a pre-assessment of their perspectives on curriculum.

For each of the four highlighted ideologies, Schiro provides a chapter that follows a specified structure. Each includes an overview of the ideology along with an example of how the ideology is enacted in current classroom practice. He details assumptions of the ideology and explains its historical context. Schiro explores the perspective of the given ideology in relation to the following topics:
• Aims
• Child
• Learning
• Teaching
• Knowledge
• Evaluation
Although this structure often results in unnecessary repetition of various ideas, readers likely will appreciate Schiro’s efforts to provide a multifaceted view the complexities surrounding each ideology. He embeds discussion related to current controversies in education. Issues explored have ramifications for all levels of education, including K-12 and post-secondary settings.

The sixth chapter provides a comparative overview of the four curriculum ideologies. Schiro compares and contrasts the ideologies, considering, for example, relationships between sources and uses of knowledge as well as relationships between objective and subjective reality. The ideologies are brought to life for readers through mini-plays that illustrate how teachers who hold beliefs reflective of each of the different ideologies might discuss various curricular issues related to their daily instruction.

In the final chapter of this text, Schiro encourages readers to revisit the Curriculum Ideologies Inventory to determine if any of their views have changed. He discusses educators’ curriculum life histories and explains a variety of factors that might lead an educator to emphasize different ideologies at different points in his or her career. He also addresses questions such as, “Can an educator simultaneously base his or her practice on more than one ideology?” Included in this thought-provoking chapter are short summaries of multiple educators’ journeys with curriculum ideologies that illustrate points discussed.

Overall, this text met my expectations and prompted me to engage in reflection on my views about curriculum and the role of education in general. I appreciated the additional sources on which Schiro based his discussions; at times, however, he relied too heavily on a given source. In addition, this text would benefit from thorough copyediting to correct the numerous typos that distracted from an otherwise well written book.

Like me, Learner Centered person believes that experiential knowledge ...
By abdullah alrashed
Asma Bin Ateeq

Before reading Curriculum theory: conflicting visions and enduring concerns, I understood myself and my philosophy of education, but it had not yet been deepened by exposure to different and quite progressive ways of thinking and form my clear philosophy. Now, my philosophy of education has become clearer and ethically aware and more willing to take appropriate risks also. I have a greater vision for my sense of place in the world, as a teacher and a facilitator of understanding, wisdom, grace, creativity, peace, and liberation from righteous ignorance. Schiro presents in his book a four curriculum ideologies Scholar Academic Ideology, Social Efficiency Ideology, Learner Centered Ideology, and Social Reconstruction Ideology. In each ideologies has discussed the overview of the ideology, history, aims, the child, learning, knowledge, teaching, and evaluation. The last a couple chapters will be a comparison between the four ideologies and going more in depth of the individual perspective on the curriculum ideologies.
In Scholar Academic Ideology, chapter two, the teachers have to be experts about their subject. The teacher has to transfer all the knowledge to the students. Students would be required to memorize information and to learn in my opinion by rigid methods that were not serving them. Scholar Academic teachers are viewed the child as a mind and they are evaluating the children to check on them if they meet the standard.
Social Efficiency Ideology, in the chapter three, Schiro discussed the goal of this ideology which is training the citizens/students to meet the society needs. The educators who are believing in that are pushing their student to gain skills by doing and practice them. They are also view learning as process and throughout these process the students will be able to change and improve. The teacher here is a leader who is leading, controlling the students, and giving them formative and summative evaluation.
One clear ideologies that exemplifies these advantages and is an intellectual model to me is Learner Centered Ideology which is chapter four. It is the one that has had the most impact on me as an educator and a woman. I want to use and practice Learner Centered Ideology with my future kindergarten students because it is the closest match to my views on teaching, education, and schools as possible. Learner Centered believed in growth of individuals as an important way to develop children’s intrinsic capabilities. Like me, Learner Centered person believes that experiential knowledge is essential for all students. I, too, believe in the cultivation of experience of as a way to access greater brain and vision capacity. Through the process of learning, I believe that higher, more mysterious, intuitive, and free aspects of the brain’s functioning can be allowed to flow out. This can also help students to construct their knowledge through assimilation and accommodation. I feel a kinship with Learner Centered people because they are working in search of refinement of vision of each individual students. Learner Centered Ideology teaches us that children are capable of great things and that we should invest in them in the right ways, from where they are. To me, it is the closest match to me in terms of ideas about making progress in the field of education.
Social Reconstruction education model which is chapter five is imbued with the kind of sensitivity that is fit for our ever more multiracial and multicultural situations worldwide. It is suitable for the world as it is today, and more than that, it anticipates some of the doctrinal problems and imbalances, politically, religiously, and economically. Social reconstruction people are preparing themselves for the role of high-level social reformer. They are working really hard for experiencing the world. They believe in the knowledge as a way of developing sensitivity and empathy, and they have the foresight to see that it would act as a kind of bridge for intimate relationship with culture, environment, and people. Through education, people could come to appreciate aspects of other cultures while understanding their own cultural position. For me, this is a part of my philosophy and I would want my students to be able to understand themselves and their identity as well as their place in the world. There is a lot of world out there and I am really looking forward to opening my students’ eyes, beyond country, beyond cultural barriers.

Schiro’s ideas have had an impact in my own curriculum development and teaching style, such that the old ways of working with my students that has no certain ideology seem so thoughtless and obsolete. Ultimately, I hope that education at all levels would reach the point where Schiro hopes to take us, in which four philosophical visions can coexist for students and their teachers.

Review
"I finally had an opportunity this weekend to review the fourth edition of Lee and Kotler's Social Marketing: Influencing Behaviors for Good. What a treat to see an entirely new set of case examples that cover a wide range of social marketing applications. The book also incorporates new ideas from disciplines beyond traditional marketing borders, such as behavioral economics. Most importantly, the book retains its solid pedagogical approach, with clear explanations of social marketing's principles and the steps that make up the strategic planning process. Even if you have a copy of a previous edition, I recommend you add this one to your bookshelf."

Kudo's to Nancy Lee and Philip Kotler for this outstanding book. As a university educator I found it to be very thorough, starting with a thorough discussion defining social marketing and explaining how social marketing differs from commercial marketing. The authors go on to outline steps to develop a social marketing plan, how to evaluate and select target audiences, crafting positioning, and so much more. The book has excellent hands-on case examples and a wealth of social media resources. Excellent work! An Excellent Introduction to Social Marketing
By Chrysostom
This textbook is a clearly presented and extremely useful introduction to the principles of social marketing, written by two of the premier practitioners in the field today. (Philip Kotler largely invented the discipline of social marketing in the 1970s.) It outlines the concepts behind the construction of an effective social marketing strategy, using real-life case studies as examples. The text is easy to read and is supplemented with numerous illustrations. Particularly helpful is a set of planning worksheets in the back which lay out in order the steps needed to develop an effective social marketing plan.

Consumer Behavior and Culture: Consequences for Global Marketing and Advertising, by Marieke de Mooij

The Second Edition of this popular text brings up-to-date Marieke de Mooij's important analysis of the impact of culture on consumer behavior worldwide. The author shows how it is increasingly vital for marketing students―tomorrow's marketing professionals―to understand the limits of consistent brand identities and universal advertising campaigns. Consumer behavior is not converging across countries, and therefore it is of even greater importance to understand, and be able to respond to, differences in behavior. This edition offers a new chapter, Chapter 7, on culture, communication, and media behavior that extends the prior edition's discussion on communication theories and advertising styles to cover differences in media usage worldwide, particularly the use of the Internet.

Review

"Marieke de Mooij shows that American theories of consumer behavior do not necessarily apply abroad. Her national consumption data are an unobtrusive measure of national cultures. She has made marketing students discover culture, and her work should make cross-cultural psychologists discover the consumer as an informant."

(Geert Hofstede)

"Prof. De Mooij helps the reader navigate unknown landscapes through interesting anecdotes. Where she goes beyond anecdotes, are the solid analyses around a well-tested statistical model for understanding cultures. Dr de Mooij has written a timely book, one that adds tremendously to informed debate on what culture means for consumption. For practitioners, be they in academia or business, it demonstrates once again exactly how rich insights can be extracted from rigorous data. It is an exhortation to go beyond the first conclusion that springs to mind. Finally, as citizens of a rapidly developing country , all Indian readers would be grateful to the author for asserting what we have always thought but have seldom been encouraged to believe that we are representatives of unique history, heritage and culture. And that being Indian is not a cause for being defensive on the Global Arena." (Sushobhan Mukherjee 2007-05-09)

Handbook for global marketers
By Alex Pun
Consumer Behavior and Culture-Consequences for Global Marketing and Advertising is a handbook for all global marketers and the researches that did the cross cultural research especially in consumer behavior. As the author, Marieke de Mooij is the fellow of Hofstede, in this book therefore, mostly the Hofstede: Five Dimensions of National Culture is fully explained and utilized. De Mooij tried to explain every aspect in consumer behavior by these dimension, especially individualism vs collectivism, power distance, uncertainty avoidance. For marketers, understand these three dimensions can understand the characteristic of the value, lifestyle and even the attitude towards the objects.
This book unlike other consumer behavior textbook, it does not only describe the basic consumer behavior theories and models but also have lots of application and more focus on culture aspects.
De Mooij also provides lots of examples and successful cases to illustrate the concept. And some positioning maps are also used especially the country positioning. She has tried to use the map to illustrate the culture feature in different countries, such approaches can help marketers to compare the distance among different countries and learn how to adjust and localize their strategies in specific market.
Moreover, the author specific designs some chapters for global marketers. In those chapters, marketers can learn the characteristic of that market customers, and how to base on that unique feature to design the marketing strategies i.e. brand, product and price and advertising strategies i.e. media.
For researcher, this is a good book, the author has described the research methodology for culture-comparison, other than that, she has collected lots of secondary data to support the new data, therefore, the knowledge provided is very comprehensive. In every category like clothing, coffee and automobile, she also mentioned some tips for researchers to do research in that specific area. Some limitations of existing research findings are raised, which help the researches to remind some major limitations and the room for future research.
Overall speaking, the content is very comprehensive, and the description and analysis are good enough for readers to understand the concepts. Moreover, the main points and the sub points are clearly defined, which bring lots of convenient to the readers.
In conclusion, Consumer Behavior and Culture is a handbook for marketers and researchers, and at this moment, there is no other books can substitute it.

Statistics makes sense now!
By G. Jones
Field does an excellent job in offering statistics in plain 'ole English. I am a grad student and my only introduction to SPSS and stats was about 8 years ago in undergrad. I currently have 2 other texts for my class that are mandatory and I invested in this text despite it not being on the book list because I heard great reviews. It has lived up to those reviews and even more! I find that I first read the Field text on the weekly topic then read the other required readings. It's awesome because after reading this text, everything makes sense, I'm better prepared for the lecture and sometimes I can even skip the required readings from the other two texts. Definitely worth the investment!

Must have!
By J. Wayman
Andy Field explains statistical concepts in a way that are fun and easy to understand. It can be very difficult to make an often dreaded topic interesting and comical, but this book does just that. Andy Field has accomplished the impossible. This book is a must have for anyone taking statistics, anyone interested in learning more about research, and especially learning how statistical concepts and studies can be evaluated using the program IBM SPSS. No other book compares. I am a Ph.D. student so I know a lot about the books and resources available within this subject, as I have purchased them and utilized them for my courses. You will not regret purchasing this book. It is invaluable!

Humorous
By Lacey
There are some funny examples in this, and generally has FAIRLY easy to follow directions for things you're wanting to for in SPSS. However, I DOOOOOOOOOOOOO hate SPSS and would recommend looking for a different program if you have the option. It is nice that this comes with the student version of SPSS. Know that this is adequate for many things, but it does limit the number of variables you can use.
