About the Author

Jeffrey A. Kottler is one of the most prolific authors in the fields of counseling, psychotherapy, and education, having written more than 90 books about a wide range of subjects. He has authored a dozen texts for counselors and therapists that are used in universities around the world and a dozen books each for practicing therapists and educators. Some of his most highly regarded works include Creative Breakthroughs in Therapy, The Mummy at the Dining Room Table: Eminent Therapists Reveal Their Most Unusual Cases and What They Teach Us About Human Behavior, Bad Therapy, The Client Who Changed Me, Divine Madness, Change: What Leads to Personal Transformation, Stories We’ve Heard, Stories We’ve Told: Life-Changing Narratives in Therapy and Everyday Life, and Therapy Over 50. He has been an educator for 40 years, having worked as a teacher, counselor, and therapist in preschool, middle school, mental health center, crisis center, nongovernmental organization, university, community college, private practice, and disaster relief settings. He has served as a Fulbright scholar and senior lecturer in Peru and Iceland, as well as worked as a visiting professor in New Zealand, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Nepal. He is professor of counseling at California State University, Fullerton.

A must-have!

This text was assigned as a required textbook in one of my graduate social work courses, which I rented at first but have now ended up simply purchasing because it has just been so helpful in my direct practice of the social work field.
Clearly written and very engaging, it is like no other textbook I have ever used before. I know I will continue to use this throughout my social work career.
I definitely recommend every clinical psychology, counseling, and social work student to buy this book.

Lovely Read

I really enjoy reading this book. I have it for a class this semester and it has turned into one of my favorite textbooks. It's an easy read and presents in-depth theories in an accessible format. It's as if one of my friends wrote the book instead of some stuffy professor. I will keep this on a bookshelf for years after this class, which I can't say for many other textbooks!

I had to buy this book for an introductory course to psychotherapy. This is a great book for anyone who is interested in psychotherapy. It covers many topics, it is very well written and full of great examples that make it easy to stay engaged and understand the material.

About the Author
Wendy Griswold has a background in both social science and the humanities. She received her doctorate in sociology from Harvard University in 1980 and has a master’s degree in English from Duke University. She taught at the University of Chicago from 1981 to 1997, She is the Bergen Evans Professor in the Humanities and Professor of Sociology at Northwestern University. She has been associate editor and book review editor of the American Journal of Sociology and has been on the editorial boards of Contexts, Poetics, and Acta Sociologica. She is on the Advisory Board for the Centro per lo Studio della Moda e della Produzione Culturale, Università Cattolica del Sarcro Cuore, Milan. She has received research support from the National Science Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, support from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Science American Council of Learned Societies, the Center for Advanced Studies in the Behavioral Sciences, and the European University Institute in Florence. Her research on culture has been international in scope. Her most recent book is Regionalism and the Reading Class (2008); she is currently completing a book on the WPA Federal Writers’ Project and its impact on American culture. Bearing Witness: Readers, Writers, and the Novel in Nigeria (2000), won the “Best Book” award for the Sociology of Culture section of the American Sociological Association. Her first book was on the English theater (Renaissance Revivals: City Comedy and Revenge Tragedy in the London Theatre 1576–1980 [1986]). In addition, she co-edited a book on the sociology of literature (Literature and Social Practice [1989]) and has written on the sociology of religion, specifically on conflict within churches. Her current research explores cultural regionalism; she is also studying the relationship between the Internet and reading in Africa. She has written an influential paper on sociological methods for cultural analysis (“A Methodological Framework for the Sociology of Culture,” Sociological Methodology 17 [1987]:1–35); much of her methodological thinking is incorporated in the present book.

About the Author

Dr. Snook is currently an Associate Professor of Organizational Behavior and Tukman Faculty Fellow at the Harvard Business School.

He graduated with honors from West Point earning the Royal Society of Arts Award for the most outstanding overall cadet in his class. Following graduation, he was commissioned in the US Army Corps of Engineers where he served with distinction in various command and staff positions for over 22 years, earning the rank of Colonel before retiring in 2002. He has led soldiers in combat. Among his military decorations are the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and Master Parachutist badge. He has an MBA from the Harvard Business School, where he graduated with High Distinction as a Baker Scholar. Dr. Snook earned his Ph.D. from Harvard University in Organizational Behavior winning the Sage-Louis Pondy Best Dissertation Award from the Academy of Management for his study of the Friendly Fire Shootdown in Northern Iraq.

Until July of 2002, Colonel Snook served as an Academy Professor in the Behavioral Sciences and Leadership Department at the United States Military Academy. He also directed West Point’s Center for Leadership and Organizations Research as well as its joint Master’s Program in Leader Development. He is the primary author of West Point’s Cadet Leader Development System―the Academy’s philosophy on how to develop leaders of character for the Nation. Professor Snook’s book Friendly Fire was selected by the Academy of Management to receive the 2002 Terry Award as the most influential book on managerial thinking published during the past two years. He has also co-authored a book that explores the role of "common sense" in leadership titled, Practical Intelligence in Everyday Life, available from Cambridge University Press (2000). Professor Snook has shared his leadership insights in formal executive education programs at Harvard and with numerous corporate audiences around the world.

Professor Snook's research and consulting activities have been in the areas of leadership, leader development, change management, organizational systems and failure, and culture. He currently lives in Concord, Massachusetts with his wife Kathleen and their five children.

Dr. Nitin Nohria is the Richard P. Chapman Professor of Business Administration. His research centers on human motivation, leadership, and corporate transformation and sustainable performance.

Co-author of more than ten books, his most recent, Paths to Power: How Insiders and Outsiders Shaped American Business Leadership, chronicles how leaders from different backgrounds rose to power in American business. In another work called Building the Information Age Organization, Professor Nohria examines the role of information technology in transforming organizations. He is also the author of over 75 journal articles, book chapters, cases, working papers, and notes.

Professor Nohria has served as an advisor and consultant to several large and small companies in different parts of the world. He has been interviewed by ABC, CNN, and NPR, and cited in Business Week, Economist, Financial Times, Fortune, New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.

Professor Nohria teaches courses across Harvard Business School's MBA, Ph.D., and Executive Education programs. He also served as a visiting faculty member at the London Business School in 1996.

Prior to joining the Harvard Business School faculty in July 1988, Professor Nohria received his Ph.D. in Management from the Sloan School of Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a B. Tech. in Chemical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (which honored him as a Distinguished Alumnus in 2007).

Dr. Khurana is the Marvin Bower Professor of Leadership Development at the Harvard Business School. He teaches a doctoral seminar on Management and Markets and The Board of Directors and Corporate Governance in the MBA program.

Professor Khurana received his B.S. from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York and his A.M. (Sociology) and Ph.D. in Organization Behavior from Harvard University. Prior to attending graduate school, he worked as a founding member of Cambridge Technology Partners in Sales and Marketing.

Professor Khurana's research uses a sociological perspective to focus on the processes by which elites and leaders are selected and developed. He has written extensively about the CEO labor market with a particular interest on: the factors that lead to vacancies in the CEO position; the factors that affect the choice of successor; the role of market intermediaries such as executive search firms in CEO search; and the consequences of CEO succession and selection decisions for subsequent firm performance and strategic choices. He has published articles on Corp. Governance in the Harvard Business and Sloan Management Review. His book on the CEO labor market, Searching for a Corporate Savior: The Irrational Quest for Charismatic CEOs (Princeton University Press) was published in October, 2002. The book is an analysis of the labor market for CEOs. Khurana's current research grows out of the same interests in the social context of business leadership and the allocation of leadership positions that motivated his research on the CEO labor market.

His most recent book, From Higher Aims to Hired Hands: The Social Transformation of American Business Schools and the Unfulfilled Promise of Management as a Profession (2007: Princeton University Press), chronicles the evolution of management as a profession, with particular focus on the institutional development of the MBA. This research is rooted in the question of how certain occupations within business (not just executive management but also consulting, private equity, and investment banking) have come to require the MBA credential as a prerequisite for entry. The significance of this issue lies in its direct bearing on the question of how professional management has claimed and received legitimation for its role as the steward of a very substantial proportion of society’s material wealth and resources―a role that has itself been subject to changing interpretations over the decades since the phenomenon of professional management first appeared on the American scene.

From Higher Aims to Hired Hands received the American Sociological Association's Max Weber Book Award in 2008 for most outstanding contribution to scholarship in the past two years. In 2007, the book was also the Winner of the 2007 Best Professional/Scholarly Publishing Book in Business, Finance and Management, Association of American Publishers.

Khurana's work on the deficiencies of the CEO labor market and his research on business education is regularly featured by the general media such as: Business Week, Fortune, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Newsweek, The Washington Post, CNBC, The Economist, Globe and Mail, The New Yorker, Chief Executive and Corporate Board Member magazine. He has also published opinion-editorials in some of these outlets. He has consulted to corporations and executive search firms to help improve their CEO succession, governance, and executive development practices. He has been recognized by the London Times as one of 'The Thinkers 50', a list of the fifty most influential management thinkers in the world.

I've been teaching a graduate leadership class for three semesters, and still struggle to figure out how to give students a constructive growth experience. When I saw this book, and the range of topics covered, I was eager to read it. However, the price is exorbitant. On a lark, I went to the publisher site, where the book is on sale for $84, no shipping charge, cheaper by $30 than the cheapest price I could find at any online purveyor. I haven't read this yet, but I'm feeling good about the bargain!

This is a great book that is full of updated information. IT is very clear and easy to understand. I got for a great price too. I have learned a lot about the part that different Presidential Administrations had to play with regard to information sharing or lack of action before and after 9/11.

Decent Read

A class requirement, I found this book to be dated (I blame the school for not using an updated textbook). Also, it seems as though the editors heavily favor the use of titles to address people every time a name is mentioned and re-mentioned. Sometimes these titles drag on for a line or two of text. Organization is awkward too. Finally, the copy I received had a torn cover meaning that it was supposed to be disposed of, yet somehow I obtained a copy which made me feel uneasy so I had to use a makeshift book cover.

A top-level guide to school change and capacity building

Crowther (2011) From school improvement to sustained capacity.

Frank Crowther has been working in this area of school leadership for a long time, and this material has been exposed to critical audiences across Australia and internationally. Suffice to say that the bits that don't work have been eliminated and school leaders can be certain that what you see in this book is best practice.

I like the fact that Crowther has not forgotten all those people who have helped to develop the book and he has acknowledged their work and encouraged them to write chapters in the book. That is capacity building!

So, what makes this book different?
The book demonstrates the authors' understanding of detail of school-based change, as they put together this total package of building sustained capacity. And, the change model strategies are research based.

Excellent Resource and Handbook for Faculty Development

Written in accessible language with helpful resources and clear examples, Transformative Professional Learning: A System to Enhance Teacher and Student Motivation by Margery Ginsberg advances professional learning for teachers to a higher level. This is a book which takes educators beyond a workshop model of faculty development, leading teachers through a series of connected cycles of learning that are relevant to their practice, to their school, and that can deeply involve them in new learning and collaboration.

The book uses authentic examples of how teachers can prepare, conduct, and reflect upon what their own eyes and ears tell them, trusting them to come forward with ideas and teaching strategies that are motivating to students from many different backgrounds. One of the first ideas in the book is "shadowing students," where through the simple act of following a student through a school day teachers can find insights about what truly motivates students in their varying classes. Having tried this method myself, I was amazed by how shadowing stimulated my thinking.

There are also other cycles of learning that can build upon each other or stand alone. These include home visits, collaborative lesson design, and using and analyzing data with teachers, family members, students, and community members. Because the examples and materials demonstrate how educators are implementing these methods successfully, readers can have more confidence in the processes the author advocates.

For someone such as me, who believes all students are motivated and that respecting cultural diversity plays a central role in motivation, I appreciate that this book never steps away from that understanding. It is also a convincing text in the sense that what educators are asked to do, parallels the enhancement of their intrinsic motivation just as it would students. Teachers' perspectives and organizational culture are in the foreground, not the background of this approach to professional learning. They can learn about culturally responsive teaching from their viewpoint, not the one of a so called "expert."

Transformative learning is learning which significantly changes an adults' view of something that matters in their lives, in this case their students, students' families, and their school community. Each cycle of learning encourages seeing students more keenly and more authentically, offering realistic cues for ideas to engage them in learning. The methods in this book trust teachers to collaborate with each other and with every method, there is guidance for putting new ideas into practice.

Final comment: In plain words, as a professional staff developer, I am looking forward to using this book as a resource and guide throughout the coming year!

About the Author

George Ritzer is Distinguished University Professor at the University of Maryland, where he has also been a Distinguished Scholar-Teacher and won a Teaching Excellence Award. He was awarded the Distinguished Contributions to Teaching Award by the American Sociological Association, an honorary doctorate from LaTrobe University in Australia, and the Robin Williams Lectureship from the Eastern Sociological Society. His best-known work, The McDonaldization of Society (8th ed.), has been read by hundreds of thousands of students over two decades and translated into over a dozen languages. Ritzer is also the editor of McDonaldization: The Reader; and author of other works of critical sociology related to the McDonaldization thesis, including Enchanting a Disenchanted World, The Globalization of Nothing, Expressing America: A Critique of the Global Credit Card Society, as well as a series best-selling social theory textbooks and Globalization: A Basic Text. He is the Editor of the Encyclopedia of Social Theory (2 vols.), the Encyclopedia of Sociology (11 vols.; 2nd edition forthcoming), the Encyclopedia of Globalization (5 vols.), and is Founding Editor of the Journal of Consumer Culture. In 2016 he will publish the second edition of Essentials of Sociology with SAGE.

Thoughtful and perceptive

This book changed the way I view my own habits of consumption. I found his analysis of contemporary trends in consumption interesting and provocative. Also interesting was his conclusion that as people grow accustomed to the new means of consumption that they have to be continually impressed by something new. I thought his remarks on the architecture of the "cathedrals of consumption" were also very important. The most unsettling aspect of the book was Ritzer's comparison of modern styles of consumption with religious institutions, and even the conformity of religious institutions to this new means of consumption (i.e., the mega-churches of today). It was a good read, too, not too dense or pretentious. Very engaging.

Made my inner fear of rampant consumerism in our society something I could understand

This is an incredible read for anyone who is terrified of consumerism, but doesn't find the critique presented by zombie subcultures a satisfying alternative. Where zombie movies and posters are hypocritical (in that you're just consuming someone else's noise), inarticulate/vague, and present violence as the only alternative, this book is enlightening. It helps you to embrace your role as an active/informed consumer and better understand what it is that makes you consume.

Though this edition was released a few years ago, it still captures 'now' incredibly well. Here's an excerpt about Amazon, and even what I'm doing as I write these words:

"As an internet provider of books (and now many other things), Amazon.com (and other consumption sites on the Internet) presents an interest case of efficiency through putting the consumer to work. The most obvious point is that the customer does all the work involved in placing an order. Less obvious is the fact that customers are invited to submit thoughts on, and reviews of, books; these reviews are then posted on the Web site. Customers, therefore, not only do the work of ordering but also serve as unpaid book reviewers. Many other sites on the Internet invite comments from people (e.g., cruise lines), and those who write positive statements are serving as unpaid public relations people."

Hilarious. It further notes that the success of sites like Amazon has in many way further spurred the emphasis of "blockbuster" books at book stores like Borders that have to compete with the success of e-commerce. Thus, quantity (of sales) over quality (of the material) is being further and further emphasized in our culture.

Read it, embrace its truth, and remember to breathe.
