About the Author

David B. Spangler is the recipient of the 2014 Lee E. Yunker Mathematics Leadership Award, sponsored by the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics. The award honors an Illinois teacher for providing outstanding resources to mathematics teachers. David has devoted his professional career of more than 40 years to mathematics education. He began as a middle-school mathematics teacher in an individualized setting. Later he taught at Triton Community College, where he gained direct experience interacting with struggling students in a developmental math laboratory. Currently he teachers mathematics methods courses through National-Louis University and ActiveMath Workshops, a professional development company he co-founded in 1994 (activemath.com). Some of the methods courses and workshops he facilitates address special needs students, intervention, computation, and error analysis at the elementary level. His workshops are designed to help teachers implement the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. David has literally worked with thousands of students and teachers during his career.

For many years David has worked as a mathematics textbook editor at the K–12 level. He has authored several books and has written numerous articles for mathematics journals, such as the popular "Cartoon Corner" for Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School.

As an educator, David’s goal has always been to teach mathematics for meaning rather than in a way that promotes rote memorization. Strategies for Teaching Whole Number Computation and Strategies for Teaching Fractions were written to help teachers achieve that goal. David’s other professional goals include exploring ways to teach mathematics through engaging, real-world applications and to explore humorous aspects to mathematics, especially mathematical blunders that illustrate mathematics illiteracy. David is a frequent speaker at conferences of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and other professional organizations, addressing teaching mathematics for meaning, teaching mathematics through real-world applications, and teaching mathematics through humor. He also delivers after-dinner talks on the subject of mathematical humor.

David lives with his wife, Bonnie, in Northbrook, Illinois. They have three grown children, Ben, Jamie, and Joey.

Great Book!

This is exactly what I've been looking for! I teach 8th grade math and consistently come across students who struggle with fractions. I plan on using this for my small-group interventions. I have already administered the diagnostic test, and I am looking forward to the interventions described in the book.

Great Book for Learning and Teaching Fractions

I bought this book because I often struggle with fractions myself as a elementary special education teacher. Learning about benchmark fractions (0, 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, 2/3, 3/4, 1) opened my eyes. I aced the assessment in the book, and now I have a great tool to help my students. Perfect for grades 3-8 and anyone hoping to get better with fractions. The book includes great assessment tools, intervention lessons, and educational games. They are copy ready! I couldn't have asked for a better book to teach fractions! It comes highly recommended. I can't wait to use it with my students.

About the Author

Fred E. Jandt was born of second-generation German immigrants in the multicultural south-central region of Texas. After graduating from Texas Lutheran University and Stephen F. Austin State University, he received his doctorate in communication from Bowling Green State University. He has taught and been a student of intercultural communication for more than 40 years, developing his experience through travel and international training and research projects. While Professor of Communication at The College at Brockport, State University of New York, his reputation as a teacher led to his appointment as SUNY’s first director of faculty development. He has retired as Dean of the Palm Desert Campus and Professor of Communication at California State University, San Bernardino, where he was named Outstanding Professor. He has also been a visiting professor at Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand. He has extensive experience in the areas of intercultural and international communication, negotiation mediation, and conflict management. He was one of the first scholars to introduce the study of conflict to the communication discipline with his text Conflict Resolution Through Communication (Harper & Row, 1973). He has subsequently published many other titles in this area, including the successful trade books Win-Win Negotiating: Turning Conflict Into Agreement (Wiley, 1985), which has been translated into eight languages, and a casebook on international conflict management, Constructive Conflict Management: Asia-Pacific Cases (SAGE, 1996) with Paul B. Pedersen. For several years, he conducted the training workshop “Managing Conflict Productively” for major corporations and government agencies throughout the United States. Jandt continues to train volunteers who are learning to become mediators in the California justice system.

About the Author

Marilyn Lichtman has taught courses in qualitative research for over 15 years. She also has a background in quantitative methods that will facilitate comparisons between the two methodologies. She serves on the editorial board of Forum: Qualitative Social Research [On-line Journal] and The Qualitative Report. She has co-authored a book for American School Counselor Association (1990) entitled The Best for Our Kids: Exemplary Elementary Guidance & Counseling Programs. She has also conducted numerous qualitative research studies for Cities in Schools (programs for at-risk high school students) and the Department of Defense Education Agency (schools at military installations worldwide), among others.

 

Lawrence A. Machi is a professor in the Department of Organizational Leadership at the University of La Verne. He teaches research methods and design and chairs doctoral dissertation research in addition to teaching classes in organizational development. Machi has extensive experience in higher education, having taught in schools of education at the University of San Francisco, St. Mary's College of California, and Sonoma State University prior to his tenure at the University of La Verne. Machi has also been a K-12 educator, having worked as a secondary teacher and served as a school administrator in both secondary and elementary school districts in Northern California. He has held the roles of vice principal, principal, assistant superintendent, and superintendent.

Machi has consulted with many California school districts and nonprofit organizations over the years. His specialties have been in the areas of finance, negotiations, and organizational development. He holds an MA in curriculum development and an EdD in organizational leadership.

About the Author
Barry Brummett is the Charles Sapp Centennial Professor in Communication and chair of the Department of Communication Studies at the University of Texas, Austin. He received his PhD from the University of Minnesota in 1978, and taught at Purdue University and the University of Wisconsin before coming to the University of Texas, Austin in 2001. Brummett has authored, coauthored, or edited numerous articles, scholarly essays, and books, including Contemporary Apocalyptic Rhetoric, Techniques of Close Reading, Rhetoric of Machine Aesthetics, and The Politics of Style and the Style of Politics. His research pursuits include the rhetoric of popular culture, epistemology, homologies relating the troubled physical structures represented in popular culture and troubled social structures, and the theories of Kenneth Burke.

Empowering students to use rhetoric to study popular culture

Barry Brummett's "Rhetoric in Popular Culture" seeks to bring the traditions of rhetorical criticism and critical studies together. Brummett applies the growing and cutting-edge methods of critical studies to the study of rhetoric, because he sees critical studies AS rhetorical criticism. This is a premise with which I whole-heartedly agree, which is not surprising given my interest in rhetoric and social theory. Part I consists of four chapters dealing with theoretical and methodological concerns. The extended case study is on the film version of "The Wizard of Oz," in which Brummett looks at how five critical methods (Marxist, feminist/psychoanalytic, dramatistic/narrative, media-centered, and culture-centered) would render different interpretations of Dorothy's trip over the rainbow. Part II provides three critical studies: "Paradoxes of Personalization: Race Relations in Milwaukee," "Twin Peeks: Using Theory in Two Analyses of Visual Pleasures" (by Brummett and Margaret Carlisle Duncan) and "Afrocentrism and 'DO THE RIGHT THING'" (by Detine L. Bowers).
Fortunately in this Postmodern world history is dead and most students are not aware of the rhetorical tradition that would disdain critical studies, not to mention popular culture. Consequently, Brummett does not have to convince students of the rightness of his cause, they are simply going to want to understand what he is talking about. Part I of this book is the stronger section, because Brummett's strength is in laying out his approach. Chapter 3, in which he looks at the key notion of "text," is the best one in the book. How you feel about Part II will come down to how relevant the specific case studies are to your students. Certainly "Do the Right Thing," despite its cultural importance once upon a time, would be considered "dated" by most students, although we might think it has again become relevant because of recent events. But Part I is basically two-thirds of the book, so I do not really think that this becomes a major consideration in deciding whether or not to use this book in class. Ultimately, the key consideration is going to be the sort of assignments you have the cherubs do off of the theories laid out in Part I. Brummet's point is that students should be empowered to "find the rhetoric in rap music, the motivations in heavy metal, and the arguments in argyle socks." That pretty much covers it all.

Kindle Edition Limitations

Unfortunately, Amazon doesn't make it possible to attach this review only to the Kindle Edition, but it's important this is posted so you can make an informed decision before buying.

I bought the kindle version this textbook, which I have done in past semesters without any issue, but this time the book has no page numbers. Instead they index the book with 4709 "locations". What this allows you to do is change the size of the text and it self-adjusts to always precisely fill the screen. This eliminates the need to scroll down and is actually a very nice feature.

Unfortunately, this flexibility means that there is no reference for the correlation between page numbers and "locations" and descriptions like "the middle of the page" are not constant (You can't even use the book's index because that still uses page numbers - thank goodness you can at least search the book!).

If this is a book for a class and the professor assigns the readings in chunks of pages vs. chapters then you will have no way of knowing what to read. Additionally, the Kindle format's DRM features lock you out from using text-to-speech (I'm on the mac kindle app) after a few pages because it interprets it as you copying the pages. So, if you suffer from eye strain like I do, you'll have do cringe your way through the reading. You also won't be able to cut and paste from the book then for use in your classwork.

In short, I should have just bought a paper edition. I recommend that's what you do too.

I ordered the third edition and was sent the second edition. Material is pretty much the same but the examples are different so i can't use my book for class.

George Ritzer is Distinguished University Professor at the University of Maryland, where he has also been a Distinguished Scholar-Teacher and won a Teaching Excellence Award. He was awarded the Distinguished Contributions to Teaching Award by the American Sociological Association, an honorary doctorate from LaTrobe University in Australia, and the Robin Williams Lectureship from the Eastern Sociological Society. His best-known work, The McDonaldization of Society (8th ed.), has been read by hundreds of thousands of students over two decades and translated into over a dozen languages. Ritzer is also the editor of McDonaldization: The Reader; and author of other works of critical sociology related to the McDonaldization thesis, including Enchanting a Disenchanted World, The Globalization of Nothing, Expressing America: A Critique of the Global Credit Card Society, as well as a series best-selling social theory textbooks and Globalization: A Basic Text. He is the Editor of the Encyclopedia of Social Theory (2 vols.), the Encyclopedia of Sociology (11 vols.; 2nd edition forthcoming), the Encyclopedia of Globalization (5 vols.), and is Founding Editor of the Journal of Consumer Culture. Interesting concept conveyed in a disappointingly average text

I took an Introduction to Sociology course that used both this and Jon Witt's The Big Picture: A Sociology Primer. While I found Witt's book to be engaging and informative to someone new to the field, I did not enoy Ritzer's book very much. Not to say he doesn't have good ideas, but I found the writing bland and, at times, overly technical.

Ritzer argues that the fast-food priciples epitomized by McDonald's - efficiency, calculability, predictability and control - are permeating society as a whole. He takes examples from the mundane (food shopping) to the extravagent (climbing Mount Everest) to the horrifyingly extreme (the Holocaust) to illustrate his point. He also devotes time to detailing how one can "deMcDonaldize" society. He also has extensive endnotes for further reading.

However, this book contains some very serious flaws. It is very obvious that Ritzer views this McDonaldization as a completely negative entity, glossing over the fact that, in non-extreme doses, some of those four priciples can be good things. His bias is so evident he goes as far to quote Weber and say that McDonaldization is leading us into a "polar night of icy darkness." I find it a little hard to take his text seriously when he uses such metaphors.

He also devotes a chapter to "Globalization and McDonaldization," which starts out well enough but ends up being little more than a plug for another of Ritzer's books that made my head hurt with its liberal use of jargon and confusing syntax ("Although the grobalization of nothing is at odds with the glocalization of something,... the grobalization of nothing is also at odds with the grobalization of something... there is no conflict between the grobalization and the glocalization of nothing." - The whole chapter reads like that).

And one more thing that bothered me - a pet peeve, I know, but still - was that the kerning (text spacing, or the space between the letters) is sometimes noticably different from page to page. As someone who has a passing knowledge of basic layout, this irked me.

This text conveys some very interesting concepts, but it is executed in a less-than-stellar manner. I'd take this book a chapter at a time to minimize frustration.

About the Author
Marcia L. Tate is the former executive director of professional development for the DeKalb County School System, Decatur, Georgia. During her 30-year career with the district, she has been a classroom teacher, reading specialist, language arts coordinator, and staff development executive director. She received the Distinguished Staff Development Award for the State of Georgia, and her department was chosen to receive the Exemplary Program Award for the state.

Tate is currently an educational consultant and has taught more than 350,000 administrators, teachers, parents, and business and community leaders throughout the world, including Australia, Egypt, Hungary, Singapore, Thailand, and New Zealand. She is the author of the following five bestsellers: Worksheets Don’t Grow Dendrites: 20 Instructional Strategies that Engage the Brain; “Sit & Get” Won’t Grow Dendrites: 20 Professional Learning Strategies That Engage the Adult Brain; Reading and Language Arts Worksheets Don’t Grow Dendrites: 20 Literacy Strategies that Engage the Brain; Shouting Won’t Grow Dendrites: 20 Techniques for Managing a Brain-compatible Classroom; and Mathematics Worksheets Don’t Grow Dendrites: 20 Numeracy Strategies that Engage the Brain, co-written with Warren Phillips, one of the best science teachers in the country. Snipets not meaningful detailed direction

I purchased this book in hopes that it would be a good resource for my teachers. In my opinion it is a book full of small undeveloped ideas. For example page 19: Kindergaten-8 Before the lesson She writes: Go online to appropriate Web sites and access virtual field trips that pertain to a math concept being taught. Good idea but teachers with a degree seem to already know of this.
Next she writes: Grade 6-8 before the lesson Take students to observe people at work who use mathematics such as carpenters, landscape planners, and tailors. Small groups of students can be assigned to do this as homework with the help of their parents. then have them return to the class to share their discoveries about mathematics applications in the real world. Some direction, say maybe 4 open ended questions to give your students to answer about their observation might be useful... The children should have an idea of what to look for.
This was just a random page I opened to write this review. The pages seem to be all written the same. Ideas but no meat!
I don't know about you but when I look for resources for teachers who LACK THE TIME to create them I look for activities that are well developed and can be used in the classroom. My teachers already possess the knowledge of what to do and most times only need activities that encourage student generated responses that lead to deep conceptual understanding.

This is a good book if you want to add some spice to your instruction. It goes over 20 instructional strategies that are engaging and help kids remember content. Some are easy to try and others definitely more time consuming. It's a good resource.
