About the Author

Jacinta M. Gau received her Ph.D. from Washington State University in 2008 and is currently Associate Professor in the Department of Criminal Justice at the University of Central Florida, where she teaches, among other topics, doctoral-level quantitative methods and undergraduate research methods. Her research is primarily in policing, with an emphasis on police-community relations, race issues, and procedural justice and police legitimacy. Her published articles have appeared in multiple journals. She is co-author of the book Key Ideas in Criminology and Criminal Justice, published by SAGE, and co-editor of Race and Justice: An International Journal, also published by SAGE.

The best plan that I could come with was to turn ...

I am math illiterate. I had a statistics class 10 years in undergrad and it was the hardest I had ever worked in a class to get a B. I am taking a Master's level statistics class for criminology and criminal justice and I have a not-so-wonderful professor who does not even use a book. The best plan that I could come with was to turn to Amazon and find the best statistics book for CRCJ with the best reviews. This was it. And in two days I read over 8 chapters of this book and passed my statistics mid-term. The author makes it much easier to understand what is going on in class and I found it as a very valuable resource. In addition, I would recommend getting on YouTube and watching videos where people work out the problems and explain the problems to you. Get this book if you are struggling with statistics. Worth the price!

About the Author

Linda L. Putnam is a Research Professor in the Department of Communication at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Her current research interests include discourse analysis in organizations, negotiation and organizational conflict, and gender.  She is the co-editor of twelve books, including The SAGE Handbook of Organizational Communication (2014), Building Theories of Organization: The Constitutive Role of Communication (2009) and the author/co-author of over 180 journal articles and book chapters. She is a Distinguished Scholar of the National Communication Association, a Fellow of the International Communication Association, and a recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from the Academy of Management.

 

Dennis K. Mumby (Ph.D., M.A., Southern Illinois University; BA, Sheffield Hallam University) is Professor and Chair of Communication Studies at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a Fellow of UNC’s Institute for the Arts and Humanities. His research focuses on the relationships among discourse, power, gender, and organizing. A Fellow of the International Communication Association and a National Communication Association Distinguished Scholar, he has published six books and over 50 articles in the area of critical organization studies, and his work has appeared in journals such as Academy of Management Review, Management Communication Quarterly, Communication Monographs, Discourse & Society, and Human Relations. He is past chair of the Organizational Communication Division of NCA, a six-time winner of the division’s annual research award, and a recipient of the division’s Fredric M. Jablin Award for contributions to the field of organizational communication.

Overall, Great Addition.

Overall, I think this new version of the handbook is very well thought out. I do have a few problems with some of the directions the content took. As I am an Org Comm social scientist, I'm amazed at how much of the book is now specifically geared towards interpretive and critical understandings of organizational communication. The most recent analysis of the research in Org Comm still demonstrated that quantitative research accounted for more than 50% of the content published within the field. However, this book is clearly not representative of the actual state of Org Comm today. Personally, I think the editor's skewed the book (probably unconsciously) in a single direction that isn't truly representative of the field today.

About the Author
Robert Szafran is Regents Professor of Sociology in the Department of Social and Cultural Analysis at Stephen F. Austin State University in Texas. He has received both College and University Excellence in Teaching Awards. About the Author
After an early career as primary teacher and school principal, Ernest T. Stringer was lecturer in education at Curtin University of Technology in Western Australia. From the mid-eighties, based at Curtin’s Centre for Aboriginal Studies, he worked collaboratively with Aboriginal staff and community people to develop a wide variety of innovative and highly successful education and community development programs and services. His work with government departments, community-based agencies, business corporations and local governments assisted them to work more effectively with Aboriginal people. In recent years, as visiting professor at the University of New Mexico and Texas A&M University, he taught research methods courses and engaged in projects with African American and Hispanic community and neighborhood groups. As a UNICEF consultant he recently engaged in a major project to increase parent participation in the schools in East Timor. He is author of the texts “Action Research (Sage 2007),” “Action Research in Education (Pearson 2008),” “Action Research in Health” (with Bill Genat, Pearson 2004), and “Action Research in Human Services” (with Rosalie Dwyer, Pearson 2005). He is a member of the editorial board of the Action Research Journal and Past President of the Action Learning and Action Research Association (ALARA).

Joseph A. Maxwell is an Associate Professor in the Graduate School of Education at George Mason University, where he teaches courses on research design and methods.  He is the author of Qualitative Research Design: An Interactive Approach (Sage, 1996), as well as papers on qualitative methodology, mixed method research, socio-cultural theory, and medical education.  He has also worked extensively in applied settings.  He has given seminars and workshops on teaching qualitative research methods and on using qualitative methods in various applied fields, and has been an invited speaker at conferences and universities in the U.S., Puerto Rico, Europe, and China.  He has a Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Chicago. 

John W. Creswell is a Professor of Educational Psychology at Teachers College, University of Nebraska-Lincoln.  He is affiliated with a graduate program in educational psychology that specializes in quantitative and qualitative methods in education.  In this program, he specializes in qualitative and quantitative research designs and methods, multimethod research, and faculty and academic leadership issues in colleges and universities.

About the Author
Greg Guest received his Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Georgia.  Over the past 15 years, he has designed and managed public health research studies in more than 15 countries.  Greg is currently the Director of Research and Evaluation in the Economic Development and Livelihoods department at FHI 360.  In this capacity he oversees multisite, mixed methods, research and evaluation activities across multiple fields of public health.  Guest's other books include two edited volumes―Globalization, Health and the Environment: An Integrated Perspective (AltaMira, 2005) and Handbook for Team- Based Qualitative Research (AltaMira 2008)―and two co-authored monographs Applied Thematic Analysis (Sage 2012) and Collecting Qualitative Data: A Field Manual for Applied Research (Sage 2013). He's published articles in journals such as Field Methods, Journal of Mixed Methods Research, American Journal of Public Health, JAIDS, AIDS Care, AIDS Education and Prevention, African Journal of AIDS Research, AIDS and Behavior, Journal of Family Planning and Reproductive Health Care and Journal of Health Communication.  Guest is also owner of the research consulting firm Social Research Solutions, which specializes in methodological training and consultation (www.socialresearchsolutions.com).

Emily E. Namey, MA, has over 10 years’ experience applying her skills in project management and knowledge of research methods to the design, implementation, conduct, monitoring, and dissemination of public health research. Emily recently  rejoined FHI 360, where she manages domestic and international qualitative and mixed methods projects related to health disparities and HIV prevention. Prior to her work at FHI 360, she spent over 5 years at Duke University, splitting time among the Institute for Genome Sciences and Policy, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and the Trent Center for Bioethics. At Duke, Emily implemented qualitative research on subjects ranging from maternity care to vaccine trial participation to ethical approaches to genomic research recruitment to the use and understanding of Certificates of Confidentiality. She has experience in the private sector as well, having completed projects at Intel Corporation and Nike, Inc. Emily has designed and led qualitative research training courses in more than a dozen countries and has co-authored several methodological publications, including Collecting Qualitative Data (Sage 2012), Applied Thematic Analysis (Sage 2012), Qualitative Research Methods: A Data Collector’s Field Guide (Family Health International, 2005) and “Data reduction techniques for large qualitative datasets” in Handbook for Team-based Qualitative Research (AltaMira  2008).  Her publications also include articles in Social Science & Medicine, Fertility and Sterility, AIDS Care, IRB, and the Journal of Empirical Research on Human Research Ethics. Emily received her MA in applied anthropology from Northern Arizona University.

Marilyn L. Mitchell is a cultural anthropologist with extensive experience in quantitative and qualitative research design, interviewing techniques, cultural analysis, survey development, sampling, and forecasting. She works as an independent researcher and as an associate of Gray Insight, for clients that have included dozens of Fortune 500 companies, educational institutions, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations in the United States and nearly 100 other countries. She has lectured on social science research and related topics at University of California, Los Angeles , University of Southern California, San Francisco State University, the Nissan Summer Institute for Instructors at Historically Black Colleges, Chapman University, the U.S. Army’s Human Terrain Systems, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Marilyn earned her BA, MA, and PhD in cultural anthropology and BS in biology from the University of California at Irvine and conducted her dissertation research at the National Museum of Ethnology in Osaka, Japan. She is also the author of Employing Qualitative Methods in the Private Sector (Sage, 1998).

For me the comprehensive nature of the text is most important – even when I don’t cover topics in class students gain value by being able to read about cluster analysis or ROC analysis in enough detail that they can conduct their own analyses. Students appreciate the integration with SPSS. About the Author
Lawrence S. Meyers earned his doctorate in experimental psychology and has been a Professor in the Psychology Department at California State University, Sacramento, for a number of years. He supervises research students and teaches research design courses as well as history of psychology at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. His areas of expertise include test development and validation.

Glenn Gamst is Professor and Chair of the Psychology Department at the University of La Verne, where he teaches the doctoral advanced statistics sequence. His research interests include the effects of multicultural variables on clinical outcome. Additional research interests focus on conversation memory and discourse processing. He received his PhD in experimental psychology from the University of Arkansas.

A. J. Guarino is a professor of biostatistics at Massachusetts General Hospital, Institute of Health Professions. He is the statistician on numerous National Institutes of Health grants and a reviewer on several research journals. He received his BA from the University of California, Berkeley, and a PhD in statistics and research methodologies from the Department of Educational Psychology, the University of Southern California.

Difficult on Kindle

This is a review of the Kindle edition.

First, I now know that this is a reference book. My professor makes us read it, but, in the long run, this will be used to look up specific techniques during my thesis work and (hopefully) future research.

While the Kindle makes searching for text easy, it is horrible for academic work. It does not show the actual page numbers from the physical book, meaning I cannot include a citation from this book in any paper I write. Epic Fail on the academic front.

Second, the book is a large format book, including lots of diagrams and charts. It does not translate well to the screen of a Microsoft Surface Pro, or to an external 14" monitor. For me, it is difficult to read when I have to jump a few Kindle pages to find a diagram, then jump back to the page I was reading. I find it much easier to do this in the physical version.

perfect for learning advance statistics

I used this for one of my graduate statistics courses and found it easy to understand. The chapters begin with a conceptual view of each statistical analysis and then show you how to run it using SPSS and SAS. This is now my "go to" book when I'm running data analysises.

This book offers the possibility to understand the mathematical principles behind multivariate research and the practical tips to achieve the most accurate results with SPSS and AMOS. It's very simple on its writing style and I reccomend it to all researchers interested on this kind of topics.
