Classical and Contemporary Sociological Theory: Text and Readings, by Scott Appelrouth, Laura D. (Desfor) Edles

Classical and Contemporary Sociological Theory is a "hybrid" between a core textbook and a primary source reader. This book builds on the authors' Sociological Theory in the Classical Era and Sociological Theory in the Contemporary Era, to combine the major writings of sociology's core classical and contemporary theorists with an historical and theoretical framework for understanding them. It provides not just a biographical and theoretical summary of each theorist/reading, but, in addition, an overarching scaffolding which students can use to examine, compare, and contrast each theorists' major themes and concepts. No other theory text combines such "student-friendly" explanation and analysis with original theoretical works.

Review

“The format of this text is exceptional, and on that the discipline sorely needs.  The authors present thorough biographical and historical backgrounds relevant to each theorist and her/his theories. I believe this is essential to learning and understanding theory…the authors use examples that will aid students in shaping their ability to see theory in their lives.”

(Chris Ponticelli 2008-02-01)

“I am thrilled by the hybrid approach. I think the authors’ approach is right on – they are right: we do need a reader which has solid primary source material but is embedded in historical and theoretical discussion and explication. I think the text/reader combination is highly attractive – especially for professors teaching at big public institutions I think this approach will be happily received and widely appreciated.”

(Phil Zuckerman 2008-02-01)

“I am very impressed by the coverage in this reader.  I think the selections are excellent for both the classical and contemporary time periods.”

(James P. Marshall 2008-02-01)

“…the readers will be quite appealing to both students and instructors – much better than what is currently available.”

(Julie Harms Cannon 2008-02-01)

Comprehensive Sociological Theory Text
By sleepyscout
I've reviewed over ten (10) textbooks for the advanced ungraduate course I teach on sociological theory. Among them, this book is exceptional. Sociological theory texts fall into one of two camps: those that are collections of primary source material and those that are secondary analyses/interpretations of texts (this includes more narrowly-focus texts on "classical" and "contemporary" theory). In the past, I used one text from each camp. Rather than two texts, this semester I tried Appelrouth and it's turned out marvellously.

This text begins each chapter with an overall summary of some of the main themes in a theorist's work, then provides a collection of critical primary source readings for a theorist. Each sample of a primary source text is preceeded by a brief narrative that helps students identify the main points that will be referenced in the piece. The collection is very thorough and goes beyond many other primary source collection-type texts. These two aspects of the text: a solid, but very basic summary, and a thorough collection of primary source readings, make this the text I will continue to use in subsequent semesters teaching the course. I also really appreciate the sections on "Expanding the Foundation" and "Broadening Sociological Theory" that include theorists like DuBois, Gilman, Butler, Foucault, Bourdieu, and Said. This makes for a very dynamic class.

I only have two relatively minor criticisms. First, the introductory chapter frames an analyses that guides each chapter's summary, which locates theorists on an continuum between emphasis on rational vs nonrational, and individual vs collective. Of course I "get" the frame, but I'm not sure students would understand it until they complete the course. I felt it would be more trouble to explain and stick to this frame than just disregard it. The frame is repeated so frequently that I'm sometimes annoyed by it. Second, if you're using this course to teach, be prepared to go beyond the brief summary for each primary source reading. There's a lot in the primary (such as assumptions, concepts of a secondary order, and criticisms) that don't make it into the brief summary. That's ok. I'm prepared to encourage students to find meaning and do this work they can't do. If you're teaching theory for the first time, however, I'd probably prepare my lectures using Ritzer's more advanced analysis (the classic Sociological Theory text).

I guess if I had a third criticism, it would be the level of instructor support offered by SAGE (The publisher of this text). They offer test banks, lecture slides, discussion questions and writing exercises, but the latter two have been relatively useless and the slides are very wordy. In contrast, McGraw (Ritzer's publisher) has an instructor site that includes more useful chapter summaries and chapter learning objectives. I've referred back to these sources repeatedly in order to frame my arguements for lecture. In summary, use this text for your students. Use Ritzer to prepare lectures and/or for a graduate class. If you're teaching at the graduate level, however, you'll definitely need additional primary source readings.

Great book. Chapter on Critical Theory (The Frankfurt Institute for Social Research) is a bit too abbreviated and seems a little too short and does not contain a full focus on the positive contributions The Frankfurt School has had on society.

It is a well written, interesting and comprehensive book. The history given on each of the theorists and the explanations proceeding excerpts of their major works are very helpful.
