About the Author
Dr. Smilkstein speaks nationally and internationally on brain-compatible education. She has taught in middle school through graduate school including 28 years at North Seattle Community College. Currently Professor Emerita North Seattle Community College and invited faculty in Educational Psychology at Western Washington University's Woodring College of Education, Everett Campus. Publications include articles and books on brain-based curriculum and pedagogy. Author of We’re Born to Learn: Using the Brain’s Natural Learning Process to Create Curriculum (Corwin Press, 2003), which won the Delta Kappa Gamma International Society’s Educator’s Award of the Year, 2004; the second edition will be published in 2011. She is a co-author of Igniting Student Potential Using the Natural Human Learning Process (Corwin Press, 2007). M.A. (English, Michigan State University), Ph.D. (Educational Psychology, University of Washington). She has received many teaching awards, including the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development’s Excellence Award, 1991, 1995; the College Reading and Learning Association’s highest honor, the Robert Griffin Award, 2005; Induction as a Fellow of the American Council of Developmental Education Associations, 2006, the highest honor in the field of Developmental Education.

Brain-based Teaching need not upset the apple-cart

Dr. Smilkstein has explained how the brain attaches new learning to the neuron-networks established for the initial concept in each student's mind. She discusses how students are involved and interested when they know they are building new dendrites to connect across synapses and create more knowledge for the student. And she does this with simple approaches classroom teachers can initiate easily without losing the focus the testing mandates press upon them each day. It's worth the read just for the encouragement.

About the Author

Cathy Bodine, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, is an Associate Professor and Section Head in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Department of Pediatrics, an Affiliate Faculty Member in the Department of Bioengineering, and Executive Director of Assistive Technology Partners at the University of Colorado Denver.

Dr. Bodine began her career in assistive technology in 1985. She joined the faculty of the University of Colorado Denver, Anschutz Medical Campus in 1996. Today, she is internationally recognized for her leadership in the field of assistive technology and vigorously pursues her passions for new product design, research, service to families and persons with disabilities, and the professional assistive technology community at large through her leadership of Assistive Technology Partners.

Dr. Bodine has served as the principal investigator (PI) for a number of preservice professional preparation grants, as well as the Colorado Assistive Technology Act. In addition, she has served as the PI for several research and development projects leading to new designs in AT devices. She also led a U.S. Department of Education funded Field Initiated Development Project utilizing the International Classification of Functioning to measure assistive technology outcomes. She is the principal investigator for the Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center for Advancing Cognitive Technologies (RERC-ACT). Dr. Bodine serves on numerous national and international boards and is a frequent author and lecturer.

About the Author
Mara Sapon-Shevin is Professor of Inclusive Education in the Teaching and Leadership Department of the School of Education at Syracuse University. She teaches in the University’s Inclusive Elementary and Special Education Teacher Education Program that prepares teachers for inclusive, heterogeneous classrooms. She frequently consults with districts that are attempting to move towards more inclusive schools and respond more positively to student diversity, providing workshops and support for teachers, students, parents and administrators.

Mara presents frequently on inclusive education, cooperative learning, social justice education, differentiated instruction, friendship, community building, school reform, and teaching for diversity. She works with other educators and community members to design workshops and learning experiences to help participants build relationships across ethnic and racial groups and collaborate for friendship and peaceful co-existence. Mara can often be found leading conference groups in community building, singing and dancing.

The author of over 150 books, book chapters and articles, Mara is also the co-author of a seven session curriculum entitled, “Endracism/Endinjustice: Challenging Oppression, Building Allies” designed for high school and college students. She is the co-producer of a DVD entitled “and nobody said anything: Uncomfortable Conversations about Diversity” that explores critical teaching incidents on social justice for faculty in colleges and universities. Her most recent book is Widening the Circle: The Power of Inclusive Classrooms (Boston: Beacon Press, 2007).

Unbalanced

The positive for this read is that it does provide some good activities for students that involve a high level of cooperation and inclusion. However, insofar as education books go, most provide these resources as well. Negatively, it is an unbalanced and over the top rendition of emotional platitudes and strange, unfair examples. If you do not share her same assumptions and flair for the issues she addresses, the unbalanced nature of this book is very frustrating.

I had to buy this book for a Multiculturalism course. It is one of my favorite education books of all time! It gives beautifully written philosophical rationales for changes to your classroom and teaching styles PLUS many real word suggestions for games, activities and community building methods. I really can't say enough good things about this book!

About the Author
Richard C. Hunter is a professor of educational administration and former head of the Educational Organization and Leadership Department at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He holds an EdD in policy, planning, and administration from the University of California at Berkeley and was professor and chair of the Educational Leadership Program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He has worked as a teacher, a principal, and an assistant and associate superintendent in the public schools of Berkeley, California; U.S. Air Force Schools in Tokyo, Japan; Richmond, California; and Seattle, Washington. He also was the district superintendent of the public schools of Richmond, Virginia; Dayton, Ohio; and Baltimore, Maryland. He was an associate director for education for the U.S. Department of Defense Education Activity in Arlington, Virginia. He was given a Fulbright Scholar Program Award from the U.S. Department of State and is currently serving as a lecturer at the Bahrain Teachers College of the University of Bahrain.

Frank Brown is the Cary C. Boshamer Distinguished Professor of Educational Leadership and Dean Emeritus, School of Education, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Brown holds a PhD from the University of California at Berkeley and has held several academic and administrative positions: lecturer in education and acting director of mathematics and science education, University of California at Berkeley; associate director, New York State Commission on the Quality, Cost and Financing of Elementary and Secondary Education; assistant professor and director of University’s Urban Institute, City College of New York; professor of educational administration and PhD program in public policy and director of the Cora P. Maloney College, State University of New York at Buffalo; and visiting scholar, Graduate School of Education, University of California at Berkeley. He has authored more than 300 publications and is listed in and Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in Black America.

Saran Donahoo is an associate professor in the Department of Educational Administration and Higher Education and the director of the College Student Personnel Program at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. She earned both her PhD and her MA at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She completed her BA in secondary education at the University of Arizona. Her published works include coediting Teaching Leaders to Lead Teachers: Educational Administration in the Era of Constant Crisis and articles in Teachers College Record, Equity & Excellence in Education, Christian Higher Education, Urban Education, and Education and Urban Society, as well as an array of book chapters. She also serves as associate editor for Media Reviews for the Journal of Student Affairs Research & Practice. In 2009, she received both the Joyce Cain Award for Distinguished Research on African Descendants from the Comparative and International Education Society (CIES) and the American Educational Research Association (AERA) Division J Outstanding Publication Award.

James Price Dillard is Liberal Arts Research Professor in Communication Arts & Sciences at The Pennsylvania State University. His primary area of research considers the impact of message features and audience characteristics in persuasive health communication, message processing, and the process of persuasion/resistance to persuasion as well as quantitative research methods in communication. His research has been published in major communication and related journals.

Well Worth the Price

There are lots of textbooks out there on Persuasion. This is certainly one of the best. It is clearly written, well organized, and comprehensive. Rather than present models and theories without criticism, it presents the arguments for and against each without getting into the tall weeds. I also found that the summary and the end of each chapter to be extremely helpful. The choices for references also appeared to be well considered.

That being said, unless you have a firm grasp on sociological statistics, the chapter on Discrepancy Models of Belief Change (Chapter 6) is going to be a challenge. Also, the vocabulary for most of the book will require a background in reading research papers to get the most out of the book. For that reason, I recommend it for graduate studies in Communications and Rhetoric but might be a bit more cautious having it considered as an undergraduate resource.

Good for beginners

This book is for high-school level researchers. If you have never had a class on research methods, you might find this book an easy introduction. However, if you have had even one course in research methods, this book is useless to you.

For those who want to know the basics about research it is a great book. Easy to read without being condescending. Good information for students who are just getting into research methods. It is a nice addition to any research methods textbook.

About the Author

Dr. Gerard J. Puccio is Professor and Chair of the International Center for Studies in Creativity at Buffalo State, a unique academic department founded in 1967 that offers a Master of Science degree in creativity and a Graduate Certificate in Creativity and Change Leadership. Dr. Puccio has published more than 40 scholarly works and delivered more than 40 presentations at conferences and research meetings. As an internationally recognized creativity researcher, Dr. Puccio has presented his work in such countries as England, Italy, the Netherlands, Canada, France, Singapore, India and Hong Kong. Recently Dr. Puccio was one of the featured speakers in a panel discussion on creativity and intelligence at an international conference sponsored by the French Federation of Psychology to celebrate the one-hundredth anniversary of Binet’s work. In recognition of his scholarly efforts, Dr. Puccio received the State University of New York’s award for exemplary contributions to research.

In addition to his scholarly work, Dr. Puccio has delivered workshops and consulting services to numerous organizations including: Procter & Gamble, Kraft, Nabisco, 3M, IBM, Fisher-Price Toys, Rich Products, and many others. He has delivered creativity training programs and courses in a number of countries, including: Spain, Ireland, Brazil, England, and Tanzania.

Dr. Puccio received his doctoral degree in Organizational Psychology from the University of Manchester, England.

Marie Mance is Director of Leadership Development at Buffalo State College and an adjunct faculty member at the International Center for Studies in Creativity, teaching in the undergraduate and graduate programs. She holds an M.S. in Creativity and M.Ed. in Counseling/Student Personnel. She has traveled internationally to present creativity and creative problem solving courses and workshops in Nigeria, Singapore and South Africa. She has also designed and delivered workshops in creativity, strategic planning and other change initiatives for a number of organizations in the public and private sector. Currently she is developing and presenting leadership programs for faculty, staff and students at Buffalo State with creativity as a core component. Marie also coaches in the leadership program and has completed training at the Coaches Training Institute. She is pursuing certification to become a Certified Professional Co-Active Coach. She is President of the Niagara Frontier chapter of ASTD (American Society for Training and Development) and a Colleague of the Creative Education Foundation.

 Mary C. Murdock was an Associate Professor and graduate faculty member at the International Center for Studies in Creativity, Buffalo State College, Buffalo, NY, where she taught graduate courses and supervised master’s work. Through her career, Dr. Murdock was involved in international work, including work as a guest lecturer on qualitative research in the Cognitive Psychology Unit of the University of Bergen and in teaching Creative Problem Solving courses at international schools in five countries (Colombia, Dominican Republic, Tanzania, China, Malaysia).

Her publications included two texts: Creative Problem Solving and Role Playing, co-authored with E. Paul Torrance and Creativity Assessment: Readings and Resources with Gerard Puccio. She was also a co-editor along with Center colleagues, of Understanding and Recognizing Creativity: The Emergence of a Discipline and Nurturing and Developing Creativity: The Emergence of a Discipline.

Mary held a BA in English from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, an M.Ed. in Gifted Education and a doctorate in Educational Psychology from the University of Georgia.

Books Shows How Creativity Powers Change

The authors put up a strong case of the leadership-creativity connection. Using research by other scholars, the authors highlight problem solving as an important skill set of a leader. The book takes the reader through the creative problem solving process that Buffalo is renowned for and the techniques to facilitate divergent and convergent thinking.

The book is easy to read with practical examples to aid learning. The coverage is comprehensive including sections on creative styles and climate. There is theorectical basis which helps the reader to understand and build confidence.

This book guides me on how to get out of the rut and inspires me that things can be different. A great resource book.

Current Thinking About Thinking

As a student of creative process, I've made it a point to read nearly every book that comes out on the subject. Creative Leadership: Skills That Drive Change is a seminal book on the topic, a must read if you want to be aware of the latest thinking about creative thinking.

Gerard Puccio, Mary Mance, and the late Mary Murdock, have written a book that forwards the field, and adds new thinking to how people think. Importantly, this is not just a book about creative thinking, but a book about how that topic connects with the all important skills of leadership and change. This is a scholarly book, and yet, it is highly readable, with good examples and case studies. I've read this book several times because there is no better guide, no better text, for understanding how structured creative thinking can help solve complex challenges.

For those who care, this book modifies, extends, and adapts the 55 year old Osborn-Parnes model of creative problem solving. The new model improves on the old one by recognizing that it is not always necessary to walk through every step in a structured model. It adds a diagnostic step that is missing in the original Osborn-Parnes, and it includes in the idea development phase, the idea refinement step. These subtle shifts from the original process are helpful in adapting the process to real world challenges. Creative Problem Solving Handbook

Originally, I had no idea what the Creative Problem Solving process was, but after reading this book as required reading for my Creativity and Innovation class at the University of South Florida in St. Petersburg, I knew it had the power to change. The Creative Problem solving process set forth in this book is very straightforward, relatively easy, and gives you instructions on how to solve some of the biggest challenges out there.

Businesses run into problems all the time, and sometimes not knowing how to solve them can be a real challenge. This is where CPS comes into play, and it can thus help organizations grow using both divergent and convergent thinking. In a way, the Creative Problem Solving process mimics Design Thinking, and it forces you to reexamine the problem, while being open to some pretty wild ideas.

The book is definitely beneficial to those people who use it in conjunction with a project based learning approach. It's also very beneficial to have more than one person participate in the process, so as to get an influx of ideas and not being limited to your own imagination. Having people of diverse backgrounds can definitely help, and being deferring judgement of those ideas is also crucial to the process. I liken it to the kid who gets up in front of the classroom and has everyone laugh at him. Will he share his ideas? Probably not! By deferring judgment, the possibilities of a solution are more readily available, since you piece together a potential solution from bits and pieces of the other ideas.

Since being exposed to CPS, I can definitely say it's a game changer. It taught me to "get out of the building" and do some ethnographic research. Watch what people are doing, and examine the problem at hand. You'd be surprised by what you learn. Also, since the process does require a facilitator for brainstorming sessions, consider hiring a Creative Problem Solving consultant to help guide the process. By being knowledgeable you gain insight, but having someone guide the way creates a vision for the future, and I'm sure that's going to be full of winning strategies.
