About the Author

Anita Jones Thomas, PhD, is a counseling psychologist with specializations in multicultural counseling and family therapy, and is currently an Dean and Professor of the School of Psychological Sciences at the University of Indianapolis. She received a bachelor’s degree in human development and social policy from Northwestern University and a master’s degree in community counseling from Loyola University Chicago. Her doctorate in counseling psychology was received from Loyola University Chicago. Her research interests include critical consciousness, and racial identity, racial socialization, and parenting issues for African Americans. She has also conducted training seminars and workshops on multicultural issues for state and national professional organizations in counseling and psychology, hospitals, and corporations and has served as a consultant for human service organizations. Dr. Thomas has served and chaired the Committee on Children, Youth, and Families of the American Psychological Association, and the Task Force on Resilience and Strength and Black Children and Adolescents, and is on the board for the Society for Child and Family Policy and Practice.

Sara Schwarzbaum, EdD, LMFT, LCPC, is a retired Professor in the department of Counselor Education and a coordinator of the Master’s in Couple and Family Counseling Program at Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago. She is also the founder of Couples Counseling Associates in Chicago. She has a master’s degree in clinical psychology from Buenos Aires, Argentina and doctoral degree in counseling with an emphasis in family therapy from Northern Illinois University.  She has written articles that have appeared in the Psychotherapy Networker, Counseling Today and other publications. She is a consultant, trainer, and presenter at state and national conferences where she frequently conducts workshops on clinical issues with Latino clients, the multicultural competency of clinicians, psychotherapy with immigrants and families, and marriage counseling.

This book is so unique! You can really get a glampse of the struggles that people from other ethnicities go through. They're all real stories written from their own perpective. I recommend it not only to counselors, but to anybody who is interested in learning about different cultures.

A very enlightenening book

There is so much for us to learn and this book was able to help me and others in the class identify and see how one's identity is based not by their culture but as an individual. Lots of material to digest and experience some of the experiences that this book contains which were written by individuals of different cultures etc.

About the Author

Arnold Shore is currently Associate Vice Provost for Research at Boston College. He has headed two foundations -- the Russell Sage Foundation and the Exxon Education Foundation -- and has served on numerous non-profit boards, including President, New York Regional Association of Grantmakers; Advisory Committee, Foreign Policy Association; Member, National Commission on the Independent College (Council of Independent Colleges); and Member, Commission on International Education (American Council on Education). Arnold has taught at the University of Minnesota, Princeton University, Columbia University Teachers College, and Boston College; at Teachers College and Boston College he had the good fortune to teach dissertation proposal seminars. Arnold received his Ph.D. from Princeton University.

John M. Carfora is Associate Vice President for Research Advancement and Compliance at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. An economist and recognized authority on research administration and international research collaborations, John has lectured at a number of colleges and universities throughout Europe, Canada, Africa, and the United States. Dr. Carfora is Co-Chair of "I-Group" -- a National Academy of Sciences committee on international research collaborations -- as well as a member of the Board of Directors of the Immersive Education Initiative, and a former member of the Board of Directors of the Alumni and Friends of the London School of Economics (1982-1990), John was a Fulbright Scholar to Ireland in 2009, was awarded the Distinguished Service Award from the National Council of University Research Administrators (www.ncura.edu) in 2007, and was an IREX Fellow to the former Soviet Union in the 1980s. John received his Ed.D. from the Department of Organization and Leadership at Teachers College, Columbia University.

A Great Guide to Grants

This is an excellent book for Teachers, Researchers, Librarians and NGOs. It provides a sound roadmap for preparing and submitting a grant proposal. The authors have in-the-trenches experience that really shows in the way they give practical advice and explain insider information about the grants process. I think it is a must-read for those involved in education and community service. At first I thought it was a bit expensive, but with the skills you learn it's a real bargain.

About the Author
LEE ANN JUNG is associate professor of special education at the University of Kentucky. Dr. Jung is a graduate of Auburn University and has worked in the field of special education since 1994 as a teacher, administrator, consultant, and researcher. She is a national presenter on topics of family involvement, inclusion, IEP/IFSP development, and grading and reporting progress of exceptional learners. She has authored more than 30 journal articles and book chapters and has received in excess of $3 million in funding to support personnel preparation and research. She is an editorial board member for three special education journals, associate editor for Young Exceptional Children and has served as guest editor for Topics in Early Childhood Special Education. Dr. Jung was named "Outstanding Junior Faculty Researcher" at the University of Kentucky in 2002. She serves on the governor-appointed Interagency Coordinating Council that advises Kentucky's Cabinet for Health and Family Services on matters of providing special education services to young children.

Great teacher resource

Drs. Lee Ann Jung and Tom Guskey have written a very practical, yet well-grounded book on how to grade students with learning challenges. Their approach explains the thinking behind their suggestions, and it reminds us that both academic and "non-academic" factors are important in reporting progress to both parents and students. Drs. Jung and Guskey have contributed an important and usable framework that will assist teachers and administrators as we implement a more rigorous, standards-based curriculum for all our struggling students.

Great book!

I am a special education teacher in an elementary classroom. This book reflected both my concerns about grading my students accurately and explaining their achievements to students, parents, general education teachers and administration. I have recommended the report card strategies to my superiors for possible implementation in my classroom. Thank you Ms. Jung.

About the Author

Rick Houser is currently Professor and Department Head in Educational Studies in Psychology, Research Methodology, and Counseling at The University of Alabama. He has been Associate Dean in the College of Education at the University of Massachusetts, Boston. Also, he was a professor and department chair for several years at the University of Massachusetts, Boston. Rick Houser has taught graduate-level research courses for more than 25 years. He received his doctorate from the University of Pittsburgh in rehabilitation counseling with a minor in research methodology. He conducts research in ethical decision making, stress and coping, educational neuroscience, and neuroscience and counseling.

Steve Thoma is professor and Coordinator of the Educational Psychology Program at The University of Alabama. He received his doctorate from the University of Minnesota in 1986 with an emphasis in personality and social development and a focus on moral psychology. He conducts research on the measurement of moral judgment.

About the Author

Neil J. Salkind received his PhD from the University of Maryland in Human Development, and after teaching for 35 years at the University of Kansas, he remains as a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Psychology and Research in Education, where he continues to collaborate with colleagues and work with students. His early interests were in the area of children’s cognitive development, and after research in the areas of cognitive style and (what was then known as) hyperactivity, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of North Carolina’s Bush Center for Child and Family Policy. His work then changed direction and the focus was on child and family policy, specifically the impact of alternative forms of public support on various child and family outcomes. He has delivered more than 150 professional papers and presentations; written more than 100 trade and textbooks; and is the author of Statistics for People Who (Think They) Hate Statistics (Sage), Theories of Human Development (Sage), and Exploring Research (Prentice Hall). He has edited several encyclopedias, including the Encyclopedia of Human Development, the Encyclopedia of Measurement and Statistics, and the recently published Encyclopedia of Research Design. Pretty basic

This book is pretty basic and would be best for undergrads or masters students who have little or no background in statistics but need to know a little something about testing. Salkind's writing style is informal and inviting and thus reassuring for people who "Think they hate" the subject, but it thereby glosses over a lot of details. I teach doctoral level students but have taught this material to advanced undergraduates in the past. Spring 2008 I used it as an supplement to Allen & Yen and my own course notes. It turned out that the ones who I selected this book for (applied nontechnical types such as school psychologists) pretty much knew everything in this book already before starting the class, while the more technically savvy ones could infer it from the main text. For doctoral students, learning the psychometrics "for real" i.e., with equations and real data to work with, is essential. While they don't always like it, it's important if they are going to be building scales or using them in a critical way. (In my view, hiding all the details of a mathematical subject like test theory does the students no favors no matter what their level, but I understand the difference between student levels and demands of different programs.) There is a bit of classical test theory and classical item analysis and a lot of words about various item formats, ranging from constructed response, varieties of multiple choice, to interviews, some of which are quite sensible and others seem strange to me as a psychometrician, e.g., the author's preference for matching items, which must entail a substantial degree of local dependence and for which there is, to my knowledge, no straightforward model-based analysis. The presentation here is rather laundry-list and could benefit from being more systematic, but again, that might be too hard for the target audience. There is also some nice discussion about testing ethics and the like, much of which could be given to students by having them read the relevant APA/AERA standards documents, though of course at the cost of likely boredom on their part.

Tests & Measurement for People Who Hate Tests & Measurement

As an introductory text or as a text for review/update for practicing professionals, this book provides a complete understanding in a well-thought out format from basic to advanced issues about tests and measurement. It has been helpful to me both as a resource and as the required text for a graduate course in Tests & Measurement. The author's approach to practice questions at the end of each chapter, wherein he asks and gives the answers, seems to be a concept sharpening device, particularly liked by many students. Altogether, this is the only text I have seen that is readily and continuously readable for those who think that the subject is dry and boring. Must buy together with Yin's "Case Study Research"

This book is a real good complement to the classic "Case Study Research" from the same author. Some of the concepts of the other book were not aboslutely clear (although the book is very good), but I was really able to understand fully after reading this one. Don't buy one without the other!!! These two books have everything you really need to know about case studies. Good luck!!

A must for anyone using case studies

Everyone is telling stories through case studies but what do they mean. How can you tell a good case from a poor one? Yin does something that few people have done -- provide a strong academic explaination that is understandable to the business person. Too often strong academic concepts are explained in language that makes the less appealing and seem weak to business people.

Yin's examination of the different types of case studies and study methods helps people understand what they are reading when the read a case study.

This very accessible book is a must for researchers and those who want to understand what cases are and how to use them.
